Joao Palhinha poised for Premier League return with Tottenham

Rhyl Journal6 days ago
Spurs are eager to boost their squad for new boss Thomas Frank ahead of the club's return to the Champions League this season and set their sights on the Portugal international.
Palhinha only signed for Bayern last summer from Fulham in a deal worth up to £47.4million but endured a difficult debut campaign and made only six starts in Bundesliga, which has opened the door for a return to the Premier League.
Talks between Tottenham and Bayern got under way on Thursday and an agreement has now been reached, PA understands with Palhinha given the green light to undergo a medical ahead of the proposed move.
The midfielder, who turned 30 earlier this month, will join Spurs on a season-long loan with an option included in the deal to make the move permanent for a 30million euros (£26m) fee.
During two years at Craven Cottage, Palhinha quickly became a fan favourite with his all-action style across 79 appearances where he scored eight goals.
It earned the former Sporting Lisbon youngster a big-move move to Bayern, but after struggling for opportunities and making only 25 appearances for the German champions last season, he is set for a return to London.

Man Utd make Rasmus Hojlund transfer decision as Benjamin Sesko deal looms

Manchester United are open to letting Rasmus Hojlund leave on loan if they complete a deal to sign Benjamin Sesko, according to reports in Italy. United appear close to reaching an agreement to sign Sesko after submitting a bid worth €85million (£73.8m). Newcastle United also heavily pursued a deal for the RB Leipzig striker, but Sesko has reportedly indicated that he would prefer to join Ruben Amorim's side. Sesko scored 13 goals in the Bundesliga last season and is expected to lead United's new-look frontline alongside summer signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. The arrival of Sesko also spells uncertainty for Hojlund, who has failed to prove a regular source of goals in his two Premier League campaigns to date. United have reportedly slapped a £30m price tag on the Danish international, who has attracted interest from several Serie A clubs. And Sky Italy now report that the Red Devils are even happy to entertain the possibility of letting Hojlund leave on loan should they sign Sesko as expected. AC Milan are one of the clubs at the front of the queue to sign Hojlund, with other reports suggesting they may propose a loan deal with an option to buy. Hojlund, however, has publicly asserted his desire to stay at Old Trafford and fight for his spot in the team regardless of who comes through the door in the summer. 'I think my plan is very clear and that is for me to stay and fight for my spot whatever happens,' he said last month. More Trending 'I am still very young. I think people sometimes forget that. I am only 22 years old. I have learned a lot, and I think that shows in my game. 'I have done very well so far during the pre-season.' Elsewhere, United are looking to upgrade their options in midfield and have reportedly opened talks with Brighton over Carlos Baleba. The talented Cameroonian midfielder still has three years left on his contract and could command a fee of £100m to prise him away from Brighton. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Tottenham have £36m bid for Nico Paz rejected

Tottenham have seen their €40 million (£34.6m) bid for Nico Paz rejected by Como, according to reports in Italy. The 20-year-old, who was born in Tenerife but represents Argentina at international level, joined Como in a €6m (£5m) deal from Real Madrid last year. Paz impressed in his first season in Serie A with six goals and eight assists and has already been linked with a return to Madrid. Spurs, meanwhile, remain in the market for a new attacking midfielder after failing to sign Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest. Tottenham's need for further midfield reinforcements has also been heightened this week as James Maddison is expected to miss the majority of the upcoming season with an ACL injury. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – click here and sign up before Friday to make sure you don't miss the first edition. According to Sky Sport Italy's Gianluca Di Marzio, Spurs have begun talks with Como to sign Paz but their opening bid of €40m (£34.6m) has been turned down by the Serie A side. The report claims that Como value Paz at €70m (£60.7m) and Spurs would need to offer at least €60m (£52m) for a deal to be considered. Real Madrid are also a factor as they included clause as part of their deal to sell Paz to Como last year which allows them to match Spurs' offer, or receive 50 per cent of midfielder's sell-on fee. Speaking at the end of last season, Como's head coach, Cesc Fabregas, made it clear to Paz that he will need regular playing time if he wants to secure a place in Argentina's World Cup squad next summer. More Trending 'We don't know anything, he's our player and for now he's staying with us,' Fabregas said. 'It's important for him to play next season, which will lead to the World Cup. 'I don't know if he's ready for Real Madrid yet , we have an excellent relationship with them because we're very interested in other players from their squad, and they know we play young players. 'If they need us, we're here, but for now they haven't told us anything.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Tottenham confirm major injury blow as James Maddison faces knee surgery

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison is set to miss the majority of the new season after the club confirmed he has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Maddison missed the end of the 2024-25 campaign with a knee injury, but returned last month to feature in pre-season under new boss Thomas Frank. England international Maddison continued his comeback with a substitute appearance in a 1-1 draw with Newcastle in South Korea on Sunday, but collapsed in pain with no one around him and subsequently left the pitch on a stretcher in the 86th minute. Spurs' worst fears have now been confirmed with Maddison set to undergo surgery in the coming days on his ACL injury. We can confirm that James Maddison will undergo surgery for a ruptured Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in his right knee. We will be supporting you every step of the way, Madders 🤍 — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) August 7, 2025 'We can confirm that James Maddison will undergo surgery for a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee,' a club statement read. 'The 28-year-old midfielder suffered the injury during our pre-season friendly against Newcastle United on Sunday in Seoul. 'His surgery will take place in the coming days and, following that, James will then begin his rehabilitation with our medical team. 'Everyone at Tottenham Hotspur wishes James a full and speedy recovery. We will be supporting him every step of the way.' This news will be a major blow to Spurs head coach Frank, who was already light on attacking midfielder options with Dejan Kulusevski set to miss the start of the season after he had surgery on his right patella in May. Kulusevski's ongoing rehabilitation meant Tottenham were targeting a new number 10 this summer regardless of Maddison's comeback last month. Spurs failed in their efforts to tempt Morgan Gibbs-White away from Nottingham Forest in July and now face greater urgency to sign an attacking midfielder. No timeline has been provided for Maddison's recovery, but an ACL injury tends to sideline a player for between six to 12 months and could rule the England international out of next summer's World Cup. Maddison ruptured his ACL in Son Heung-min's final match for Tottenham before his move to Los Angeles FC. The departure of Son, Spurs' captain last season, and the prolonged absence of vice-captain Maddison will also take away a wealth of experience from Frank's squad ahead of a campaign where they will be expected to juggle Premier League and European commitments better than they managed in the injury-ravaged 2024-25 term.
