
COS artwork project elevates London, Paris and Helsinki stores
H&M Group's London-based COS brand has launched a collaboration with another London-based business, interior design specialist Studio Ashby under founder and creative director Sophie Ashby, to unveil a curated selection of artworks by mainly British women artists.
Displayed in 'reimagined store environments' on the city's Regent Street, as well as Rue Tronchet in Paris and a recently opened location on Aleksanterinkatu in Helsinki, it 'reinforces the brand's deep-rooted connection to modern culture – a consistent source of inspiration,' we're told.
Each artwork has been 'thoughtfully integrated into the store interiors, creating warm and immersive environments where fashion, art and culture intersect'.
They'll remain part of the COS collection longer term and are designed to 'serve as a synergic backdrop to COS' collections'.
While most of the artists chosen are British, in the London flagship, Finnish artist Milla Vaahtera has been chosen for a lighting installation that 'fuses bold glass forms with delicate brass, reinterpreting heritage craft techniques with a modern sensibility".
In Paris, a painting by British artist Alice Neave 'explores materiality, colour and texture, joined by the artwork of South African artist Erin Chaplin, examining the relationship between the natural and artificial'.
And the Helsinki store features a woven piece by British artist Dalia James, 'exploring the dynamic interplay of colour and geometry, alongside an evocative oil painting by British artist Anna Ilsley, highlighting the complexities of motherhood'.
COS also said the spaces have been 'elevated by carefully chosen materials — from bespoke micro-paper and plywood tables handmade by Paper Factor to Kasthall's hand-tufted wool rugs, made to order using surplus production yarn'. The details see the retailer experimenting with colour and texture.
It's part of an ongoing process that has seen H&M Group elevating COS, enhancing its overall desirability and making it stand out. That has included it launching its first perfume collection earlier this year and also recent runway initiatives such as last autumn's New York Fashion Week show.
COS has become an in-demand affordable-premium label and has featured in the usually-luxury-focused Lyst Index in recent quarters. It comes in a market that's increasingly embracing premium brands as consumers rethink their addiction to fast-fashion due to its sustainability impact and also their love of luxury as prices go through the roof.

Posts falsely claim Namibia has announced ban on US gas and oil exploration
'Namibia cancelled contract with US from Mining their OIL & GAS,' reads an X post published on May 30, 2025. With more than 16,000 likes, the post adds: 'They ended the Oil & Gas contract with the US and told the US Government to immediately stop all Mining Operations in Namibia as Namibia ventures into State-owned mining operations.' Image Screenshot of the false X post, published on May 28, 2025 The post includes side-by-side photos of Namibia's President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and US President Donald Trump. Similar posts were shared thousands of times more on X and other platforms, including Facebook, TikTok and blogs. Nandi-Ndaitwah, who was elected in March, placed the country's oil and gas industries under direct presidential control the day after her inauguration. They previously fell under the Ministry of Energy and Mines (archived here). However, the government has not announced the cancellation of any energy contracts with the United States. No announcements A keyword search for 'Namibia cancels oil and gas with the US' turned up more posts repeating the false claim, as well as articles debunking it (archived here). The posts began circulating at about the same time as claims debunked by AFP Fact Check alleging that Namibia had announced the deportation of 500 Americans. As reported by AFP in April, Nandi-Ndatiwah explained that the oil and gas sector had the potential to transform Namibia's economy within the next five years by securing energy supplies and creating jobs (archived here). 'Mining contributes 12 percent to our gross domestic product and over 50 percent of our foreign exchange earnings. Regrettably, this figure does not reflect the true potential of mining and our mineral resources,' she was quoted as saying. On May 30, 2025, her presidency responded to the viral posts by labelling them 'fake news' (archived here). Namibia's presidency reiterated this to AFP Fact Check on June 4, 2025. 'The Namibian government has not at any point cancelled any contracts with investors from the United States in the mining, oil and gas sectors,' said press secretary Alfredo Hengari. He added that 'it is not the policy of the government to cancel contracts that are binding'. A US State Department spokesperson told AFP Fact Check on June 11, 2025: 'The online claims that Namibia has cut off the United States from mining and gas are false.' Foreign investment Contrary to the claim, Namibia has become a global exploration hotspot with several international gas and oil companies actively exploring its coasts in recent years (archived here). At the start of 2025, American firm Chevron announced that it had not found commercially viable gas in Namibia's Orange Basin By April, however, the company confirmed it would continue exploration in the Walvis Basin in 2026 or 2027, where firms including TotalEnergies, Shell, and Galp have made discoveries. Similarly, British multinational Shell deemed its Namibia oil discoveries uncommercial due to high gas levels in January. However, France's TotalEnergies believes it can handle these geological challenges, but its investment decision hinges on maintaining production costs below $20 per barrel (archived here). New night train to connect 100 European cities by 2035
