Rajasthan police told to remove Urdu, Persian words from official documents, replace them with Hindi
The Rajasthan government on Saturday directed the state police department to remove Urdu and Persian words in official documents and replace them with Hindi.
In a letter issued to the director general of police, Rajasthan minister Jawahar Singh Bedham told the department to prepare a formal proposal on replacing Urdu and Persian words currently used in documents, letters, reports, notice boards and other communication with Hindi terminology.
The proposal would then be reviewed and implemented at the appropriate administrative level, it added.
The directive by Bedham, the minister of state in the Rajasthan home department, said that in the present times, police personnel and the public at large were not familiar with Urdu and Persian words. It said that due to this, such words should be replaced with terms in Hindi, which it described as the 'national language'.
The Constitution does not list any language as the national language. However, Hindi is used as the official language in Rajasthan.
The directive said that Urdu and Persian words were introduced during the Mughal era, and administrators at that time had to learn the languages. However, it said that in the current era, Urdu and Persian words are often misunderstood or interpreted, leading to delays in justice.
The minister claimed that prioritising Hindi in administrative language would improve accessibility to legal documents, government orders and police records.
'Using Hindi words instead of Urdu/Persian will make it easier for citizens to understand government notices, directives and schemes, which help in establishing better communication between the police administration and the general public,' the letter added.
Last year too, the Bharatiya Janata Party government in the state had pushed for replacing Urdu words used in police terminology with Hindi. The police department had been directed to collect details about Urdu words in such documents and their possible replacement in Hindi.

New Delhi [India], June 15 (ANI): Nearly two weeks after the Haryana Public Service Commission (HPSC) cancelled the written examination for Assistant Professor (Hindi) posts amid allegations of a paper leak, Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala on Sunday alleged fresh irregularities in the recruitment process. He claimed these stem from the earlier 'hush-up' of the HPSC cash-for-job scam. Speaking at a press conference, Surjewala said, 'Investigative agencies found fraud in five recruitment processes under HPSC. The HPSC secretary even told the court that Rs 1.08 crore was recovered from the HPSC office, which was also reported in the media.' He alleged that despite the evidence, no concrete action was taken. 'Neither Alok Verma, the Chairman of HPSC, nor any other officials were questioned. The matter was hushed up. As a result, the recruitment of Assistant Professors has run into problems again. No Assistant Professors have been appointed in Haryana's college cadre since 2019, which means students have been studying without teachers for the last seven years,' he said. Surjewala further claimed that in 2024, over 2,000 posts for Assistant Professors were advertised. 'In August 2024, 2,424 posts for Assistant Professors across 26 subjects were advertised. Around 1.5 lakh candidates applied. But as preparations for the 2025 exams began in May and June, problems have emerged again,' he added. The HPSC cancelled the written exam for Assistant Professor (Hindi) held on June 1, 2025, following allegations of a paper leak. Earlier, in August 2024, the Election Commission had halted the announcement of recruitment results in Haryana until the completion of the Assembly elections. The commission acted on a complaint by senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, who alleged violations of the Model Code of Conduct in the recruitment of 5,600 constable posts in the Haryana Police, 76 TGT and PTI posts by the Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC), and various posts by HPSC. He alleged that the RJD chief had placed Ambedkar's picture near his feet during his birthday celebration, noting that it was 'not acceptable' to insult Baba Saheb in the guise of his birthday celebration. 'On one side, Lalu Yadav talks about social justice, and on the other, they insult Babasaheb. Celebrate your birthday, but what message do you want to convey by keeping Babasaheb's picture near your feet? It is not acceptable to insult Babasaheb under the guise of celebrating his birthday,' Hussain said. 'RJD does not respect anyone other than Lalu Yadav. They are just insulting Babasaheb, and it has become a habit of his; he has become addicted (to insulting Ambedkar). The people of Bihar will answer to this,' he further charged. Meanwhile, on Saturday, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav hit out at the BJP, accusing its leaders of having no connection with BR Ambedkar, the Constitution, or reservation policies, while defending his father Lalu Prasad Yadav. DM for collective effort to boost voter turnout to 66%
Patna: Patna DM Thiyagarajan SM on Sunday asked the officials concerned to ensure successful implementation of the 'Mission 60' campaign during the upcoming assembly elections. The initiative, launched under the guidance of the Election Commission of India, is aimed at raising voter turnout in the 60 polling stations with the lowest participation in each assembly constituency to 66%. The DM ordered special efforts in areas with consistently low voter turnout ratio (VTR), especially in Digha, Kumhrar and Bankipur constituencies. He appealed to a wide range of stakeholders, including Jeevika Didis, ICDS workers, PDS vendors, academics, students, sportspersons, media professionals and others to play an active and constructive role in the campaign. "The goal is to bring Patna district's VTR closer to the national average of approximately 66%. Traditionally, Digha, Bankipur, and Kumhrar constituencies have recorded lower voter turnout percentages, around 35%," he said. Patna district comprises 14 assembly constituencies with 4,906 polling stations and 2,944 polling station locations. He asked the officials to launch targeted awareness drives in low-turnout polling stations, focusing on youth, women, persons with disabilities, urban voters and vulnerable communities. BLOs have been tasked with conducting door-to-door visits and direct engagement under the 'Knock-the-Door' campaign to motivate voters. "Aware voters are the backbone of our prosperous democracy. The adult franchise granted by the Constitution is invaluable, and exercising this right is essential for a citizen. A high voter turnout in elections will give a new dimension to our democracy," the DM said. He also announced that the special summary revision (SSR) of the electoral roll will commence soon. During the SSR, all electoral registration officers must review voter details at the booth level and ensure no eligible voter is left out. According to official data, voter turnout in Patna Sahib and Pataliputra parliamentary constituencies increased in the 2024 general elections compared to 2019.
