GSSA 2025: President Jamie Steele looking forward to packed new season featuring nearly 700 players weekly

West Australian01-05-2025

The 2025 Great Southern Soccer Association officially starts this week with the first of the women's premier division games kicking off on Friday and the men's premier league commencing on Saturday.
Five teams will make up the senior men's league competition with Polonia, Bayswater, Rovers, Albany Caledonians and Phoenix to go head-to-head throughout the season.
The senior women's league will be made up of five teams: Albany Caledonians, Denmark, Rovers, Sharks and Phoenix.
The 2025 season will have nearly 700 players across 40 teams play in the expanding sport until it wraps up in September.
GSSA president Jamie Steele said the competition is only going to get 'bigger and bigger' with people showing an increasing interest in the sport.
'There are a number of new people, especially women, to the game, and also a number of returning masters players are coming back to kick the ball,' he said.
'The on-going indoor soccer league will be happening alongside our normal outdoor league — it's a great opportunity for people new to the game to come have a look and get involved, which is held at the new Albany Indoor Sport Centre on Cockburn Road.'
He said the season would also include Sunday masters games for over-40s players.
Steele said a number of the highlights of the season will include 'local rivalries' and 'blockbuster games' throughout the year.
'The introduction of the new women's development league is a reflection of how many women are wanting to play,' he said.
'We are also introducing our masters games on Sundays which is a focus for us this year as well as the indoor centre and our representative sides that will play some exhibition matches against some top Perth teams.'
Steel, who has sat on the GSSA board for more than seven years and held the role of president for three, said a highlight over the years has been the growth of the association and the game within the Great Southern community.
'The highlights have been seeing the association grow and to create positive relationships with governing bodies within our game, including our city who backed us and Perth Glory to bring the A-League match to Centennial Park last year,' he said.
'The new indoor centre has been a great asset to our sport and others — we worked solidly for over a year to make it happen alongside Cricket Great Southern, the City of Albany and the Albany Agricultural Society.'
He said the GSSA executive team had worked to make the game inviting, sustainable and exciting for players.
'I'm looking forward to the introduction of the senior country week and to see our best players represent the region in Perth, and lastly to see and work with our amazing volunteers that week-in week-out do so much for our sport,' he said.

GNWFL round five wrap: Brigades and Rovers headline round five in a three-point thriller

Brigades edged out Rovers in a three-point thriller, chalking up back-to-back GNWFL wins as the headline match of round five at Greenough Oval on Saturday. The tight contest went down to the wire with the Hawks winning 4.7 (31) to the Demons 4.4 (28). Maddy Graham starred for the Hawks with three goals while Liberty Graham was named best on ground with one goal to her name in the Brigades' win. Rovers' Davina Whitney was judged best while her teammates Ella Ricetti, Dainira Papertalk, Mia Allen and Sharntay Westberg were also prominent. Brigades got off to a flyer in their first quarter with two goals from Graham, getting the Hawks out to a quick lead while Rovers managed only one behind by quarter time. The Dees were quick to the contest in the first quarter with Westberg booting a major, setting the tone for Rovers getting their day up and running. Rovers managed another early goal in the second term before Brigades snatched two goals of their own. Brigades went goalless for the rest of the game, failing to convert in front of the big sticks. Rovers managed to land a major midway through the third quarter, finding themselves down by nine points entering the final term. Another goal by Rovers in the fourth quarter saw them come within three points of the visitors but the Hawks were able to hold off the fighting Dees as Brigades claimed a narrow victory in a low-scoring affair at Greenough Oval. Rovers now gear up to face Towns in round six while Brigades shift their focus to their upcoming game against Chapman Valley at Mazzuchelli Oval this weekend. The other game in round five of the GNWFL was between Towns and Railways, which saw the undefeated Bulldogs come away with a big win. Towns' best on was awarded to Breeanna Hamlett while teammates Emily McAuley, Aaliyah Jones, Jessica Giudice-Nairn and Olivia Bidwell also impressed in the win. Holly Banes, Charli Bidwell and Jessica Giudice-Nairn all bagged two goals each at the Rec in what was a day to remember for the Bulldogs. Jasmine Johansen was named best on ground for Railways in the Blues' loss with valiant efforts coming from Abby Green, Hanna Dethlefsen, Grace Freeman and Glenys Butler. Final score was Towns 8.12 (60) to Railways 2.0 (12). Railways now face Northampton in Kalbarri this weekend while Towns play Rovers at Greenough Oval in round six.

