Siddaramaiah alleges protocol violation over Sigandur bridge inauguration
Speaking to the media in Bengaluru, Siddaramaiah said, 'We were not consulted prior to scheduling the inauguration. I personally spoke to Minister Gadkari and he agreed to consider rescheduling, but BJP leaders in the state seem to have pushed ahead.' He added that this disregard of protocol was a matter of concern and that no Congress leaders — including local MLAs and ministers — would attend the event as a mark of protest. In his official communication, Siddaramaiah wrote: 'I was not consulted before finalising the Shivamogga National Highway projects' dedication and foundation ceremony on July 14th, despite my name being included. Due to prior commitments in Vijayapura, I have requested Shri @nitin_gadkari to reschedule the event.'
Responding sharply to the Chief Minister's statements, Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka criticized Siddaramaiah, saying, 'While the people of the Sharavathi backwaters region are celebrating the fulfilment of a 60-year dream, decorating their homes and villages for the bridge inauguration, the Chief Minister is creating unnecessary controversy.'
Ashoka further remarked, 'Is this frustration because the Modi-led central government accomplished in one term what Congress couldn't in 60 years? Or did Rahul Gandhi instruct you not to attend the inauguration? When the party high command calls, you rush to Delhi in special flights, but you won't attend a historic inauguration in Karnataka?'
Calling Siddaramaiah's comments 'unfortunate,' Ashoka said, 'The people of Karnataka are truly unlucky to have a leader who chooses political point-scoring over joining citizens in a moment of pride.'

Rahul Gandhi gets bail in controversial defamation case over remarks on Indian Army
A Lucknow court on Tuesday granted bail to Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha and Congress Member of Parliament Rahul Gandhi after he appeared in a defamation case filed over his purported remarks on Army personnel, his lawyer said. The case relates to alleged defamatory remarks against Indian soldiers made during his Bharat Jodo Yatra in 2022, his counsel, advocate Pranshu Agarwal, told news agency PTI. Following his appearance, the Additional CJM Alok Verma-led MP-MLA Court granted Gandhi relief on furnishing two bonds of ₹ 20,000 each. The bail was effected after Gandhi furnished a bail bond and sureties as directed by the court. Gandhi was summoned as an accused after the court took cognisance of the defamation complaint. The Congress leader had moved the high court but failed to get relief. Gandhi appeared in a courtroom full of lawyers. He was taken to the judge's chamber, where the formalities of filing bond and sureties took place. Congress party's state unit president Ajay Rai and in-charge Avinash Pande also accompanied Gandhi. "He (Gandhi) is scheduled to attend the court hearing and would return to Delhi later in the day. He is likely to come to Uttar Pradesh again to visit his constituency Raebareli over the next few days," Rai told PTI before the hearing. Security was beefed up along the route of his travel and in and around the court premises. The defamation complaint was filed by one Uday Shankar Srivastava, a retired director of the Border Roads Organisation (equivalent to the rank of colonel in the Army). The complaint alleged that on December 16, 2022, Gandhi, while addressing various media personnel and the public during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, mentioned the clash between the Indian Army and the Chinese Army on the border of Arunachal Pradesh on December 9 (2022) and said that "people will ask what all about Bharat Jodo Yatra, but will not ask even once about the beating of our soldiers by Chinese soldiers". The complainant alleged his sentiments were hurt by Gandhi's statement about the alleged beating of Indian soldiers by the Chinese soldiers. On February 11, the special court ordered Gandhi to be summoned on charges of defamation.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday defended the state's ongoing eviction drives, stating it is essential to curb illegal encroachment, and warned the indigenous people about a growing demographic shift in the Upper Assam region. Addressing a press conference at Lok Sewa Bhawan, Dispur, the Chief Minister said that over the past four years, the BJP-led government has reclaimed over 160 square kilometres of land from the encroachers who have "succeeded in making Assamese people a minority in South and Central Assam." He further said that while conducting eviction drives, it was found that the encroachers were mostly people who owned land in their native districts, and yet moved to Assam to settle illegally in different parts of the state. "It's not that the people evicted are all landless. Many of them have land elsewhere but move into new areas to encroach forest lands and alter the demographic composition of constituencies," CM Sarma said. He added that the state government has cleared approximately 40,000 acres of encroached land from areas including forest lands, grazing reserves, tribal belts and blocks, and government-owned land. "This area is larger than the city of Chandigarh, which is around 125 square kilometers, and approximately equal to two-thirds of South Delhi," Mr Sarma said. The Chief Minister also said that the intruders are targeting North Assam next, adding, "Had we acted earlier, we might have been able to stop the changes in Lower and Middle Assam. Now it has become irreversible." "Once they become a political force, eviction becomes impossible, and this threatens the identity of the indigenous Assamese people," CM Sarma said. He added that the eviction drives were not only aimed at reclaiming the encroached land, but also restoring ecological balance, highlighting that the government planted lakhs of trees and recovered wildlife habitats in the cleared areas.

Congress draws parallels between the NRC, and the SIR in Bihar
Taking on the Election Commission of India (ECI) over reports that lakhs of illegal persons from Bangladesh, Nepal, and Myanmar had been traced in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, the Congress on Tuesday (July 15, 2025) asked if the poll panel would declare the previous elections 'null and void'. 'If this is true, then the elections in which the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) has won, they did it with the votes of people from Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Nepal. Those elections should be declared null and void,' Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar said during a press conference at the party headquarters. The ECI should not start an exercise like the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the name of revision of electoral rolls, Mr. Kumar said. The SIR should not be about verifying citizenship, which is the purview of the Ministry of Home Affairs, he added. The SIR of the electoral rolls in Bihar showed the poll panel had admitted to what the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, and the Congress party, had been saying — that there was a problem with the electoral rolls, Mr. Kumar said. 'If Rahul Gandhi is right, then the ECI should give the Congress the data it has been asking for. First, they should accept this, and then adopt the right method to rectify it,' he said. 'If they have to revise, it should be done with transparency and given proper time. What would be done in three months? It should be given 13 months or [carried out] over three years... They should revise electoral rolls and not ask for proof of citizenship. That is the job of the Union Home Ministry,' Mr. Kumar said. The Congress leader also expressed grave concern over 'the deteriorating law and order situation in Bihar', alleging that criminals had no fear of the law and were roaming around freely in the State. The education system in Bihar had collapsed under the Janata Dal-United (JD-U)-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regime, he alleged. 'I want to tell the youth that if those in power are not bothered about your future, and are only worried about their chairs (a reference to positions of power), then they should be removed from their chairs,' Mr. Kumar said.
