Teen dies after being injected with painkiller medicine; two held in Hyderabad
Hyderabad, Two persons who sold painkiller pills without prescription to three teenagers were arrested here as one of them died, police said on Monday.
The painkiller tablets were sold to the youngsters by two persons, including the owner of a medical shop, and the youth injected it after crushing the tablets and mixing them with saline water, a release from Rachakonda Police Commissionerate said.
After injecting the tablet, the trio, all friends, fell sick and were admitted to different hospitals in the city last week and a 17-year-old among them died while undergoing treatment on April 19, police said.
Acting on a complaint lodged by the father of the deceased, the Balapur police arrested the two accused after booking a case against them on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and under relevant sections of BNS.
The complainant stated that the two accused caused his son's death by indulging in selling the pills.
On the modus operandi, the police said the prime accused made friendships with youngsters in the locality and explained to them that if they inject the pain killerpills with mixing of saline water into the nerves, they get drowsiness.
He would initially provide the injections for free. After the youngsters got addicted, he would charge for them.
The accused purchased the painkiller tablets from the owner of the medical store.
Both the accused were aware that the usage of painkillers in heavy doses causes death and supplying it to minors is an offence, police said.
The police appealed to parents to observe their children's behavour closely, if found any abnormalities.
Police further said if the parents suspect that their children are taking any drug, then they should inform to the local police.
Medical shop owners were instructed not to sell any drug to the customers without any prescription. If any violation is found then legal action will be initiated, police added.

HYDERABAD: Chikkadpally police on Sunday registered a fresh case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against Purnachandar, who is also accused of abetting the suicide of television anchor Swetcha Votarkar. It is pertinent to note that the police has not confirmed that she died by suicide. The POCSO case pertains to allegations that Purnachandar misbehaved with Swetcha's minor daughter. The accused surrendered before Chikkadpally police late on Saturday night. He has since been remanded in connection with the suspicious death of Swetcha. Police sources stated that during questioning, Purnachandar named a top politician in his statement. However, the sources refused to divulge any further details regarding this politician. The advocate representing Purnachandar said that the police registered a case under Sections 69 and 108 of the BNS, along with the POCSO case, which was based on statements provided by the deceased's daughter. In the initial complaint, Swetcha's father, V Poshetti, informed police that his daughter had divorced Kranthi Kiran and had been living with her daughter. He alleged that Purnachandar had pursued Swetcha for three years, promising marriage, following which she agreed to a live-in relationship with him. Poshetti claimed that Purnachandar was solely responsible for his daughter's death. The Chikkadpally police filed a case and produced Purnachandar in court.

Assam: Two accused in CRPF camp grenade blast injured in police encounter
Two youths arrested for their alleged involvement in a grenade blast in Assam's Golaghat were injured in a police encounter on Monday. Both the injured individuals are currently undergoing treatment at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH), police said. Three Assam Police personnel—Siddhartha Borbora, Sushil Bhumij, and Mintu Hazarika—sustained injuries in the low-intensity grenade attack on the night of June 24, prompting an immediate search operation by the police. At around 8:20pm, two individuals riding a motorcycle allegedly lobbed a grenade at the camp, police said. According to people aware of the development, Bhavesh Kalita and Sanjeev Baruah were not directly involved in the attack but are believed to have planned the incident. Explosives and a pistol were recovered from them during the arrests. During interrogation, Bhavesh and Sanjeev reportedly informed the police that they had hidden two pistols near the CRPF camp and guided the officials to that location on Sunday night. 'After reaching the spot, they attacked police and pointed guns at the officials. Despite repeated warnings, they continued threatening the personnel and attempted to flee when our officers opened fire on them,' a senior police officer said. Bhavesh and Sanjeev sustained injuries in the lower parts of their bodies during the encounter and were first rushed to a local government hospital. They were later shifted to JMCH in Jorhat, police said. Police stated that Ankur, Bhavesh, Sanjeev, and three others have been booked under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and the Explosive Substances Act. A fresh case will also be registered against Bhavesh and Sanjeev for attacking on-duty officials.

Chandigarh: 3 more held in ₹2.5cr ‘digital arrest' case
In the high-profile digital arrest fraud case involving ₹ 2.5 crore, the Chandigarh cybercrime police have arrested three more accused, taking the total number of arrests to 11. The recent arrests were made from Uttar Pradesh following targeted operations. The case was registered on June 1 under sections 308, 319(2), 318(4), 338, 340(2), 61(2), and 336(3) of the BNS. (HT photo for representation) The case pertains to Sumit Kaur, a resident of Sector 10-A, who fell victim to psychologically manipulative fraud on May 3. She received a call from a person impersonating an official from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), claiming that her SIM card had been misused and an FIR was registered against her. The scam escalated with a series of WhatsApp video calls from individuals posing as senior law enforcement officers, including a fictitious CBI DIG Rajiv Ranjan and a fake Supreme Court judge, who presented fabricated arrest warrants and accused her of being involved in a Jet Airways money laundering case. Under severe psychological pressure and fearing legal consequences, the victim was coerced into transferring her entire life savings, approximately ₹ 2.5 crore, into multiple bank accounts operated by the scam network. The now arrested accused have been identified as Prashant Kumar, 20, resident of Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh; Abhijeet, 24, and Anurag alias Vikrant, 23. On June 22, Prashant was arrested from Bijnor, where he confessed that he had linked his phone number to an IndusInd Bank account that was created using another person's KYC documents. He admitted to handing over the account details to the fraudsters and received ₹ 54,000 as commission. During interrogation, Prashant revealed that Abhijeet and Anurag alias Vikrant were also part of the racket and that the group had met in three different locations of Nashik, Mumbai, and Bhopal, where they were offered 15% commission per account for enabling the fraud. Subsequent raids led to the arrest of Abhijeet and Anurag on June 27, and police recovered multiple mobile phones, active SIM cards, and photocopies of forged KYC documents from their possession. All three accused have confessed to their roles and are being remanded to police custody for further questioning. The case was registered on June 1 under sections 308, 319(2), 318(4), 338, 340(2), 61(2), and 336(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) registered at PS Cyber Crime.
