DA case: Mohali court defers Majithia's bail plea to August 13
The hearing on the bail plea took place on Tuesday, during which lawyers from both sides presented their arguments for about an hour. However, no verdict was announced and the court posted the matter for August 13.
The court was also expected to pronounce its decision on Majithia's plea seeking a change of barrack in jail. After hearing arguments on this petition as well, the court reserved its decision until August 21.
Majithia's counsel told reporters that this was the sixth time the court had deferred his client's bail plea. He alleged that the Punjab government was deliberately delaying the matter and had failed to substantiate its claims.
On June 25, Majithia was arrested by the Vigilance Bureau at his residence in Amritsar in connection with the disproportionate assets case. He is currently lodged in Nabha Jail.
The disproportionate assets case against Majithia stems from an ongoing investigation by a special investigation team (SIT) of the Punjab Police, which is also probing his alleged involvement in the 2021 drug case.
Majithia had earlier been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, based on a 2018 report submitted by the state's Anti-Drug Special Task Force (STF). He spent over five months in Patiala Jail before being granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana high court in August 2022.

'Separate group misusing SAD's name, will file criminal complaint,' says Akali Dal
A day after Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) faced a virtual split following the rebel faction announcing its new president, the party on Tuesday (August 12, 2025) said it would file a criminal complaint against those leaders who were trying to appropriate the name of the SAD that was a registered and recognised party as per the Election Commission notification of 1996. Accusing the rebel faction of deceiving Punjabis by making false claims, senior party leader Daljit Singh Cheema said, 'At present 100% of the delegates of the Shiromani Akali Dal are with the party and not even one member of the separate group, which was misusing the name of the SAD, was a member of the latter party.' Mr. Cheema said all delegates of the SAD had been elected after a due election following the end of the term of the previous working committee. 'All members of the SAD had taken membership of the party after submitting a membership fee of ₹10, which was applicable for five years. The separate group did not conduct any membership drive as per the constitution of the party, which stipulates that every member has to pay a fee of ₹10. Therefore, they have no right to call their party meeting a delegate session of the SAD and can be proceeded against for indulging in cheating and forgery,' he said here at a press conference. He also termed the move as illegal, unconstitutional and immoral and said the SAD was consulting legal experts in order to file a formal criminal complaint in this regard. The party breakaway faction on August 11 had declared former Akal Takht acting chief priest Giani Harpreet Singh as its president.

After Asim Munir, Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif threatens India over Indus Waters Treaty
In a fresh threat to India, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday said the "enemy" would not be allowed to snatch 'even one drop' of water belonging to Pakistan. Pakistan has repeatedly cautioned that any attempt to block the water flow would be considered an act of war. "I want to tell the enemy today that if you threaten to hold our water, then keep this in mind that you cannot snatch even one drop of Pakistan,' news agency PTI quoted Shehbaz Sharif as saying at a ceremony in Islamabad. The Pakistani prime minister also warned that if India attempted such an act, 'you will be again taught such a lesson that you will be left holding your ears.' There was no immediate comment from India on Shehbaz Sharif's threat. Sharif's statement comes a day after former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari made similar comments, terming the Indus Waters Treaty's suspension an attack on the Indus Valley Civilisation and said Pakistan would not back down if India forced it into war. Actor-turned-Bharatiya Janata Party leader Mithun Chakraborty on Tuesday reacted sharply to the Pakistan People's Party chairman's comment and warned that India will respond with a series of Brahmos missiles. His fiery retort was also accompanied by a bizarre one: a dam will be built, and 140 crore Indians will relieve themselves there before that reservoir will be opened to unleash a tsunami in the neighbouring nation. We have no shortage of resources to undo the Indian designs to stop the river," he added. Hitting back, the ministry of external affairs said on Monday that Munir's fresh nuclear threat against India reinforced the well-held doubts about the integrity of nuclear command and control in that country, where the military is "hand-in-glove" with terrorist groups and New Delhi will not give in to any nuclear blackmail. Nuclear sabre-rattling is Pakistan's 'stock-in-trade', the MEA said, adding that India will continue to take all steps necessary to safeguard its national security. In an apparent message to the US, the ministry said it is also regrettable that these remarks were made from the soil of a 'friendly third country'. India carried out Operation Sindoor on May 7, striking terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in response to the April 22 Pahalgam attack that claimed 26 civilian lives. Home guard found to be booked in 6 cases at police station where he served for 22 years
VARANASI A home guard posted at Mubarakpur police station in Azamgarh for over two decades has been found facing eight serious criminal cases, including charges under the NDPS Act, Pocso Act, rape and theft, police said on Tuesday. In 2003, the first case was registered against him under the NDPS Act for allegedly possessing a large quantity of diazepam tablets and 'intoxicated laddoos'. (Pic for representation) Nirankar Ram, a native of Azamgarh's Damodarpur village, was appointed to the home guards department in 2001 and allegedly embarked on a crime spree soon after. He was found to have been booked in six cases at the very police station where he had been serving for the past 22 years, an officer said. According to the police, six cases related to alleged smuggling of marijuana were registered against Nirankar Ram. In 2003, the first case was registered against him under the NDPS Act for allegedly possessing a large quantity of diazepam tablets and 'intoxicated laddoos'. Between 2003 and 2017, he was booked in eight cases, including theft and sexual assault. Since his suspension a month ago, Nirankar Ram is not engaged in any kind of duty, the police clarified, after a section of social media reported that he was on the job. 'There's a news from a social media platform in which it has been said that home guard Nirankar Ram, a resident of Damodarpur in Azamgarh, is posted at Mubarakpur police station and is doing duty there,' said SP (city) Madhuban Singh. 'Many cases are registered against him. Earlier, information was received about this home guard's activities, after which a detailed report was sent by the Mubarakpur police station to the home guard commandant. Based on that, the commandant suspended the home guard. For the last one month, Nirankar Ram is not on any kind of duty. Further action is being taken against him,' he added. Inputs from PTI
