Saif-led KP team arrives in Beijing
The delegation comprises prominent religious scholars, academics, and political figures. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs received the group with a warm welcome.
During their stay in Beijing, the delegation visited China's first official mosque and held a detailed meeting with the leadership of the Islamic Association of China, including the Chairman and Vice Chairman. The delegation was briefed on the current state of Islamic affairs in China.
Officials shared that there are approximately 35,000 mosques, 55,000 imams, and more than a dozen active Islamic centers across the country. Beijing alone hosts 72 mosques.
Additionally, the Islamic Association operates eight sub-divisions nationwide and organizes various national-level religious competitions. The briefing also highlighted the availability of Quran and Hadith translations in the Chinese language. It was noted that 10,000 Chinese Muslims performed Hajj this year, and several students are currently pursuing religious education at Al-Azhar University in Egypt.
Barrister Dr. Saif expressed gratitude on behalf of Pakistan and termed the visits to Urumqi, Kashgar, and Beijing highly productive. Other delegation members included Mufti Zubair Ashraf Usmani (Vice President, Darul Uloom Karachi), Maulana Abdul Qudoos Muhammadi (Spokesperson, Wifaq-ul-Madaris), Mufti Anwar Shah (Head, Jamia Ahsanul Uloom, Karachi), Haji Muhammad Ibrar (Tablighi Jamaat), Maulana Muhammad Ahmad (Darul Uloom Haqqania) and Syed Shah Faisal (Sadat Movement).
The delegation invited Chinese Islamic leaders to visit Pakistan and offered free education, accommodation, and essential facilities for Chinese students in Pakistani religious institutions. They emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral religious and academic ties and acknowledged the efforts of Israr Madani and the International Research Council for Religious Affairs in facilitating this initiative.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Minister for Religious Affairs Sahibzada Adnan Qadri and Minister for Social Welfare Syed Qasim Ali Shah praised the visit as a significant step in Pakistan-China relations.
Syed Usama Ajmal (Chairman, Pakistan Peace Council) and Syed Shah Faisal also expressed their appreciation to the Chinese government and Islamic Association.
Dr. Zia-ul-Haq presented copies of the 'Paigham-e-Pakistan' document to Chinese counterparts, highlighting its message of peace and unity.
The Chinese hosts also arranged visits for the delegation to the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City, and other key historical and cultural sites. The visit concluded with an exchange of souvenirs, marking a meaningful step towards enhanced religious, educational, and cultural cooperation between Pakistan and China.

Iranian President's visit
Not only has Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian's visit to Pakistan immensely added to the brotherly ties between the two countries, it is also a strong recognition of the fact that their bilateral cooperation that is rooted in religious, cultural and geographical ties has enabled both Iran and Pakistan to register victories over Israel and India, respectively. In his meeting with President Asif Zardari, the latter appreciated Iran's positions on regional issues and acknowledged the Islamic republic's support for regional cooperation. According to media reports, President Zardari thanked Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei for this consistent support for the people of Illegally Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. In fact, Iran's stated position on Kashmir, clearly spelt out by Imam Khomeini, has always been consistent since the overthrow of the Shah of Iran in 1979. China and Russia start joint drills in Sea of Japan

Alongside economic and political ties, Moscow and Beijing have strengthened their military cooperation in recent years, and their relations have deepened since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. The "Joint Sea-2025" exercises kicked off in waters near the Russian port of Vladivostok and would last for three days, China's defence ministry said in a statement on Sunday. The two sides will hold "submarine rescue, joint anti-submarine, air defence and anti-missile operations, and maritime combat". Four Chinese vessels, including guided-missile destroyers Shaoxing and Urumqi, are participating in the exercises alongside Russian ships, the ministry said. After the drills, the two countries will conduct naval patrols in "relevant waters of the Pacific". China and Russia have carried out annual drills for several years, with the "Joint Sea" exercises beginning in 2012. Last year's drills were held along China's southern coast. The Chinese defence ministry said Friday that this year's exercises were aimed at "further deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership" of the two countries. China has never denounced Russia's more than three-year war nor called for it to withdraw its troops, and many of Ukraine's allies, including the United States, believe that Beijing has provided support to Moscow. China insists it is a neutral party, regularly calling for an end to the fighting while also accusing Western countries of prolonging the conflict by arming Ukraine. AFP

Pakistan, Iran set $10b trade target

Photo: Express Listen to article Pakistan and Iran agreed to increase their bilateral trade from current $3 billion to $10 billion in the talks between the visiting Iranian president and the prime minister here on Sunday, in a move suggesting the shifting geostrategic dynamics bringing the two neighbours closer. Iranian President Massud Pezeshkian travelled to Pakistan on his first official visit since assuming the office and following the 12-day war between Iran and Israel in June. Pakistan rolled out red-carpet welcome to President Pezeshkian and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif personally received him at the Nur Khan Airbase in Rawalpindi, in a rare gesture signalling not just a protocol but Pakistan's intent to deepen ties with the neighbouring country. The timing of the visit was no coincidence as it came at a time when the Israel-Iran conflict remained fresh, Gaza under siege and a host of other regional developments. Pakistan's move to host the Iranian president at a time when the US is seeking its further isolation shows its pursuit of following the independent foreign policy. The formal talks were held at the Prime Minister House with focus on multiple issues ranging from bilateral ties to the current regional and international developments. According to the PM office, the two leaders held a one-on-one meeting, which was followed by delegation-level talks. The Pakistani side included Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar, Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, senior cabinet members, and top government officials. Prime Minister Shehbaz emphasised the importance of the longstanding brotherly relations between Pakistan and Iran, reaffirming Pakistan's full solidarity with the Iranian leadership, armed forces, and the people. Speaking at a joint news conference with President Pezeshkian, the prime minister expressed condolences over the martyrdom of Iranian soldiers, scientists, and civilians during the 12-day war triggered by Israeli aggression, and prayed for the swift recovery of the injured. He also thanked Iran for its unwavering support to Pakistan during the recent flare-up of tensions with India. Morever, the prime minister backed Iran's right to pursue nuclear programme for peaceful purposes. President Pezeshkian, in turn, thanked the Pakistani government and people for standing firmly with Iran during the war. He said the Iranian nation would always remember Pakistan's show of solidarity. Highlighting the need for strengthening economic cooperation, Prime Minister Shehbaz called for the early convening of the 22nd session of the Pakistan-Iran Joint Economic Commission, expected to be held soon. He stressed enhanced collaboration in trade, connectivity, culture, and people-to-people exchanges. The two leaders also witnessed the signing of several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) and agreements across sectors of mutual interest aimed at reinforcing bilateral cooperation. They discussed key initiatives to boost trade, including enhancing quotas for rice, fruits, and meat exports, activating border markets, removing non-tariff barriers, and promoting barter trade. Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the recent progress in Pakistan-Iran trade negotiations and reaffirmed their commitment to increase bilateral trade volume from the current $3 billion to $10 billion in the near future. Regional and global issues were also on the agenda. Prime Minister Shehbaz thanked the Iranian leadership for its strong and vocal support for the Palestinian cause in the face of Israeli brutality. He reiterated Pakistan's unwavering backing for an independent Palestinian state in accordance with UN resolutions and called for an immediate end to Israeli atrocities in Gaza along with urgent humanitarian assistance for the besieged population. Both leaders urged the international community to take swift action to resolve the crisis. Prime Minister Sharif also expressed gratitude for Iran's consistent support for the oppressed people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). The meeting concluded with a luncheon hosted in honour of President Pezeshkian and his delegation.
