Robot steals the show at Nadakkavu Girls HSS as new academic year kicks in Kozhikode

There was a special guest who welcomed students at the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School for Girls, Nadakkavu, Kozhikode city, on the first day of the academic year on Monday (June 2, 2025). iPAL, a robot designed and created by the students of Nilgiri College of Arts and Science, Tamil Nadu, made the 'Praveshanolsavam', the event to mark the first day, memorable. The students were seen curiously milling around the robot to see how it works. The district-level 'Praveshanolsavam' event was at the Government Higher Secondary School, Peringolam. Opening the event, Minister for Public Works P.A. Mohamed Riyas said that the curriculum implemented in schools this year would focus on humanism and civic sense. There would be sessions for the purpose in the coming two weeks. Zumba dance practice would be made part of the studies in a bid to enhance the physical fitness of the students and also for their mental rejuvenation. The ongoing campaign against substance abuse would be strengthened further. A project to improve the quality of education was also being implemented this year. P.T.A. Rahim, MLA, and Sheeja Sasi, Kozhikode district panchayat president, among others, were present. GHSS Peringalam to host ‘Pravesanolsavam' in Kozhikode this year

The Kozhikode district-level 'Pravesanolsavam' for the upcoming academic year will be held at the Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS), Peringalam, on June 2. Minister for Public Works P.A. Mohamed Riyas will open the event. An official meeting was held here on Monday (May 26) to review the preparations for the school's reopening. District Collector Snehil Kumar Singh directed police and Excise officials to monitor institutions where a high number of substance abuse cases and clashes between students had been reported. Manoj Maniyoor, Deputy Director of Education (DDE), told the meeting that over 60,000 new students would take admissions this year. He said that 93% of textbooks had been distributed. The fitness tests of school buildings had been completed except for those within the Kozhikode Corporation limits. The meeting decided to examine the quality of drinking water in schools and cut down the trees that pose a threat to the safety of students. The committees formed against substance abuse would meet soon. An awareness and training session would be held for school bus drivers. All the cooks involved in the noon meal scheme had been given health cards. Meanwhile, Mr. Singh directed the DDE not to reopen the schools within the Corporation limits as the buildings were yet to get their fitness certificates. The government had earlier asked engineers in the respective local bodies to inspect the fitness of school buildings and vehicles in view of the strengthening of the South West monsoon. They were also directed to take steps to chop trees from the premises if they posed a threat to the safety of students and the school staff. However, it was pointed out that the officials attached to the Kozhikode Corporation had not examined the buildings within the local body and were yet to give the fitness certificates. Their counterparts in other local bodies have already provided the documents. The DDE told the meeting that the Corporation officials were denying the certificates, citing silly reasons. Official sources said that the schools within the corporation limits would reopen only if the fitness certificates were provided by June 2.

LDF government's self-congratulatory progress report cannot fool people: Satheesan

Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan on Saturday accused the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government of misleading the public with a progress report that praises itself while ignoring glaring failures. Addressing a press conference in Kottayam, Mr. Satheesan said the LDF government's fourth anniversary report released by the government 'hides more than it reveals.' 'The progress report was drafted before the national highways began to crumble. Those who once took credit for these projects are now nowhere to be seen. If they went to the damaged spots and shot a few reels, that would at least be somewhat useful,' he quipped, in an apparent reference to Minister for Public Works P.A. Mohamed Riyas. He also demanded a comprehensive investigation into allegations of corruption in the construction of National Highway 66, along with inquiries into lapses in engineering supervision and the questionable awarding of sub-contracts. Financial woes Mr. Satheesan also dismissed the Chief Minister's recent assertion that there was no financial crisis in the State. 'If that is true, then why hasn't the government paid the Medical Services Corporation Ltd, Supplyco, ASHA workers, or mid-day meal kitchen staff?' he asked. Citing dues of ₹60,000 crore in salary arrears, unpaid bills in the Jal Jeevan Mission and the loss incurred by KSEB, Mr. Satheesan alleged widespread financial mismanagement. 'Rubber support price has remained low, while procurement of paddy and coconuts has failed. The coastal and high-range development packages, which were announced with much fan-fare, remain unimplemented,' he said. The Opposition leader also exuded confidence about the United Democratic Front (UDF)'s prospects in the upcoming local body elections and held that it is poised for a significant victory.
