‘Factually incorrect… 2nd again' – Mikel Arteta brutally trolled for getting numbers wrong in awkward press conference
The Gunners start their season with a trip to Old Trafford against Manchester United on Sunday, where they will be hoping to avoid losing precious ground in the title race early on.

Following three seasons of finishing as the runner-up, twice to Manchester City and once to Liverpool, Arteta has backed his team's consistency as the key to finally winning that elusive title.
Speaking to reporters, he said: "You keep digging, digging, digging and you have to be digging because one day the gold is going to be there.
"That's all the time. When I've been taught, when I've been educated, that's it."
The 43-year-old continued: "For three seasons we've had more points than any other team in this league, which is incredible. That's how you have all the consistency.
"Now we have to do it in a season to have one more point or the same amount of points and more goals different than any other team. That's the objective.'
However, while Arteta is a tactical mastermind at the Emirates, his numbers were a little wide of the mark.
Over the last three completed seasons, Arsenal have racked up an aggregate of 247 points: 84 in 2022/23, 89 in 2023/24 and 74 in 2024/25.
And while those tallies are doubtless impressive on their own merits, it is still eclipsed by Arteta's former master, Pep Guardiola.
Arsenal's rise towards the top came halfway through City's unprecedented four-peat of titles between 2020/21 and 2023/24.
In the latter half of that run, City put up 89 and 91 points to claim the title, before a dramatic dip off last year saw them finish third with 71 points.
Mikel Arteta asked Arsenal stars to vote for club captain as he reveals winner 'by 100 miles'
But despite the fall off, the Etihad outfit have a higher points total than Arsenal, with 251 points.
Meanwhile, reigning champions Liverpool have a total of 233 in the last three seasons: 67 in 2022/23, 82 in 2023/24 and 84 in 2024/25.
Yet it is easy to suspect Arne Slot and co won't care too much considering they got their hands on silverware while Arsenal didn't.
Brainiac fans were quick to point this out in response, with one saying: "Factually incorrect - in the past 3 seasons it's City 251, Arsenal 247, Liverpool 233. 2nd again."
A second said: "Three seasons we've had more points than other team in this league… where is the title please?"
A third added: "They should stop digging and start playing football."
Another said: "How does this make sense to him. The team with the highest points per season wins EPL not an accumulation of points over the years.
"It's high time Arsenal get rid of this man cause he has absolutely lost it."
A fifth said: "Arteta out here sounding like he's giving a TED Talk for miners instead of a title race press conference."
SunSport also took a look at how some of the other Premier League sides have fared with their points totals over the last three seasons.
Completing the top four is Newcastle with 197 points, with Aston Villa closely behind on 195 claiming the final Champions League spot in this mini-league.
Despite the historic lows of last season, Man Utd rank 6th in this criteria with 177 points.
This is a single point more than Chelsea, who have spent over a billion pounds to become competitive again.
Savvy recruiters Brighton had quite the dip off in Roberto de Zerbi 's final season, but saw their average go back up under Fabian Hurzeler for the Seagulls to hit an impressive total of 171.
Tottenham are behind them following their historically-poor league campaign last time out, with 164 points totted up - although if they had hit the 60 mark again, they would have been on over 180.
Brentford also suffered a dip two seasons ago as they adjusted to losing big names like Ivan Toney, but still jotted up a total of 154 points.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin a gamble worth taking for Leeds
The 28-year-old striker, dogged by injury in recent seasons, became a free agent this summer, ending nine years at Everton and signing a three-year deal with Leeds on Friday in a bid to revive his career. He could make his debut against his former club on Monday when the two sides launch their Premier League campaigns at Elland Road. 🎙️ "Dominic is a proven Premier League player" — Leeds United (@LUFC) August 16, 2025 Farke said: 'Let's be open about it. It's always a bit risky to sign players who've had difficult years with a few injuries. There are always question marks and doubts. 'But the second part of the truth is that if he had his prime season last season he wouldn't be on the market for us. 'He wouldn't be a free agent and affordable for a newly promoted side, so you have to think about the balance of risk and reward.' Calvert-Lewin has struggled to replicate the goalscoring form which saw him earn 11 caps for England, making his last appearance against Ukraine in 2021 in the European Championship quarter-finals. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has scored four goals in 11 senior appearances for England (Nick Potts/PA) He scored 21 goals in 38 appearances in all competitions for Everton during the 2020-21 season, but has failed to reach double figures since. 'If he can reach his former heights everyone will celebrate and tell us it's a bargain for us to get a striker who is normally not affordable for a newly promoted side, so well done,' Farke said. 'But the worst-case scenario is that yes, perhaps his injuries will limit a bit his time here for Leeds United – that's the second part of the truth. 'But it's important for us we have not spent one pound in transfer fees because he is a free agent, so it's not much of a risk.' 🔜 The roar of Elland Road awaits! — Leeds United (@LUFC) August 15, 2025 Calvert-Lewin is reported to have turned down the offer of a three-year contract worth £18million from Fenerbahce in favour of a move to Leeds. Farke added: 'He's so highly motivated to play for this club. He's fully committed and still has the desire to reach his former heights. 'In the end this was a no-brainer for me because we can win a lot, but we don't lose much and didn't risk anything on a transfer fee because he's a free agent. 'We still have money then to also strengthen in a few other positions. 'So looking at the whole picture, yes there are a few question marks and a few doubts, but the chances are way higher than the problems or the risk.'

Arsenal star in talks to leave after being left out of squad against Man Utd
Jakub Kiwior is in talks to leave Arsenal and join Portuguese giants Porto before the summer transfer window closes. The Poland international was left out of the Gunners squad that took on Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday. A goal after 13 minutes from Riccardo Calafiori was enough to seal all three points for Mikel Arteta's side in their opening game of the new Premier League season. Kiwior has been repeatedly linked with a move away from north London during the summer with interest from Porto emerging earlier this month. Reports in Portugal suggested Porto had given up on a prospective move after learning of Arsenal's huge £26m asking price. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. The club have since signed Jan Bednarek in a €7.5m (£6.5m) deal from Southampton but latest reports suggest Porto have not given up on a move and are back in talks with the player. Polish outlet Meczyki claim a deal is being discussed with hope of an agreement being reached next week. Kiwior's preference is to join a club away from the Premier League if Arsenal decide to cash in. More Trending William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes are the firm first-choice pairing in north London with Jurrien Timber, Ben White and Riccardo Calafiori all capable of operating at centre-half. While he has been a backup option since joining from Spezia in a deal worth £20m in January 2023, Kiwior proved his worth last season after Arsenal lost Gabriel to a hamstring injury. 'He deserves a lot of credit because he hasn't played too much throughout many months, and suddenly he's been thrown into the most difficult context, at the highest level, playing against the best opponents, when you haven't had the physical rhythm or the confidence to do it, and I think he's been exceptional,' Arteta said. Oleksandr Zinchenko, Reiss Nelson and Fabio Viera were also left out of the squad with Arsenal sanctioning exits for the trio.
