The partnership between Shannon Sharpe and ESPN has officially come to an end. The Pro Football Hall of Famer and prominent sports analyst has been let go by the network, as reported by The Athletic's Andrew Marchand. This development comes just days after Sharpe settled a $50 million lawsuit involving allegations of rape.
Sharpe, 57, joined ESPN's flagship debate show, First Take , in the fall of 2023 after departing FS1's Undisputed earlier that year. His addition to First Take was seen as a major move for ESPN, pairing him with Stephen A. Smith in what became a highly-watched and often fiery sports debate program.
However, Sharpe's tenure at ESPN was marred by controversy. In April 2025, he stepped away from the network following the emergence of the allegations. At the time, ESPN released a statement supporting Sharpe's decision to take a leave of absence, calling the situation 'serious.'
The lawsuit, which accused Sharpe of rape, was settled earlier this month for $50 million. While the details of the settlement remain confidential, the case has undoubtedly cast a shadow over Sharpe's career and public image.
Sharpe's departure marks the end of a tumultuous chapter for both the analyst and ESPN. Known for his sharp wit, deep sports knowledge, and charismatic on-air presence, Sharpe had become a fan favorite in the sports media world. However, the allegations and subsequent legal battle have significantly impacted his professional trajectory.
As of now, neither Sharpe nor ESPN has issued a detailed statement regarding the separation. This is a developing story, and updates are expected as more information becomes available.

Mikal Bridges, Knicks reportedly agree to four-year, $150 million extension

Mikal Bridges' first season reunited with his Villanova crew in New York didn't live up to the steep five first-round picks price paid for him, although Bridges started to find his footing and had some critical defensive moments in the playoffs. That, along with his potential fit in new coach Mike Brown's system, had the Knicks and Bridges agreeing to a four-year, $150 million contract extension, something first reported by ESPN's Shams Charania and since confirmed by multiple other reports. That is slightly less than the $156 million max he could have gotten this summer, Charania notes. While it may not seem like much, the giveback should give the Knicks more financial flexibility and help them avoid the dreaded second luxury tax apron in future seasons. Bridges also could have waited a year, become a free agent and gotten a larger five-year contract but took this deal instead. This deal locks up the Knicks' core — Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, Josh Hart, and Bridges — for two more seasons, which becomes three years if KAT and Hart pick up their player options. Bridges' $37.5 million average salary on this contract is the fourth highest on the team (behind Towns, Anunoby and Brunson). That the Knicks were willing to pay Bridges that much now suggests they think Giannis Antetokounmpo is not going to be available this coming season. Bridges had an up-and-down first season in New York, averaging 17.6 points a game and shooting 35.4% from 3, his lowest percentage since his rookie season. However, he seemed more comfortable in Tom Thibodeau's system as the season went on and had some critical defensive plays in the playoffs, helping the Knicks reach the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in 25 years. Bridges is considered one of the players most likely to benefit from the up-tempo, more ball movement system new coach Mike Brown is expected to bring to Madison Square Garden next season.

Terry McLaurin requests trade amid contract hold-in with Commanders: Sources

With contract negotiations at an impasse, Washington Commanders star wide receiver Terry McLaurin requested to be traded, team and league sources told The Athletic. McLaurin, 29, has been seeking a new deal with the team for months, believing the value of his current contract doesn't match his value to the team. He signed a three-year deal in 2022 worth an average of $22.79 million annually, which ranks 18th among current receivers. This year is the last on his contract and comes with a $15.5 million base salary. Advertisement Negotiations on a third contract with the Commanders have become increasingly tenuous, prompting McLaurin to skip minicamp in June and the start of training camp earlier this month, leading to possible fines and lost bonuses totaling more than $800,000. Days before Commanders veterans were required to report to camp, McLaurin spoke with reporters for more than 30 minutes following a commercial shoot in Maryland about the lack of progress toward a new deal, saying he was 'pretty frustrated' and 'disappointed.' McLaurin ended his training camp holdout on Sunday and reported to the team, but he was placed on the physically unable to perform list with an ankle injury, essentially turning his holdout into a 'hold-in.' He's been at the facility working out alongside teammates, but has not participated in any on-field work. After practices, he's walked down to the fields to sign autographs with fans. McLaurin — a face of Washington's NFL franchise through losing seasons, NFL- and federal-led investigations into the team and its previous owner, two name changes and a turnstile of quarterbacks — has led the team in receiving yards since 2019, when Washington selected him in the third round out of Ohio State. This story will be updated.
