Communist Party of Vietnam treasures ties with Russian counterpart: Top leader

MOSCOW/HANOI (Vietnam News/ANN): The Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) always attaches importance to its traditional friendship with the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (KPRF), General Secretary of the CPV Central Committee To Lam told Chairman of the KPRF Central Committee Gennady Zyuganov at their meeting in Moscow on May 11.
Lam praised the KPRF's recent significant achievements, noting its continued role as one of the leading political parties in Russia that shape key policies guiding Russia through challenges and toward strong development.
He expressed his confidence that with its prestige and experience, the KPRF would further solidify its firm position in Russia's socio-political life and global communist and workers' movements.
The General Secretary highlighted the importance of the CPV-KPRF relationship in the Vietnam-Russia relations, considering it as a political foundation to further promote cooperation in all spheres, particularly as Vietnam prepares to enter a new era - the era of the nation's rise. The CPV-KPRF relationship also plays an important role in strengthening and developing the international communist and workers' movement.
Zyuganov, for his part, congratulated Vietnam on its impressive socio-economic achievements in recent years, believing that under the CPV leadership led by General Secretary Lam, Vietnam will continue to thrive and grow stronger in the time ahead.
He expressed his delight at the positive progress in the relationship between the KPRF and the CPV, notably the agreement on expanding and deepening relations signed in January 2024 in Moscow, which has further bolstered the traditional friendship and solid cooperation between the two Parties and the people of Russia and Vietnam.
Both sides agreed to actively realise the cooperation agreement, focusing on facilitating the exchange of delegations by high-ranking leaders between the two Parties and the sharing of information about each Party's activities, promoting ties between mass organisations, especially the Youth Unions to ensure that the younger generations inherit and carry forward the long-standing bilateral friendship.
They vowed to support the activities of the Russia–Vietnam Friendship Association, foster inter-parliamentary cooperation, and strengthen collaboration between ministries, agencies, and localities, while coordinating stances at multilateral political party forums.
On this occasion, Lam invited Zyuganov and KPRF leaders to pay an official visit to Vietnam. - Vietnam News/ANN

3 killed in Russian strikes on Ukraine's Kharkiv

(AP pic) KYIV : Overnight missile and bomb strikes by Russia on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv left three people dead and 22 hurt, while a Ukrainian drone attack in the Moscow region wounded two people, officials from both countries said separately today. Russian forces used high-precision long-range weapons and drones to hit designated military targets in Ukraine overnight, hitting all of them, according to Russia's defence ministry. Separately, Ukraine denied an accusation made by Kremlin aide Vladimir Medinsky that it had indefinitely postponed accepting the bodies of its killed soldiers and the exchange of prisoners of war. 'Today's statements by the Russian side do not correspond to reality or to previous agreements on either the exchange of prisoners or the repatriation of bodies,' Andriy Kovalenko, an official with the national security and defence council said on the Telegram app. In an agreement at a second round of peace talks in Istanbul on Monday, the two sides said they would swap more prisoners and return the bodies of 12,000 dead soldiers. The northeastern city of Kharkiv, one of Ukraine's largest, is just a few dozen kilometres from the Russian border and has been under frequent Russian shelling during more than three years of war triggered by Russia's full-scale invasion. 'Kharkiv is currently experiencing the most powerful attack since the start of the full-scale war,' mayor Ihor Terekhov said in a post on Telegram earlier today. Residential buildings, educational and infrastructure facilities were attacked, he said, and photos showed buildings burnt and reduced partially to rubble, as rescuers carried the wounded away for treatment. Kharkiv regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said there could still be people buried under the rubble after one civilian industrial facility was hit by 40 drones and several bombs. In the Moscow region, two people were injured after a drone attack by Ukraine overnight and yesterday, governor Andrei Vorobyov said on Telegram, with nine drones shot down. Russia's aviation watchdog said operations had resumed at the Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo and Zhukovsky airports in the Moscow region after being suspended temporarily for flight safety reasons. The defence ministry said that since midnight, air defence units had intercepted and destroyed 36 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory, including the Moscow region. Ukraine's air forces also shot down a Russian Su-35 fighter jet this morning, its military said without providing further details. Russian forces have not yet commented on the matter while Reuters could not independently verify the report. A Ukrainian drone attack deep inside Russian territory last weekend likely damaged around 10% of Russia's strategic bomber fleet and hit some of the aircraft as they were being prepared for strikes on Ukraine, a senior German military official said in a YouTube podcast set for broadcast later today.

(EPA Images pic) BISHKEK : Russian ally Kyrgyzstan today quietly dismantled Central Asia's tallest monument to Vladimir Lenin, the revolutionary founder of the Soviet Union. Ex-Soviet states across the region are seeking to strengthen their national identities, renaming cities that have Russian-sounding names and replacing statues to Soviet figures with local and national heroes. Russia, which has military bases in Kyrgyzstan, is striving to maintain its influence there in the face of competition from China and the west and amid its invasion of Ukraine. Officials in the city of Osh – where the 23m-high monument stood on the central square – warned against 'politicising' the decision to 'relocate' it. Osh is the second largest city in the landlocked mountainous country. The figure was quietly taken down overnight and is set to be 'relocated', Osh officials said. The decision 'should not be politicised', city hall said, pointing to several other instances in Russia 'where Lenin monuments have also been dismantled or relocated'. 'This is a common practice aimed at improving the architectural and aesthetic appearance of cities,' it said in a statement. Despite some attempts to de-Sovietise the region, memorials and statues to Soviet figures are common across the region, with monuments to Lenin prevalent in the vast majority of cities in Kyrgyzstan. Kyrgyzstan was annexed and incorporated into the Russian empire in the 19th century and then became part of the Soviet Union following the 1917 Bolshevik revolution. It gained independence with the collapse of the USSR in 1991.