Sleeper trains are enjoying a booming renaissance in Europe at the moment, but some travellers are still put off by the idea of sharing a cabin with strangers. While many night services offer two-bed or single cabins, they are usually an expensive option and tend to sell out quickly.. Now, a new company is launching sleeper trains with entirely private rooms - and they promise tickets won't be more than the price of a flight. Nox, a Berlin-based startup, says its mission is to offer a real alternative to short-haul flights in Europe. From 2027, the company plans to operate its first Europe-wide overnight trains with cabins designed for one or two passengers. 'Sleeping while a train gets you across Europe is a great concept. But today people have to share their cabins with strangers, beds are tight, and it's often more expensive than air travel,' says Thibault Constant, co-founder of Nox. 'We want to change that and make night trains an essential part of European travel.' Constant, who is known as 'Simply Railway' to his over half a million social media followers, has more than 400 night train trips worldwide under his belt. He says this experience has been a crucial influence on the design of the new sleepers. There will be three room categories: a single loft for one passenger with an upper-level bed and a seat and table; a double loft with a double upper-level bed and two seats and a table; and a double vista with easy-entry beds, the lower of which converts into seating. All three room categories will have two-metre-long beds, and enough space to stand up and store your luggage. Some cabins will also offer windows with panoramic views. Fellow founder Janek Smalla says the room design allows them to fit more people into their trains than traditional operators can. 'This, paired with a strict focus on standardisation and operational excellence, will allow us to offer affordable fares on over 35 European routes,' he adds. The aim is to offer night train connections between 100 European cities by 2035. These include Paris, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Warsaw, Budapest and Rome. The company wants the network to become a viable alternative to short-haul flights, saying it aims to 'offer ticket prices as low as air fares'. Interested travellers can already explore planned timetables and prices on the Nox website. Single rooms will start at €79 and double rooms at €149. There will be a food and drink service on board, space for bikes, and wheelchair-accessible coaches. Travellers can join the free Early Bird Club to stay updated, receive discounted rates, and gain early access to bookings.

Germany's BioNTech to buy CureVac to boost cancer research
BioNTech, which developed the first coronavirus vaccine to be approved in the West along with US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, said the acquisition would "bring together complementary capabilities and leverage technologies". Both biotech companies have been working for years in the area of mRNA vaccines and treatments, which provoke an immune response by delivering genetic molecules containing the code for key parts of a pathogen into human cells. While the technology became well known in relation to some Covid-19 vaccines, it is also being used in other areas, and scientists believe it could be a game-changer against many diseases. BioNTech said the acquisition of CureVac would help boost its work in the field of mRNA-based cancer immunotherapy -- treatment that uses the body's own immune system to fight diseases. "This transaction is another building block in BioNTech's oncology strategy and an investment in the future of cancer medicine," said BioNTech CEO Ugur Sahin. It was aimed at "establishing new standards of care for various types of cancer in the coming years," he said. Alexander Zehnder, CEO of CureVac, said the purchase would bring scientific expertise, technology and manufacturing know-how "in the mRNA field under one roof". BioNTech's all-stock acquisition has been unanimously approved by the companies' management and supervisory boards, and is expected to close in 2025, subject to certain conditions including regulatory approvals. Both companies are listed on the Nasdaq Composite Index. They had both sought to develop Covid-19 vaccines during the pandemic, with Mainz-based BioNTech's Comirnaty jab winning approval and going on to become one of the most widely used shots against the virus around the world. But Tuebingen-based CureVac, founded 25 years ago by mRNA pioneer Ingmar Hoerr, abandoned its efforts in late 2021 after disappointing trial results. In 2022, CureVac sued BioNTech for patent infringement over its rival's use of the technology.
