Record Breakers icon Cheryl Baker, 71, addresses the show's comeback after 24 years off air - as she takes swipe at 'ageist' TV industry
Cheryl Baker has weighed in after it was revealed children's TV show Record Breakers is making a comeback after 24 years.
Cheryl, 71, previously hosted the show for 10 years alongside Roy Castle, between 1987 and 1997, and has said she would love to feature in the reboot.
The singer - who won Eurovision with her group Bucks Fizz in 1981 - took a swipe at how the TV industry is 'ageist' because she doesn't think she will be asked to return.
Cheryl told The Sun: 'If they wanted someone to be, not necessarily a presenter, because there's always somebody younger than me. It's a very ageist industry in television.
'But it would be nice if they had me as a roving reporter or something like that. So that would be nice but no one's spoken about it so I doubt it's going to happen.'
It's thought that Holly Willoughby 's husband, TV producer Dan Baldwin, is behind the reboot.
It now has the title World Record Breakers: The Rivals, but Cheryl says the show 'needs to be jazzed up,' and 'needs to be more exciting than it was.'
The TV star also confessed that it's still difficult for mature women to land a mainstream gig on the telly.
Cheryl says there's a lot of people out there like herself with 'an awful lot of experience they don't get the opportunity anymore.'
She added it 'would be nice if it's changing to include all ages and all nationalities.'
It comes after the Eurovision winner claimed that the contest has become 'too sexual' and is no longer suitable viewing for children.
Cheryl complained the contest has 'gone too far' in recent years, with 'body parts all over the place'.
The singer became famous for her risqué skirt ripping routine during the band's winning performance of Making Your Mind Up.
But Cheryl insists the song contest is now too 'extreme' and that this year's UK entry, Olly Alexander, failed to impress because his performance was 'suggestive'.
Eurovision winner Cheryl has claimed that the contest has become 'too sexual' and is no longer suitable viewing for children (Olly Alexander for the UK this year)
Olly, 33, performed his raunchy track Dizzy in a neon-lit bathroom surrounded by shirtless male dancers, dancing provocatively in red shorts and leather cod-pieces.
Cheryl has argued the reason the public didn't vote for Olly was due to the 'suggestive' nature to his performance.
She said: 'If I had to put my finger on why the public didn't like Olly Alexander's routine and why he got 'nul points' in the public vote, it would be because it was quite suggestive - which is in keeping with Eurovision becoming very sexual and extreme in recent years.'
She complained: 'There are body parts all over the place in many of the acts. I think it's gone a bridge too far and everybody needs to address that next year.
'Friends of mine, who are very well respected in the music industry, said they couldn't let their grandchildren watch it because it was too sexual and I take their point.
'I think it's gone too far. Would I have let my children watch it when they were young? Probably not.'
Olly ended up in 18th place out of the 25 acts in the grand final in Malmo, Sweden, a far cry from 2022 UK entrant Sam Ryder, who finished runner-up to Ukraine with his hit song Spaceman.

Love Islander's secret connection to former star revealed
LOVE Island newbie Dejon Noel Williams is getting ready to start his villa adventure – and thankfully he has a famous pal who may have been able to provide him some tips. The 26-year-old personal trainer from London was one of the first stars to be announced today for this year's Love Island, heading off to Mallorca in the hopes of finding some romance. 6 6 6 But before the show kicks off next Monday, The Sun can reveal that he already has a connection to a successful past contestant. Dejon's father, Gifton Noel-Williams, at one point was a professional footballer signed to Watford from 1996 to 2003. During this time, Gifton was teammates with Micah Hyde, the father of Love Island 2023 finalist, Tyrique. Tyrique found love in the villa with Ella Thomas, eventually placing third and staying with Ella for a year before their split. Gifton and Micah played alongside each other throughout their respective time at Watford, being shown as solid pals on the pitch. Tyrique and Dejon are also the same age and have played football like their dads. As childhood friends, Dejon now trains Tyrique, with the pair sharing gym videos together on Instagram. Dejon is open about his famous dad, saying ahead of entering the villa: "I've met all kinds of famous people through him. "When I was younger it was weird because he was just my dad, but we'd go to a game and fans were asking for photos. " He says he's looking for a girl in the villa who "is beautiful on the inside and out, looks after themselves and is healthy". Ten Years of Love Island Maya Jama will be back to welcome the new gang into the villa for the ultimate summer of love. The Sun revealed exclusive photos of the new-look Majorcan villa, which promises to deliver some of the show's biggest twists yet. Dejon is not the only islander with a famous connection, with fellow star Tommy Bradley revealing he has a famous boxing brother, Jamie, who trained with Anthony Joshua. Love Island starts Monday at 9pm on ITV, ITV2 and ITVX. 6 6 6

