The Open Field: What are your early Seahawks preseason takeaways?
You've read the stories, you've read our on-site accounts and seen our videos, and some of you have even made it out to either Renton or Lumen Field to see the Seahawks in action over the past few weeks. For today's discussion, we want to know what your top takeaways are from training camp and the first preseason game. This was our lead topic on the latest HawksZone Rundown podcast with myself, Bryce Coutts, and Ryan MacMillan.
While it's low-hanging fruit to focus on the offensive line, more specifically Christian Haynes seemingly unable to win a starting job on the offensive line/usurp Anthony Bradford as the starting right guard, my takeaways were more based on the offense as a whole. The heavy usage of under center formations by Klint Kubiak is almost the polar opposite of Ryan Grubb's offense, such that there is zero chance the Seahawks of 2025 have a scheme that comes close to resembling last year's. Robbie Ouzts' impressive start to camp and preseason has me buzzing about having a fullback involved in the offense again.
I am not guaranteeing the Seahawks offense will be better this year, but it's going to be different and it should look better. More play-action, more rollouts, more easy buttons to press for the quarterback, more zone blocking in the run game, and obviously Jalen Milroe will be incorporated into the offense to some degree. Damn near every NFL team looks amazing playing against itself and against backups in training camp, preseason, and scrimmages, but from what I saw at practice and against the Raiders, the Seahawks have quickly established their identity on the offensive side of the ball.
Another takeaway is the rise of Tory Horton, whom I believe will be the team's second-leading wide receiver within the next two seasons. There's still a lot more to figure out throughout preseason and how he does in the regular season, but I feel better about the WR situation knowing he's performed well up to this point. His preseason debut was all the more reason to be excited that the Seahawks found themselves their own fifth-round gem, much in the way the Los Angeles Rams did with Puka Nacua.
Lastly, Brandon Pili and Quinton Bohanna have me wondering if Johnathan Hankins even makes the roster as a nose tackle. Pili and Bohanna have been consistently showing promise throughout camp and it continued into the Raiders game.

Steelers first-round pick Derrick Harmon carted off with knee injury
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers first-round draft pick Derrick Harmon was carted to the locker room after the defensive end injured his knee Thursday night in the preseason finale against the Carolina Panthers. Harmon's knee twisted awkwardly as he was engaged with a Carolina blocker on a pass rush. He was in tears with a towel over his head as he rode on the back of a cart to the locker room. The Steelers had no immediate update on the injury except to say that Harmon would not return to the game. The former Michigan State and Oregon player was the 21st pick in April. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin elected to start a handful of starters on both sides of the ball against the Panthers, including Harmon. The rookie had been expected to start this season on a defensive line with Cameron Hayward and Keeanu Benton. Veteran Isaiahh Loudermilk is expected to see more playing time if Harmon is out a significant amount of time. The Panthers did not play their starters. ___ AP NFL:

Chiefs reveal why team kept 2024 shooting into Andy Reid's office quiet
The Chiefs made the conscious decision to keep a May 2024 incident where shots were fired at the team's practice facility, with one bullet going through a window in head coach Andy Reid's office. The incident had remained under wraps for roughly 15 months before the Kansas City Star broke the story on Wednesday and Chiefs president Mark Donovan told The Athletic on Thursday that the organization had gone through its processes and protocols following the incident. Donovan said the Chiefs decided that keeping the incident quiet after consulting investigation, communication, and safety experts was 'the right path to take.' Kansas City head coach Andy Reid speaks during a press conference after an NFL preseason football game against the Seattle Seahawks, Friday, Aug. 15, 2025, in Seattle. AP 'Then we went back and said, 'OK, here's where we are. Here's the situation. Here's what we've determined happened. What's the next step, both from a PR standpoint [and] from a communication standpoint?'' Donovan said. 'And we made our decisions and moved on.' The investigation into the incident is ongoing and no one has been arrested. Wednesday's report by The Star indicated that Reid now had bulletproof glass in his office, but Donovan did not confirm that to The Athletic. Donovan had also said that Reid hadn't changed his routine or moved his office since the incident last year. 'When this happened, we sat down and went through the same system, same process, and got to the point of saying, 'OK, here's where we are,'' Donovan said. 'And he was completely on board with our process and what we were doing and how we were doing it.' Quarterbacks Gardner Minshew, Patrick Mahomes, Bailey Zappe and Chris Oladokun walk to the practice field during Kansas City Chiefs Training Camp at Missouri Western State University on August 06, 2025 in St Joseph, Missouri. Getty Images Donovan did not address the mental impact the shooting had on Reid. The Chiefs are set to play a preseason game on Friday night against the Bears, which will mark the first time that Reid will address the media since the incident became public. Reid has spent the past 12 seasons as head coach of the Chiefs and has led the team to three Super Bowl titles in the past five years.

Steelers' 1st-round pick Derrick Harmon carted off field after knee injury in preseason game
Steelers first-round pick Derrick Harmon left the field on a cart Thursday after sustaining a knee injury during Pittsburgh's preseason game in Carolina. The injury occurred with just over 10 minutes remaining in the second quarter. On third-and-4 from the 5-yard line, the Steelers' rookie defensive tackle rushed the passer and was engaged with a Panthers offensive lineman. As Harmon fell to the turf, he appeared to twist his knee. The Steelers ruled him out for the rest of the game just a few minutes later. 'I don't have an update right now,' coach Mike Tomlin told KDKA's Missi Matthews on the local broadcast at halftime. 'He's being evaluated.' A pick in the end zone gives the ball back to Pittsburgh Watch on @NFLNetworkStream on @NFLPlus — NFL (@NFL) August 21, 2025 If Harmon is out for any length of time, it would be a significant loss. The Steelers needed help up front after they allowed nearly 300 rushing yards in a playoff loss to Baltimore. They've wasted no time plugging Harmon into the starting lineup, hoping that he can be part of the solution. The 6-4, 313-pound lineman out of Oregon also has the well-rounded game to contribute in passing situations, after leading interior defensive linemen with 55 pressures last season, per PFF. Advertisement 'We think he's had a really good camp,' Steelers assistant GM Andy Weidl said last week. 'His explosiveness, his length, his hands, he's always work in his hands, ability to escape blocks in both phases, the energy comes off the ball with, the explosiveness. All those things are attractive.' In their base defense, Cameron Heyward, Keeanu Benton and Harmon are a dependable trio. However, the quality of play drops off significantly for the Steelers after that first wave. It's unclear at this time how significant Harmon's injury may be or how long he may be sidelined.
