There's a potential Air Canada strike looming. Here's what you need to know

A potential strike looms as contract talks carry on between Air Canada and the union representing 10,000 of its flight attendants. The outcome of negotiations this week could be critical for summer travellers worried about their upcoming flights. Here's what you need to know ahead of taking off. Will there be a strike? It's too early to say. The Air Canada component of the Canadian Union of Public Employees received a strong strike mandate from its membership after a vote that closed last week, with 99.7 per cent in favour. But, that doesn't mean a strike will happen. The airline downplayed the mandate, calling it a "normal step in the negotiation process" — essentially a tool that gives the union more leverage in contract talks. The union has also said it's optimistic it can avoid a disruption. The two sides returned to the bargaining table on Friday in the hopes of solving the impasse. When would a strike take place? The earliest that flight attendants could potentially walk off the job is Saturday at 12:01 a.m. ET. That deadline comes after a mandatory 21-day "cooling off" period officially expires. The strike mandate is effective for 60 days. When will we know if there is a strike? The union must provide 72-hours notice if it intends to strike. That means it could give notice of a work stoppage by Wednesday at 12:01 a.m. ET if they intend to go on strike on Saturday. Air Canada says it will keep passengers updated on potential disruptions via email and text message. Would all flights be cancelled? Air Canada has said it is "premature to speculate or discuss possible contingencies" in case of a strike. If a strike does occur, it would affect Air Canada's main operations and Air Canada Rouge. Flight attendants working for Jazz and PAL, which operate Air Canada Express flights, are not part of the negotiations. WATCH | Summer travellers worry about how a strike might impact their plans: Potential Air Canada flight attendant strike has some rethinking travel plans 3 days ago Summer travellers are anxiously watching as Air Canada and the union representing thousands of flight attendants return to the bargaining table. Flight attendants could walk off the job as early as Aug. 16 if a new agreement isn't reached. How will I find out either way? Air Canada has said to stay tuned for updates this week. While flights are operating as scheduled so far, it says online that should this change, it will notify customers via email and text message in advance of their travel. For passengers whose itineraries change mid-journey, Air Canada says it will "actively explore all options to keep you travelling, including rebooking with other airlines on your behalf." "If you haven't received an email or text message notification, it's because your itinerary is not impacted," it says. "If you booked your own travel and you want to make sure you didn't miss a notification, take the time to check your junk email folder and your mobile provider's message settings."

Windsor getting $271K to help alleviate flooding

The Ontario government is investing $271,000 to support the implementation of the Sewer and Coastal Flood Protection Master Plan (SMP) in Windsor. This investment supports an immediate priority project identified in the SMP: sealing sanitary maintenance hole covers (MH Sealing) through the installation of rain catchers. The city is contributing approximately $96,000 toward this project. 'Windsor was hard hit by severe flooding events in 2016 and 2017, and we've put in the work to understand the causes, evaluate the short-term and long-term solutions, and get to work to make a difference,' said Ward 6 councillor Jo-Anne Gignac. 'Certainly, we cannot do this alone, and we are grateful for this investment from the province that supports work in areas of the city that are most vulnerable to the impacts of stormwater.' Funding for this project is part of Ontario's $7.3 million initiative to support local organizations across the province with projects that help strengthen the health and resilience of the Great Lakes and their connecting waterways. 'Flooding has been a real concern for families and homeowners in Windsor,' said Andrew Dowie, Member of Provincial Parliament for Windsor–Tecumseh. 'This funding will help the City take practical steps to reduce the risk of basement flooding and protect our neighbourhoods.' Rain catchers are designed to reduce the amount of rainwater entering maintenance holes, helping to lower the risk of basement flooding, particularly as the region experiences more frequent and severe weather events. This work is part of the City of Windsor's broader Sewer Master Plan (SMP), a 50+ year roadmap recommending about $5 billion in improvements. So far, the city has committed $419 million, with nearly $100 million already invested. 'The City of Windsor is committed to ending basement flooding, and we are working deliberately and strategically to realize that goal through key projects and initiatives identified in the Sewer and Coastal Flood Protection Master Plan,' said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens. As part of the MH Sealing project, around 1,000 rain catchers will be installed in low-lying, high-risk areas. These devices aim to prevent stormwater from entering the sanitary sewer system, reducing the likelihood of flooding, sewer overflows, and treatment plant bypasses. Installations will be tracked using GIS-based mapping for real-time monitoring and future infrastructure planning. The project supports climate resilience, system efficiency, and better flood protection for the community. Local Great Lakes initiatives are funded by two provincial programs, the Great Lakes Program and the Great Lakes Local Action Fund.
