Election Commission interacts with BJP leaders as part of panel's outreach
NEW DELHI: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday interacted with senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders including party president JP Nadda as part of its outreach to understand the concerns of political parties and address them.
'The BJP leaders discussed a range of issues, including the timely deletion of names of absent, shifted, and dead electors from the electoral roll. It was conveyed to them that this exercise is carried out annually during the summary revision of electoral rolls,' said a person aware of the matter.
Apart from Nadda, the BJP general secretary Arun Singh, Union minister Bhupender Yadav, and member secretary Om Pathak attended the meeting.
The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) was the first of the national parties to meet the EC earlier this week.
At its meeting on May 6, the BSP led by Mayawati asked the commission to ensure that Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail, or VVPAT, slips be generated for all votes.
Thursday's meeting comes eight days after the April 30 deadline set by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar for all national and state political parties to interact with the election watchdog.
'In continuation of the ECI's emphasis on fostering greater and regular engagement with different stakeholders, the Commission has initiated interactions with National and State political parties. These interactions would provide a long-felt need of constructive discussions which enable… presidents to share their suggestions and concerns directly with the Commission. This initiative aligns with the Commission's broader vision of further strengthening the electoral process in accordance with the existing legal framework with all stakeholders,' the Commission had said after the meeting with the BSP.

CPI demands action against Adoni MLA for making ‘casteist remarks' against Dalit sarpanch
The Communist Party of India (CPI) has strongly condemned Adoni MLA P.V. Parthasarathi for allegedly making casteist and religious remarks against a Dalit sarpanch during a public meeting at Dhanapuram village of Adoni constituency in Kurnool district. CPI State secretary K. Ramakrishna issued a statement on Saturday, demanding immediate action against the legislator. According to Mr. Ramakrishna, the incident took place during a recent event at Dhanapuram, where the village sarpanch, a member of the Dalit community, was deliberately denied the opportunity to come onto the stage. The CPI leader described the act as 'outrageous and disgraceful,' accusing the MLA of insulting the sarpanch based on caste. 'Even while tendering an apology, the MLA mentioned the sarpanch's religion, which is absolutely unacceptable,' Mr. Ramakrishna stated, adding that such behaviour was unbecoming of an elected representative in a democratic and civil society. He said that public officials must act with a sense of responsibility and avoid any reference to caste or religion in their public conduct. 'We demand strict action against MLA Parthasarathi. The government must ensure such incidents are not repeated in future,' he said. It may be recalled that a video from Adoni in Andhra Pradesh's Kurnool district has gone viral, showing the BJP MLA allegedly humiliating a Dalit sarpanch during a public event on June 16. The MLA is seen denying the sarpanch access to the stage and questioning, 'Is he a Christian?' after learning about his caste.

Door-To-Door Electoral Roll Verification Likely Before Bihar Polls: Sources
The Election Commission of India is contemplating intensive door-to-door verification during revision of electoral rolls for upcoming Bihar assembly polls, sources in the Commission said. In past, persistent concerns have been raised often by various civil society organisations, political parties and agencies regarding the inclusion or deletion of names of the electors in the Electoral Rolls. Sanguine about its responsibility, the Election Commission has repeatedly emphasized that it is committed to ensuring that only genuine and eligible citizens are enrolled in the electoral rolls. Regular exercise of revision of the electoral rolls is undertaken annually throughout the country by the EC and also before the holding of elections/bye-polls. Constitutional and legal frameworks are also quite clear and robust in this regard. Provisions regarding eligibility to be registered as a voter and disqualifications for registration in an electoral roll are clearly laid down in Article 326 of the Constitution of India and Section 16 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950. Need for constant updation of electoral rolls arises due to various reasons. 1. A key reason is the migration/shifting of electors: The country continuously witnesses inter-state, intra-state, inter-district and intra-district migration due to marriage, job opportunities, education, family requirements etc. For instance, forms received by the commission in 2024 indicates that 46.26 lakh people shifted residence, 2.32 crore applied for corrections and 33.16 lakh requested for replacement. Thus, in a single year, nearly 3.15 crore changes were required to be made across the country. 2. Deletion of names of dead electors: Generally, number of deletions of dead voters is much lesser than the registered deaths, as families do not approach the ECI for deletion of names of their kin. 3. Addition of names of young electors attaining the age of 18 years. 4. Corrections in elector details such as names/photographs/address 5. Rationalisation of polling stations for various reasons, especially in view of the new limit set by the EC of 1,200 electors per polling station from the earlier 1500 and the Commission's commitment to ensure that no elector has to travel more than 2 km to cast their vote 6. Identification and subsequent deletion names of illegal immigrants. The entire process of updation of electoral rolls is conducted as per the law/rules/instructions of the EC and sufficient opportunity is provided to political parties to file claims, objections and appeals before the final electoral is published. ut in spite of following a detailed protocol, insinuations and allegations are often made against the EC for arbitrarily inflating the electoral roll, even though the exercise is conducted with complete transparency and under constant scrutiny of the political parties. Thus, in order to make the system completely robust and free of any kind of errors, the Commission is contemplating an intensive door-to-door verification during the upcoming electoral roll revision before Bihar assembly polls. Such intensive and rigorous revision of electoral rolls has been done in the past as well. The last such exercise was undertaken in 2004.

No one wants to stay in Shiv Sena (UBT): BJP
Mumbai, Jun 22 (UNI) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Mumbai President and state Cultural Minister Ashish Shelar claimed here on Sunday that the condition of the Shiv Sena (UBT) party is dangerous and dilapidated. Shelar said that Shiv Sena (UBT) has become dangerous due its "anti Hindutva" policies and added that the group has given up Hindutva ideas which were espoused by the late Balasaheb Thackeray. "No one is ready to stay in this dilapidated party," said Shelar who is also State Cultural Affairs Minister. Former corporator Ishwar Tayde of Shiv Sena (UBT) group and former corporator Akanksha Shetty joined BJP along with their supporters today. Shelar said that Tayde and Shetty have joined the BJP because they have faith in the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who are committed to the welfare and development of the poor.