GNFL round five wrap: Railways thump Towns at home as the Blues march on

Railways steamrolled Towns by 68 points at the Rec on Saturday in the GNFL game of the round five. Seth Farmer and Chris Scott had days out for the Blues with four goals and three goals respectively. Matt Kimberly once again impressed in midfield under ruck Flynn Dillon. Meanwhile, Zane Marwick was among Towns' best, working out of the middle in what was a tough day for the Bulldogs. Towns got out to a fast start with the hopes of bouncing back after last week's shock loss at home against Mullewa. However, it didn't take long for the Blues to respond with their vocal home crowd behind them as the midfield group of the Blues got to work with repeat inside-50s. In the second quarter, the Blues started to run away with it. Towns' defenders were under the pump as Railways' forwards got to work. Towns only managed to escape their defensive 50 on a few occasions. Railways booted five goals in the quarter while Marwick added one major to the Dogs' total. The teams headed to the shed at half-time with the scoreboard reading Railways 6.4 (40) to Towns 2.0 (12). Another five-goal quarter in the third sealed it for Railways but Towns weren't without a fight, kicking three goals of their own in an attempt to get back into the game. Towns only managed two behinds in the fourth quarter as Railways buried the game with a four-goal term. The final score was 15.12 (102) to the Blues and 5.4 (34) to the Bulldogs. Railways will face Northampton in Kalbarri in round six this weekend while Towns will take on Rovers at Greenough Oval. Brigades had 11 individual goalscorers in their 150-point victory against Rovers at Greenough Oval. Alby Dean shone with six goals while Dylan Ralph and Hassan Ahmat-Watkins booted four goals and three goals respectively. The final score was Brigades 25.15 (165) to Rovers 2.3 (15). Rovers will now shift their focus to their game against Towns at Greenough in round six while Brigades will face Chapman Valley at Mazzuchelli Oval. At the time of publication, no results were available for Northampton and Mullewa. AROUND THE GROUNDS COLTS Rovers def. by Brigades 0.1 (1) to 21.11 (137) Railways def. ‘Extremely hurtful': WNBA player hits back at cheating allegations

Former Mercury forward Sophie Cunningham has denied allegations that she had an affair with Josh Bartelstein, the married CEO of the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury, which was mentioned in a lawsuit filed in May by Gene Traylor, the director of security for the Suns. The 28-year-old Cunningham, who was traded to the Indiana Fever in January, explained that she does not know Traylor and called the allegations 'untrue and extremely hurtful' in a statement posted to her social media, the NY Post reports. 'I am deeply saddened by the recent false accusation made against me by Gene Traylor, someone I do not know and have never met,' Cunningham said. 'Let me be clear his statements are untrue and extremely hurtful. 'I am here to compete, play basketball at the highest level and win for my team and my fans, while inspiring other women that they can do or be anything they ever dream of becoming. I hold myself to the highest integrity and my values are what guide me on and off the court. 'To the media who reported on this, I have always spoken the truth and been transparent with any press inquiry. In this instance it feels irresponsible that I was never asked for comment about the accusation before several clickbait stories went to print. 'I will not let untrue gossip take my focus away from what is most important to me which is basketball, my supportive team and my fans.' Cunningham played for the Mercury from 2019 until 2024. The franchise drafted her in the second round of the 2019 WNBA Draft. Traylor alleges in his lawsuit that Cornelius Craig, the Suns' vice president of security and risk management, claimed Bartelstein was engaged in an affair with Cunningham. Bartelstein, 35, who has yet to address the allegations, has been married to his wife, Sydney, for two years as of November 2024, according to Phoenix Mag. Traylor's lawsuit, first reported by ESPN, alleges discrimination, harassment and retaliation by the team. Traylor alleges in the lawsuit that the Suns hired Craig to get rid of him. The lawsuit claims the team demoted Traylor from his role as director of safety, security and risk management after he gave a presentation to management highlighting multiple incidents around the Suns and Mercury in 2023. Traylor also alleges the orgazniation discouraged him from taking protected leave after he was diagnosed with cancer. The Suns have denied Traylor's accusations. 'The recent reports concerning Josh Bartelstein and Sophie Cunningham are entirely false and morally reprehensible,' Suns senior vice president of communications Stacey Mitch said. Traylor is seeking undisclosed damages. 'We have seen the civil complaint filed Tuesday and will let the legal process take its course,' NBA spokesman Mike Bass told ESPN.
