Commercial banks and small finance banks (SFBs) are both regulated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), but they differ significantly in terms of their operational models and target customer base.
Commercial banks are large financial institutions that cater to the general population and offer a wide range of services, including all types of loan products. In contrast, small finance banks primarily focus on providing basic loan facilities such as personal loans, gold loans, MSME loans, and vehicle loans. Their primary target customers include small borrowers, micro-entrepreneurs, and the informal sector, particularly in underserved regions.

Both types of banks offer remittance services and provide access to digital banking platforms. However, the capital requirement for setting up a commercial bank is significantly higher compared to a small finance bank, which requires a minimum capital of Rs 100 crore.
Banking analysts advise investors to exercise prudence whilst considering investments in small finance banks, noting their elevated risk profiles compared to traditional commercial banks. While the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) provides insurance coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh for all deposits, these institutions operate with distinct business frameworks unlike scheduled commercial banks, which could subject depositors to increased risk exposure, as reported by ET.

Banks earnings will be reduced in Q1FY26 due to weak loan growth, lower margins and soft fee: Report

New Delhi [India], July 1 (ANI): Banks are expected to report muted earnings for the first quarter of FY26 because of weak loan growth, lower margins, seasonally soft fee income, and higher slippages weigh on performance, according to a report by IIFL Capital. The report estimates that banks' profit after tax (PAT) will decline by 2 per cent year-on-year and 4 per cent quarter-on-quarter. It said, 'We expect muted loan growth, NIM contraction, seasonally weak fee income and higher slippages to weigh on banks' 1Q PAT (-2 per cent yoy/-4 per cent qoq).' Business momentum remained sluggish during the quarter, with system-wide loan and deposit growth staying somewhat flat on a sequential basis. The report noted that system loan growth slowed to 9.6 per cent year-on-year, down from 11 per cent in the previous quarter. On a quarter-to-date basis, loan growth was just 0.4 per cent until June 13, compared to the usual 1.5-2.0 per cent growth seen in the first quarter of the past few years. Loan growth continued to moderate across segments, except MSME loans which grew at mid-teen levels. Other segments remained weak, with NBFC lending flat year-on-year, large corporates up just 1 per cent, vehicle loans rising 6 per cent, and housing and unsecured loans growing 9 per cent. The report expects net interest margins (NIMs) to contract by 8-25 basis points quarter-on-quarter in Q1. The decline in margins is driven by fall in loan yields of 10-20 basis points, which is more to offsets the decline in deposit rates. Savings account rates have been reduced by 20-350 basis points since December 2024, while retail term deposit rates have fallen by 20-100 basis points. Wholesale deposit rates also cooled off by 1 percentage point in the quarter. The report pointed out that average system liquidity turned into a surplus of Rs 2 trillion in Q1, compared to a deficit of Rs 1.7 trillion in the previous quarter. However, lower loan demand and the reduction in deposit rates have resulted in a fall in average outstanding spreads, by 9 basis points for PSU banks and 26 basis points for private banks till May. Seasonally weak fee income and sticky operating expenses are expected to lead to negative jaws for most banks, resulting in flat core pre-provision operating profit (PPOP) growth. Additionally, credit costs are likely to inch up due to seasonal rise in slippages and ageing provisions. The report expects margins to continue contracting by a cumulative 22-35 basis points till the second quarter of FY26. Margins are likely to stabilise in Q3 and begin to expand again from Q4 onwards. Ban On Buying And Selling Of Land Around Noida-Ganga Link Expressway, 56 Villages Affected

Last Updated: UPEIDA banned land transactions along the proposed 74.3 km expressway linking Noida Airport to the Ganga Expressway, impacting 56 villages and boosting western UP connectivity In a major move to facilitate rapid infrastructure development around the Noida International Airport, the Uttar Pradesh Industrial Corridor Development Authority (UPEIDA) has imposed a complete ban on land purchase and sale along the alignment of the proposed 74.3-kilometre-long expressway that will link the upcoming airport to the Ganga Expressway. The directive, issued by UPEIDA, comes as groundwork intensifies for the high-speed corridor, which is also designed to connect the Ganga Expressway with the Yamuna Expressway, effectively knitting together three of the state's most ambitious transport projects. Officials have warned of strict action against individuals or entities found violating the order. The Ganga Expressway itself is a Rs 4,000 crore mega-project set to connect Meerut to Prayagraj. The new link expressway, beginning from the Syana region of Bulandshahr and culminating near Sector 21's Film City on the Yamuna Expressway, is being positioned as a critical stretch for enhancing multimodal logistics and passenger connectivity in western Uttar Pradesh. In response to UPEIDA's order, district administrations in Noida and Bulandshahr have initiated surveys to identify plots falling under the notified zone. Officials are mapping affected areas and marking impacted land parcels for acquisition or regulation. 56 Villages To Be Affected By Route Realignment According to reports, the total width of the new expressway corridor will be 120 metres. In a bid to avoid disturbing existing developed zones in Yamuna City, the route has been strategically altered. As a result, the expressway will now pass through 56 villages, 8 of which lie in Noida district, with the remaining 48 situated in Bulandshahr. The alignment traverses key rural settlements such as Mehndipur Bangar, Bhaiyapur Brahmanan, Rabupura, and Myana in the Noida region. In Khurja tehsil, villages including Amanullahpur, Kapna, and Bhagwanpur will also be impacted. Several panchayats in Syana and Shikarpur tehsils are similarly expected to fall within the expressway's ambit. Industrial, Airport Connectivity Set To Surge Officials from the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) have hailed the project as a cornerstone for the region's economic transformation. They say the expressway will act as a vital artery for boosting freight movement, particularly between the Noida airport and key industrial hubs in Yamuna City such as sectors 28, 29, 32, and 33. With this route, connectivity between Delhi, Agra, Mumbai, and Prayagraj will improve significantly, a senior YEIDA official told The Indian Express, adding that it will not only ease passenger travel but also strengthen logistics across western UP. There is also growing momentum behind the idea of linking the new expressway with National Highway 34 (NH-34), although officials say a concrete blueprint for this connection is still in the works. The sweeping infrastructure push comes on the heels of other major road developments across the state. Just recently, a new 66-kilometre stretch was added to the Delhi-Jaipur route, cutting travel time by nearly an hour and affecting 56 villages along its path.
