Administrative sanction accorded for reconstruction of KC bridge

The Hindu18-06-2025
The State government has accorded administrative sanction for the reconstruction of the KC bridge in Kuttanad. The bridge on the Kidangara-Kannadi road will be constructed at a cost of ₹42.32 crore in the EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) mode.
Public Works Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas said the decision to reconstruct the KC bridge with increased height was taken because boats were unable to pass under it when the water level rises in the canal, which is part of the National Waterway. The new bridge has been designed in accordance with the standards of the National Waterway.
Mr. Riyas said the bridge would be built at a height of six metres from the highest water level (HTL) in the canal. Land acquisition for the project has been completed at a cost of ₹2.65 crore, the Minister said.
Officials said that tenders would be invited after receiving final nod from the Inland Waterways Authority.

K-RIDE calls it ‘clear violation of conditions' after L&T terminates Bengaluru suburban rail contracts

Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Enterprises (K-RIDE) has strongly criticised Larsen & Toubro (L&T) for unilaterally terminating its contracts for Corridor-2 (Chikkabanavara–Bennigenahalli) and Corridor-4 (Heelalige–Rajankunte) of the Bengaluru Suburban Railway Project (BSRP), calling it a 'clear violation' of agreement conditions. In a release issued on Saturday, K-RIDE stated that the contracts, valid till September and October 2026, respectively, do not permit unilateral termination by the contractor. 'Termination of these two contracts by L&T, received on July 31, is not expected from L&T,' it said. K-RIDE alleged that L&T had made unreasonable demands, such as revising contract prices mid-way and converting the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction(EPC) contract into an itemised Bill of Quantities(BOQ) contract, both of which are not permitted under the current agreement. Despite addressing all reasonable concerns through the contractual mechanisms, L&T went ahead with the termination, the release said. The K-RIDE, which is implementing the Bengaluru suburban project, noted that 84% of the work front in Corridor-2 and 17 km in Corridor-4 were already made available to L&T, but progress remained unsatisfactory. K-RIDE attributed delays to poor mobilisation, frequent changes in project managers, and slow design finalisation.

Lax monitoring by TNCSC emboldens traders to sell paddy at DPCs: Farmers

MADURAI: Farmers have alleged that inadequate monitoring by the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation (TNCSC), traders starting to sell paddy illegally at Direct Procurement Centre's (DPCs) have delayed the procurement process. They have also urged the government to take action against the issue. However, refusing the allegations, official sources from TNCSC said that frequent inspections are being done by the department. With the summer paddy cultivation nearing completion, the TNCSC has opened nearly 18 DPCs for procuring the summer paddy in Madurai. The farmers have raised allegations about issues in selling their paddy at these centres. Speaking about the issue, Manikandan, a farmer leader from Usilampatti, said, 'Despite submitting a series of petitions about issues in DPCs, including traders selling their paddy, no actions were taken by the department concerned. Even now, many farmers are forced to wait for nearly a week to sell their paddy at DPCs.
