All two-wheelers to come with ABS from next year

Time of India20-06-2025
Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) will become mandatory for all two-wheelers sold in the country from January 1 as part of a proposed new safety regulation by the government. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is likely to issue a notification soon on the matter, said people aware of the matter.
The step is aimed at arresting high incidence of road accidents involving motorcycles and scooters. It will extend the current ABS mandate-applicable only to models above 150cc-to the entire two-wheeler segment, including entry-level variants which comprise about 75% of the domestic market.
ABS is designed to prevent wheel lock-up during sudden braking, reducing the likelihood of skidding and crashes. This is achieved by rapidly pushing the brakes, preventing the wheels from skidding and allowing the driver to steer around obstacles.
Two-wheelers were involved in nearly 20% of India's 151,997 road accidents in 2022, according to latest available government data.
"This is a long-needed measure," said Rohit Baluja, director at the Institute of Road Traffic and Education (IRTE), a non-profit organisation dedicated to road safety and traffic management. "Many pedestrian accidents are caused by abrupt braking without vehicle control."
While the safety benefits of ABS are widely acknowledged, the government mandate is expected to inflate production costs for manufacturers, which is likely to be passed on to consumers in the coming months. Analysts estimate prices for entry-level two-wheeler models to rise by '2,500 to '5,000 per vehicle, potentially dampening demand in a price-sensitive segment.
"Any regulation that adds cost tends to weigh on demand," said an analyst at a domestic brokerage. "This one is no different."
Motorcycle models with 75cc to 125cc engines accounted for two-thirds of domestic sales in FY25, according to brokerage Nomura. Sales rose 4.6% to 9.26 million motorcycles last fiscal. Scooter sales rose 17% to 6.85 million units in the same period.
"Two-wheelers account for 44% of road fatalities in India. Hence, improving their safety is a major priority and introduction of ABS for all two wheelers was much needed," said KK Kapila, president emeritus at International Road Federation, a global road safety body. He said the cost factor will not be much while stressing that safety is much more important.
"Two-wheelers are the lifeline of major cities in the country despite improvement in public transport and we have to live with them. The only way to reduce road accidents is to find ways and means to make them safe with use of technology," he said.

More women than men applying for driving licence pledge to donate organs

NEW DELHI: Women do not just constitute most living organ donors, data shows they outnumber men when it comes to percentage of applicants for driving licence pledging to become deceased donors in case of fatal accidents. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Ministry of road transport and highways, in Sept 2023, introduced a provision to pledge for organ donation in case of death while applying for a driver's licence. According to data on such pledges in 2024, which was shared by National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (Notto) Saturday, 9.8% women applicants pledged to donate their organs in case of death compared to 8.9% men. Maximum 26.7% women pledged their organs while applying for driver's licence in Delhi, followed by Odisha (21.9%), Mizoram (21%), Maharashtra (20.9%) and UP (16.8%). In terms of absolute numbers, men significantly outnumbered women as they constituted maximum applicants for driving licences. Anil Kumar, director of Notto, said the conversion rate of pledges into actual donations is yet to be known. "Since Sept 2023, some 3.6 lakh people have pledged to donate their organs," he said. Between 1995 and 2021, the male-female ratio in terms of number of organ recipients was 4:1. Govt data shows this rate is slowly coming down. In 2022, govt told Parliament, this ratio came down to 2.3:1. According to the annual report on organ donations in 2024-25, released on the eve of Organ Donation Day on Saturday, India carried out nearly 19,000 transplants. Of them, 3,403 (17%) were carried out using organs retrieved from deceased donors or persons declared brain dead and the rest by living persons.

Slurry tunnel boring machines to be deployed for Bengaluru Twin Tunnel Road Project

Slurry tunnel boring machines (TBMs) will be deployed for the construction of Twin Tunnel Road between Hebbal Esteem Mall Junction and Silk Board Junction in Bengaluru. The Special Purpose Vehicle, B-SMILE, has ruled out the alternative option of using hard rock TBMs, which are generally more suitable for boulder-heavy terrains. Although this was considered, B-SMILE ultimately preferred slurry TBMs due to Bengaluru's geological composition, which is a combination of boulders and soil. B.S. Prahlad, director (Technical), B-SMILE, told The Hindu that hard rock TBMs had been used in a tunnel project in Mumbai, but issues were encountered there. 'So, we opted for slurry TBMs instead,' he said. Slurry TBMs use hydraulic methods to transport the excavated material and are best suited for mixed terrain. Namma Metro has traditionally used a combination of slurry TBMs and Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBMs. 'As our terrain is mixed in nature, there's a high risk of damage to the blades of Hard Rock TBMs. In contrast, slurry TBMs use bentonite, which allows the springs or blades to adjust based on the pressure exerted on the excavator, making it ideal for Bengaluru's terrain,' Mr. Prahlad explained. Bentonite, a type of clay, plays a crucial role in slurry TBM operations by helping regulate pressure. The government has finalised the use of eight TBMs for the project. These will be deployed from five to six different launching shafts to begin excavation. Mr. Prahallad mentioned that the entire project tender has been issued under the Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer (BOOT) model, which means that the winning bidders will be responsible for procuring the TBMs themselves. When asked about the technical specifications of the TBMs, Mr. Prahlad clarified that it is up to the contractors to decide whether to purchase the machines outright or assemble them locally. Historically, TBMs used in Bengaluru (by Namma Metro) have averaged a progress rate of 1.6 to 1.7 km per year. While similar efficiency is expected for this tunnel project, the deciding factor will be the nature of the terrain encountered during excavation. According to Mr. Prahallad, B-SMILE has only provided the borewell survey report along with the tender documents, in compliance with guidelines from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Any further geological analysis is the responsibility of the contractors, given the BOOT model structure of the project. 'The tender clearly states that supporting documents, such as geotechnical data, are to be treated as references only. The contractors are required to conduct their own in-depth analyses,' Mr. Prahlad said. The Detailed Project Report had originally specified that intrusive surveys would be conducted well before the tendering process. However, with the current model, the responsibility for detailed analysis now rests with the successful bidder. B-SMILE has rolled out tenders for the 16.7 km long twin tunnel project, aimed at decongesting the city by connecting northern and southern parts. T.J. Renukaprasad, retired professor of geology, explained that the rationale behind choosing slurry TBMs could be to seal the fracture points in the terrain. 'Bengaluru has hard rock terrain, which predominantly has peninsular gneissic rock and is also intruded by many rocks like granite and dolerite. Due to geotechnical activities, there are fractures developed in the terrain; to cement those fractures, they may be using slurry TBMs,' Mr. Renukaprasad said. He explained that these rocks in the Bengaluru terrain are over 3,200 million years old, and some are 2,500 years old.
