NFL insider Ian Rapoport gives latest on Jonnu Smith trade rumors: 'He wants a lot'
Jonnu Smith is angling for a new contract, but NFL Network's Ian Rapoport isn't convinced that means he'll be traded by the Miami Dolphins anytime soon.
"He is actually a part of what the Dolphins want to do," Rapoport said of Smith in a Friday appearance on The Pat McAfee Show. "It feels to me like he wants more money, but would like to stay [in Miami]. I know he wants a lot. We'll see what they end up doing.
"But going back to the [Jalen] Ramsey thing. If they are able to trade Jalen Ramsey, that's $21 million -- some of the $21 million will come off the books, depending on how much they pay. Trading Ramsey might help Jonnu Smith get the contract he wants, as well."
Smith, 29, earned Pro Bowl honors in 2024 after breaking Dolphins franchise records for receptions (88), receiving yards (884), and receiving touchdowns (8) by a tight end.
However, he ranks 32nd among tight ends sorted by average salary per year. While nine tight ends are earning at least $12 million per year, Smith is set to play on the second season of a two-year, $8.4 million contract.
It's no surprise that Smith wants a sizable pay bump. How high he sets his asking price could be what determines whether or not he's dealt elsewhere.

Bills Given Top Credit For QB-HC Duo
Bills Given Top Credit For QB-HC Duo originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Buffalo Bills have had one of the best quarterback and head coaching duos in the NFL over the last several seasons now. It's unclear exactly how good one of their duo is, though. Advertisement As important as head coach Sean McDermott has been to the success of the Bills in recent seasons, he has also kept them from attaining their ultimate goal: a Super Bowl. In many ways, league MVP Josh Allen has carried the Bills and their head coach in recent years. Buffalo hasn't been good enough to knock off some of the top contenders in the league, but have a quarterback who has been able to keep games close. It's why NFL reporter Matt Verderame ranked Buffalo's duo fifth overall, but with Allen as the No. 2 quarterback and McDermott as the No. 15 coach. 'The Bills have the reigning MVP at quarterback and a coach who, for his conservative flaws, has guided Buffalo to five consecutive AFC East titles," Verderame said. "Buffalo is a Super Bowl contender led by Allen, who last year reached his second AFC title game last year, amassing 4,262 total yards and 40 touchdowns. Advertisement "The offense should be high-powered once more despite not having a great receiver, while McDermott's defense is the big question mark.' This is going to be a big year for McDermott. He needs to prove he can get his defense to play at a high level and help his otherworldly quarterback. If not, there's good reason to suspect that the Bills may have to move on from their successful head coach. Bills Suspended Edge Rusher Still Thrilled To Join Team
Bills Suspended Edge Rusher Still Thrilled To Join Team originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Former Los Angeles Rams edge rusher Michael Hoecht knows he let his new team in the Buffalo Bills down. Shortly before coming to terms on a three-year deal in free agency, the defensive line tweener was notified that he was in violation of the league's PED policy - worthy of a six-game suspension. Advertisement Buffalo didn't care, though. They still signed him knowing that they will need a versatile player of his caliber to match-up against the top teams in the conference. That message of loyalty was important for Hoecht and a big reason why he wanted to come to Western New York. Playing for a Super Bowl contender certainly helps as well. "We've got loaded talent, top to bottom. So more than anything, more than money on [a] contract, I'm a football junkie," Hoecht said on the Ross Tucker Podcast. "I think, more than anything in the world, I think it's so cool going to a team that's going to be good. A team, hopefully, if all goes well according to plan, deep in the playoffs, and a chance to bring a Lombardi [Trophy] to Western New York. It couldn't be a more exciting team to be a part of." Advertisement It will be a little bit before Hoecht can suit up for the Bills. His six-game suspension, though, is perfectly placed in the team's schedule. Buffalo is on a bye week the following week Hoecht is reinstated - it will allow him to acclimate himself quickly to his new team. And prove to his new team why they were right to stand by him after all. The Patriots just gave Bills ex Stefon Diggs $26 million guaranteed ... and might be regretting that decision.
The Patriots just gave Bills ex Stefon Diggs $26 million guaranteed ... and might be regretting that decision. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Former Buffalo Bills star Stefon Diggs is embroiled in controversy as he's moved to the rival New England Patriots ... and moved into potential NFL trouble. Advertisement New Patriots coach Mike Vrabel - who is trying to bring a no-nonsense vibe to the team - said Wednesday that the team is aware of a video that seems to show receiver Diggs - as the AP writes it "passing a bag of pink crystals to women on a boat. .... Diggs, who has been linked to hip-hop star Cardi B this offseason, is shown in a video on social media talking to three women on a boat before he produces a bag of pink crystals. It's not clear what the pink substance was.'' 'Any conversations that I've had with Stefon will remain between him, I and the club,' Vrabel said before a voluntary OTA that Diggs did not attend. That, of course, is not how this works. And now one Patriots insider is suggesting that Diggs in Boston might not work at all. Advertisement First, to Vrabel's assertion ... The NFL has the right to launch an investigation. So do law enforcement officials. And fans devoted to their teams who are paying a player like Diggs on a three-year, $69 million deal that guarantees him $26 million? We will argue that eventually, fans deserve answers, too. For now? 'It's something that we're aware of,' Vrabel said. 'Obviously, we want to make great decisions on and off the field. … The message will be the same for all our players, that we're trying to make great decisions.' Scott Zolak, the former NFL QB now of 98.5 The Sports Hub, believes it's a real possibility that New England might cut its losses here now ... and for reasons that go beyond the controversial boat video. Advertisement "I came to this show yesterday with the opinion -- not opinion, but the knowledge that (cutting Diggs) is on the table," Zolak said on Zolak & Bertrand. "That it is being thought of. And it's not just the boat. It's not just the boat. There are some other things that I've heard that put some things in question. Are you all-in here?'' The AP said an NFL spokesman said the league has so far declined to comment, and that Diggs' agents did not immediately respond to a text from the AP requesting comment. Per the AP: "Other videos from what appears to be the same boat trip show a larger crowd that includes Cardi B, the Grammy-winning rapper who was spotted leaving the Met Gala with Diggs earlier this month. They also sat together at a Boston Celtics-New York Knicks playoff game at Madison Square Garden.'' Advertisement Diggs, 31, signed with the Patriots this year via free agency after one season with the Houston Texans, who acquired the four-time Pro Bowl selection a year ago in a trade with the Bills. Diggs put up six consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons for the Vikings and then the Bills before the trade. Last year, Diggs - who often wore his emotions on his sleeve as part of the Josh Allen-led Bills - he had 47 catches for 496 yards and three touchdowns in eight games for the Texans before a serious knee injury sustained in October. And now? The Patriots just gave him $26 million guaranteed ... and might be regretting that decision.