Who is Kyle Ashman? Love Island star sensationally axed over machete arrest
LOVE Island star Kyle Ashman was sensationally axed from the show last night over a machete attack. ITV chiefs scrapped the 23-year-old from the line up, plunging the show into chaos ahead of Monday's launch. 3 3 Eyebrows were raised after the cast member was removed from the show at the final hour. Unlike most of Love Island's line-ups, Kyle wasn't going into the villa with a social media packed with model shots. He has just one snap online, showing off his rippling six-pack as he poses on a rooftop. The mysterious 23-year-old water operative, from Stafford, previously described his flirting style as traditional and laid-back. He said: "I just go with it, find something to compliment a girl on and go from there." The chopped contestant said he was looking for "someone that's fun, confident and just themselves". Not much else is known about Kyle's private life. His flight back home from Majorca came after masked thugs stormed a wake in Stafford and hacked at a dad with a blade in February. Ashman, 23, was one of two quizzed but released with no further action. Sources said the channel was unaware of the incident and he was not flagged as part of contestant checks. The victim, 38, nearly lost his arm. He was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment and kept in for around two weeks. Another mourner was glassed, one struck with a metal pole, and two people run over by a car during 15 minutes of terror at a social club in Stafford. Ashman, who lives in the town, was one of two men to be nicked on suspicion of affray and bailed. Police confirmed yesterday that after the matter had been investigated the pair were released with no further action only last month. A source said: 'This was a horrific attack which could have been even worse. 'Ashman may have signed up to one of the biggest shows on TV with this hanging over his head.' It is not suggested that Ashman, whose job involves laying and repairing water pipes, was involved in the attack. Last night he insisted he was not a violent person. Confirming his show exit, an ITV spokesman said: 'For personal reasons, Kyle will not be entering the Love Island Villa as planned.' The mass brawl broke out at The White Eagle Club on February 28. Sources said three balaclava-clad thugs armed with machetes and metal poles stormed the venue and attacked the dad over an alleged £3,000 debt. They attacked him with a blade and left him with a deep gash on his arm — with witnesses wrapping towels over it to stem the bleed. Pals say he has suffered tendon damage and is unable to drive due to his injuries. Witnesses said the mob made off in a white Vauxhall Astra waiting outside. Around 70 mourners, some elderly and some children, had gathered to pay their respects to local Stanley Reid. Our source continued: 'This seemed to be a targeted attack — they knew who they were looking for and where he was. "People wrapped a towel around the man's injury while waiting for emergency services. "Children were taken into a room and locked in there to keep them away from the violence. 'People were screaming and crying in fear. They had gathered to pay final farewells to a man who was really well-respected within the local community. 'They could have killed someone that night. They are nothing but scumbags. They ruined what was a lovely send-off for a good person.' Staffordshire Police said yesterday: 'We were called to a social club on Riverway, Stafford, at 7.40pm on Friday, February 28 following reports that someone had been glassed outside and a fight was taking place. Some of the men involved were wearing masks and were carrying weapons. 'Two men went to hospital after suffering injuries at the scene. Both have since been discharged. 'A man and a woman suffered minor injuries at the scene but did not want any medical treatment. 'Officers have reviewed CCTV footage and have been actively carrying out enquiries to find out more about what happened. 'A 22-year-old man, from Stafford, was arrested on suspicion of wounding and affray. "Another man, also 22 and from Stafford, was arrested on suspicion of affray. 'Both were questioned in custody and bailed with conditions while our enquiries continue.' A force spokeswoman later confirmed that both suspects had been released with no further action last month. Ashman said last night: 'I fully co-operated with this police investigation and made it very clear that I had no involvement in this incident. 'I am not a violent person and any suggestion otherwise is a mischaracterisation.' A show source said: 'ITV were entirely unaware of Kyle's past and, as he was not charged, it was not flagged as part of Love Island's stringent DBS checks. 'It's only right he can now return home to the UK to share his side of the story and therefore bosses took the decision that it was best for him not to enter the villa.' Love Island host Maya Jama will kick off the brand new series on Monday, June 9. 3

Carlos Alcaraz on ‘perfect' French Open match: ‘I could close my eyes and everything went in'
Carlos Alcaraz described how it felt to play the 'perfect' tennis match by saying: 'I could close my eyes and everything went in'. Alcaraz defeated Tommy Paul 6-0 6-1 6-4 in just 93 minutes to return to the French Open semi-finals for the third year in a row. The defending champion will face Lorenzo Musetti in the semi-finals on Friday after blasting Paul, the 12th seed, off the court in a one-sided night session match. Almost half of the total points won by Alcaraz were winners, with the Spaniard hitting 40 across the straight-sets win in what was his best display of the tournament so far. He was interviewed by three-time French Open champion Mats Wilander, who asked Alcaraz how it felt to play the 'perfect' match at Roland Garros. 'I could close my eyes and everything went in. My feeling today was unbelievable,' Alcaraz told the crowd. 'I was trying to hit every shot 100 per cent. I was trying to hit everything forward. Today was a day where everything went in. It was unbelievable.' Alcaraz apologised to the night session crowd for denying them a longer contest and explained that he felt focused from the start because he knew Paul was a tough opponent. 'I have to say: I know you wanted to watch more tennis, I'm sorry about it!' Alcaraz told the crowd. 'I had to do my work.' Alcaraz had dropped at least a set in three of his four matches coming into the quarter-final against Paul, who he played at Wimbledon and the Olympics last year. The 22-year-old did not let his levels drop as he set up another clash with Musetti after meeting in the Monte Carlo final and Rome semi-finals this season. Alcaraz won both meetings. 'We were in the quarter-finals of Roland Garros, these matches are never easy,' Alcaraz said. I played against Tommy many times and every match was really difficult - he beat my twice. 'That helped me in the beginning of the match to help me focus on my game. Tommy is an unbelievable player and that helped me today.'
