Auburn baseball climbs two spots in RPI following sweep of South Carolina The Tigers' chances of grabbing a national seed have increased after a strong showing against South Carolina over the weekend.
Auburn's postseason picture became brighter over the weekend thanks to a strong on-field showing and the results of several key series' across the SEC.
No. 8 Auburn swept South Carolina last weekend at Plainsman Park, outscoring the Gamecocks, 46-15 over the three-game set. The Tigers' impressive performance pushes them to No. 2 in the RPI according to Monday morning's report, they trail only Georgia for the top spot.
According to the latest report published by D1Baseball, Auburn boasts the nation's toughest schedule and has found success against its toughest opponents. The Tigers enter the week with a 14-10 record against quad-1 competition, being one of three programs to have at least 14 wins over teams residing in the category, joining Texas and Vanderbilt. Auburn is 5-1 against quad-2 teams, 9-1 against quad-3 teams, and 8-3 against quad-4 teams. This week, Auburn has a quad-3 opportunity against Jax State at home on Tuesday, and will conclude the regular season at Ole Miss, a quad-1 series, beginning Thursday.
Auburn won its series over South Carolina due to productive hitting at the plate. Auburn logged 51 hits with nine doubles, a triple, and 11 home runs against South Carolina pitching. Eric Guevara had the best weekend of all by recording 12 total hits with two doubles, a triple, and two home runs. He was responsible for scoring nine of Auburn's 46 runs.
Auburn head coach Butch Thompson has been pleased with his team's efforts over the last two weeks, now he hopes to get another strong weekend out of his club before making the trek to Hoover for the SEC Tournament.
'This is a three-week push, and now that two weeks are out of the way, we've got one more midweek home game and then travel for our series,' Thompson said. 'We have one more week to keep our head down and keep trying to play, and we will reevaluate and get ready for the (SEC) tournament.'
Auburn baseball concludes the regular season this week, starting Tuesday at home against Jax State. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT at Plainsman Park.

Both teams enter the weekend on hot streaks by winning all three games played in last weekend's regional action.
