Kizik brings legal dispute with Skechers to Europe

HandsFree Labs (HFL), the parent company of Kizik, has extended its legal dispute with Skechers USA to Europe, where it has now filed a trademark infringement complaint with the Unified Patent Court in Munich, Germany. In the complaint, issued by Fast IP, LLC – the intellectual property (IP) holding company of HFL – and seen by WWD, a disputed amount of one million euros was cited. The number serves as a preliminary estimate used to get the lawsuit filed, the media outlet noted. HFL has named the German, Swiss, Belgian, Italian and French arms of Skechers operations in the suit, which bears resemblance to the complaint already underway in the US. As such, HFL is once again targeting Skechers' Hands Free Slip-Ins line, the products of which it claims infringe on a number of its utility and design patents Akin to its US filing, HFL has called for Skechers to be banned from selling its hands-free shoes in 18 European countries, and is seeking to recall products placed on the market since July 9. HFL is also requesting provisional damages amounting to 200,000 euros, as well as other monetary damages. HFL had initially launched its legal quarrel with Skechers in July. According to its filing with a court in Texas, the company believes Skechers had 'knowingly and willfully' infringed on its patents that protect 'ornamental innovations'. Gareth Hosford, HFL's CEO, said the company was 'forced to defend' its hands-free technology 'against a company that chose to imitate rather than innovate'. Skechers later publicly responded to the lawsuit, calling HFL's claims 'baseless' and stating that it intended to 'aggressively challenge both the validity of the patents and the infringement claims'. In its statement, the footwear giant said it had 'obtained more than 140 utility and design patents worldwide, including in the US'. It also expressed suspicion at the timing of the lawsuit, which came shortly after the announcement that the brand was to be taken over by 3G Capital in a 9.42 billion dollar merger. In regards to this latest complaint, a Skechers spokesperson told WWD that the company had 'no further comment'.

Sterling ticks higher against dollar as economy slows less than expected

LONDON, Aug 14 (Reuters) - The pound rose to a fresh three-week high against the dollar on Thursday even as the greenback advanced against other major currencies, after UK GDP figures for July showed the economy slowing less than expected in the second quarter. At 0937 GMT, the pound was 0.1% higher at $1.135875, sitting at a three-week high against the dollar . Meanwhile, the dollar rose against the euro and Swiss franc. Against the euro, sterling rose 0.22% to 86.01 pence . Official figures published on Thursday showed Britain's economy slowed less than expected between April and June after a strong start to the year, despite the shock of U.S. import tariffs and a weaker jobs market, offering help to finance minister Rachel Reeves in meeting her budget goals. Francesco Pesole, FX strategist at ING, said while the numbers were generally positive they matter more for gilts and for the government heading into the autumn budget. "The BoE hasn't really looked at GDP numbers closely because they're volatile and backward-looking, and they're really looking much more closely at inflation and jobs." UK labour data on Tuesday showed weakness in hiring but persistent wage growth, a headache for the Bank of England, which is faced with the tricky task of balancing a slowing economy and stubborn inflation. The next batch of inflation figures is due on August 20 after last month's CPI figures for June showing UK inflation rising to 3.6% - its highest since January 2024. "The fact that policymakers are pondering how to respond to the challenging combination of a rather weak real economy and persistent inflation has bolstered the pound," wrote Commerzbank analysts in a note. "...these doubts reinforce the view that the BoE is not leaning towards a dovish stance." Money markets expect the BoE to hold rates steady at 4.25% at its next meeting on September 18 .

Swiss gold industry warns against Swatch boss's US gold tax proposal

ZURICH, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Switzerland's gold industry on Thursday voiced scepticism about a proposal by the boss of watchmaker Swatch (UHR.S), opens new tab to introduce a levy on gold exports to the United States in retaliation for U.S. tariffs on Switzerland. U.S. President Donald Trump last week imposed tariffs of 39% on imported Swiss goods, causing shock and dismay in the Alpine republic, a major refining and transit hub for gold. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection afterwards said Washington might put tariffs on the most widely-traded gold bullion bars in the United States. However, Trump said on Monday that gold would not face tariffs. Swatch CEO Nick Hayek told Swiss newspaper Blick that Trump's announcement indicated that tariffs on gold would be painful for the U.S. president. "Now is the time to go on the offensive. Switzerland should order a 39% export tax on gold bars for the United States," Hayek told the paper. "That's where we have to get at him. That's his Achilles' heel." The Swiss Association of Manufacturers and Traders in Precious Metals (ASFCMP) said that while ideas to better balance bilateral trade were welcome, careful consideration needed to be given to Switzerland's longer-term interests. "An export tax on Swiss gold destined for the USA would not only harm Switzerland economically, but also damage the reputation of a country that has consistently promoted and defended free trade," ASFCMP President Christoph Wild said. The Swiss Economy Ministry declined to comment on the proposal, but said the support of business representatives was in general welcome and helped underscore the close economic ties between the U.S. and Switzerland. Trump justified his 39% tariff by pointing to Switzerland's sizeable trade surplus with the United States. Part of that is due to gold exports. Hayek said that even if a gold levy failed to move Trump, it would cut the U.S. trade deficit with Switzerland. "If Trump doesn't give in to our pressure, we'll at least improve the trade balance with the U.S. if the Americans no longer import gold bars via Switzerland," he told Blick. Switzerland is continuing to hold talks with U.S. officials aimed at lowering the U.S. tariffs.
