Trump Wants To Celebrate 250 Years Of Independence With A UFC Fight At The White House

Al Arabiya17 hours ago
President Donald Trump said Thursday that he's thinking of staging a UFC match on the White House grounds with upward of 20,000 spectators to celebrate 250 years of American independence.
'We have a lot of land there,' said Trump, a UFC enthusiast who has attended several of its mixed martial arts matches in recent months and is close friends with Dana White, the league's president. Trump announced his plan in Iowa during the kickoff for a year's worth of festivities to celebrate America's 250th birthday on July 4, 2026. The Republican president also announced a culminating festival on the National Mall in Washington and a separate athletic competition featuring high school athletes from across the country.
'So every one of our national parks, battlefields and historic sites are going to have special events in honor of America 250. And I even think we're going to have a UFC fight,' Trump said. 'Think of this: on the grounds of the White House. We have a lot of land there,' he said, adding that it would be a full fight with 20,000 to 25,000 people.
A White House spokesperson said they had no details to share beyond the president's announcement.
Trump has recently enjoyed standing ovations and cage-side seats for several UFC fights, including an appearance immediately after his 2024 reelection and another just last month alongside White for two championship fights.

Mets' Buttó Goes on 15-Day Injured List With Unspecified Illness. Senga To Make Rehab Start Saturday

New York Mets reliever José Buttó was put on the 15-day injured list Friday with an unspecified illness. 'We're not going to get into the details of it out of respect for Buttó, but we don't anticipate this being a long-term issue,' Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. 'We expect him to be back right after the All-Star break.' Mendoza said he didn't anticipate that Buttó will need to go on a minor league injury rehabilitation assignment. A 27-year-old right-hander, Buttó is 2–1 with a 2.47 ERA in 31 relief appearances, the last a two-inning outing at Pittsburgh last Saturday. New York recalled right-hander Chris Devenski from Triple-A Syracuse. Brought up for the fourth time this season, the 34-year-old right-hander has made four appearances for the Mets. Right-hander Kodai Senga, sidelined since June 12 by a strained right hamstring, is to start a rehab assignment Saturday with Double-A Binghamton. He is to throw 60–65 pitches, according to Mendoza, and soon could return to New York's injury-ravaged rotation. 'We'll see how it goes tomorrow and then see how he responds, and we'll have a decision after that,' Mendoza said. New York didn't have an update on reliever Dedniel Núñez, who was put on the IL on Thursday because of a sprained right elbow and could require Tommy John surgery for the second time. 'He's going to visit a doctor next week because of a holiday weekend,' Mendoza said.

Trevor Story homers as part of 4-hit day to help Red Sox beat Nationals 11-2

Trevor Story homered and drove in four runs as part of a four-hit day. Lucas Giolito pitched 7 2/3 innings of one-run ball in his first game against the team that drafted him, and the Boston Red Sox routed the Washington Nationals 11–2 on Friday. Jarren Duran had three RBIs for Boston, which collected 16 hits and has won four of six since enduring a season-worst six-game skid. Washington was denied its first three-game winning streak since taking four in a row on May 28–31. Giolito (5–1) allowed four hits and three walks while striking out seven, surrendering Luis García Jr.'s sacrifice fly in the sixth. He is 2–0 with a 0.61 ERA in his last two starts. The right-hander was the Nationals' first-round pick in 2012 and debuted with the team four years later. Washington traded him to the Chicago White Sox in December 2016. The Red Sox broke the game open with a seven-run fifth inning. After Boston loaded the bases, Wilyer Abreu walked in a run to make it 3–0, and Story ripped a two-run single to center to chase Washington starter Michael Soroka (3–6). Marcelo Mayer hit reliever Zach Brzycky's first pitch to left to score Abreu. Three batters later, Duran hit a two-run double. He later scored on Abraham Toro's single. Story hit his 13th home run of the season in the eighth, a two-run blast to left off Ryan Loutos. Soroka allowed seven runs and struck out six in four innings, matching his shortest outing of the season. Key moment: Story's two-run single in the fifth extended Boston's lead to 5–0 and ended Soroka's day.

Cubs starter Jameson Taillon goes on injured list, will miss more than a month with calf strain

Chicago Cubs starter Jameson Taillon may miss more than a month with a right calf strain, manager Craig Counsell said Friday after the team placed the veteran right-hander on the injured list. Taillon is 7–6 with a 4.44 ERA and a mainstay in the NL Central leaders' rotation despite some ups and downs in his ninth major league season. The 33-year-old has lost three straight games with a 10.66 ERA in that span after winning five in a row. Taillon, who had been scheduled to start Saturday, sustained the injury while running after a bullpen session on Thursday. 'He felt a grab yesterday,' Counsell said. 'He's going to miss a pretty significant amount of time.' The IL move is retroactive to Tuesday. In a corresponding move, the Cubs recalled lefty Jordan Wicks from Triple-A Iowa before their game against the St. Louis Cardinals. Wicks is expected to work from the bullpen, although 11 of his 12 appearances for Iowa were starts. He was 1–3 with one save and a 4.06 ERA with the Triple-A affiliate. Wicks appeared in two games with the Cubs in April, pitching two innings and going 0–1 with a 13.50 ERA. 'He's got to come up here and attack the strike zone and get himself in favorable counts … to be effective,' Counsell said. Taillon's injury left the Cubs scrambling to plug another hole in their rotation. Left-hander Justin Steele, an All-Star in 2023 with a 16–5 record, made only four starts this season before undergoing elbow surgery that will sideline him for the rest of 2025. Lefty Shota Imanaga has won two starts since returning from a hamstring strain that kept him out for seven weeks.
