Bengaluru Chinnaswamy stampede: KSCA top officials resign, take moral responsibility for 11 deaths

Following the tragic stampede at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium, which resulted in 11 deaths, KSCA Secretary A Shankar and Treasurer A E Jairam have resigned.
BENGALURU: Days after the horrific stampede at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium that left 11 people dead and 75 injured, two senior office-bearers of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) have stepped down, taking moral responsibility for the incident.
KSCA Secretary A Shankar and Treasurer A E Jairam tendered their resignations late Friday night. On Saturday morning, they issued a joint press statement confirming their decision.
'Due to the unforeseen and unfortunate events that have unfolded in the last two days, and though our role was very limited, we are taking moral responsibility. We have submitted our resignations from our respective posts as Secretary and Treasurer of KSCA,' the statement read.
Both Shankar and Jairam are well-known auditors in Bengaluru and have held honorary positions within KSCA for several years. Their resignations come amid growing public anger and mounting pressure from various quarters demanding accountability from the cricketing body.
An FIR was filed against the two along with other KSCA officials following the Wednesday evening tragedy, which occurred during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory celebrations.

A massive crowd had gathered both inside and outside the stadium, leading to a stampede that turned fatal. Chief minister Siddaramaiah had ordered the arrest of KSCA officials responsible for the incident.
With the police beginning the search, the duo on Friday approached the High Court seeking anticipatory bail. The petition, which also named KSCA President Raghuram Bhat, argued that the association and its office-bearers were not directly liable for the incident.
'There is no wrong that can be attributed to the committee or its office-bearers, as they stand aloof of any liabilities in connection with the unfortunate incident,' the plea stated.
While the court granted interim protection from arrest, the resignations of Shankar and Jairam are being seen as a symbolic acceptance of moral responsibility, even as investigations continue into lapses in crowd management and event planning.

Bengaluru stampede: How further disaster was thwarted on top tiers of Chinnaswamy Stadium

1 2 Bengaluru: While pain, anguish and trauma unfolded outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium Wednesday, a potential disaster was averted by the skin of the teeth inside the stadium — thanks to the swift response of alert private security personnel and police officers. By 5pm on that fateful day, as it became clear certain stands, particularly Stand 13, were overcrowded, D Bhaskar, the managing director of Supreme Care Services, a private security agency deployed by event partner DNA, could sense trouble. "Stand 13 looked dangerous. People were jumping from the upper tier to the lower level to get a better view," Bhaskar recalled. "Some even used pillars and fences to climb down. It was a crowd unlike what we usually see during IPL matches — much more aggressive and unruly." Bhaskar, drawing on his army training and two years' experience of handling RCB match security, read the situation fast enough to realise it was spiralling out of control. "Several stands were operating at over 120% capacity. Those spectators who stood up were blocking the views of those behind, which led to pushing and jostling," he said. "I feared people could fall off the upper stands straight to the ground." Bhaskar immediately approached a senior police officer at the venue. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Obtén audífonos premium sin pagar absolutamente nada Top Audifonos Undo "I must thank him — he acted without any delay. Five police officers from the VIP area were immediately told to control the situation on the upper stands. They moved to the upper tiers and cleared out those threatening to act dangerously," Bhaskar said. "We told the crowd that they were under surveillance and strict action would be taken against any unruly conduct, which instilled some fear and helped calm the situation."

KSCA officials quit hours after HC shield from arrest

Karnataka State Cricket Association's (KSCA) secretary A Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam have resigned from their posts, owing moral responsibility for the tragic stampede at Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium here on Wednesday, hours after the Karnataka High Court granted them protection from police arrests. In a letter to KSCA president Raghuram Bhat, they said they wished to own moral responsibility though their role was very limited. The stampede and congestion near the stadium led to the death of 11 cricket fans and injuries to scores of others. The resignations followed the state government launching a crackdown on the agencies involved in organising the felicitation events at the Chinnaswamy stadium after Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won the Indian Premier League (IPL) title for the first time. On Thursday, chief minister Siddaramaiah ordered the arrest of senior executives of RCB, KSCA and event manager DNA Entertainment Network. Shankar and Jairam, along with Bhat, moved the High Court on Friday after the police charged the three organisations with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and other sections under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. In their petition, the KSCA office bearers said the association was only a governing body of cricket in Karnataka with affiliation to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It has nothing to do with IPL events and Wednesday's celebrations were organized by RCB franchise and managed by its vendor DNA Entertainment Network, they argued. KSCA's role was limited to making the stadium and its infrastructure available to RCB and DNA. The police, the petitioners alleged, registered the FIR against them under intense pressure and compelling circumstances without any preliminary enquiry.

Man kills teen on Eid to ‘avenge son'

Roorkee: Eid celebrations turned into mourning for a family in Manglaur area near Roorkee after their 17-year-old son was brutally murdered by their 40-year-old neighbour on Saturday morning. The accused, a daily wager from Pathanpura locality, slit the boy's throat when the victim was returning home after offering prayers "to settle a personal score", police said on Saturday. Officials said that Riyasat Ahmed's son and the victim, Sahil Ahmed Malik, were friends and both studied in Class 9. On last year's Eid, they went to bathe in the Gangnahar canal when the accused's son was swept away by strong current. His body was recovered three days later from a nearby barrage. Since then, Riyasat believed that Sahil had intentionally pushed his son into the canal, causing his death. "The accused told us he deliberately chose the festive day to carry out the crime as his own son was killed by Sahil on the same day last year. We are probing the case from every possible angle," said SP (Rural) SC Suyal.
