
New SQA chief executive outlines pledges for first 100 days
Nick Page was announced as the chief executive of the body last month following the resignation of Fiona Robertson earlier this year.
The SQA will scrapped in December and replaced with a new body called Qualifications Scotland, which Mr Page will also lead.
Launching his leadership on Monday, the former teacher committed to a number of pledges for his first 100 days as leader, and the final days of the SQA.
He said his promises mark the start of a 'new era of collaboration, transparency, and opportunity'.

Mr Page said: 'The Education (Scotland) Bill has given us real momentum and a clear sense of direction. Learners and educators want to know how change will happen and how it will make a positive difference for them.
'That's why we are setting out these key actions for the next 100 days – so people can see and feel the progress we are making, both in the way we work and in the outcomes we deliver.'
Among his key pledges is a promise to launch the new Schools Unit to bring organisations closer to the classroom and improve support for teachers and pupils.
Mr Page has committed to building new partnerships with industry, employers and the third sector to ensure skills-based qualifications are fit for the future.
He has promised to accelerate the transformation of the SQA to ensure the new body is ready from day one.
The chief executive said he will also expand the 'Your Voice' campaign to under-represented groups, including industry, the third sector and political stakeholders to ensure the success of Qualifications Scotland.
And he committed to supporting the development of new statutory committees and charters to deliver the Education (Scotland) Bill – the legislation which abolished the SQA.
He has also promised to share progress of the SQA's digital transformation, which aims to streamline the body and make it fit for the future.
Mr Page said discussions during the Education (Scotland) Bill process revealed confusion about the full scope of SQA's work, including accreditation, awarding, quality assurance and regulation.
'We've heard the concerns, and we're acting on them,' he said. 'Over the next 100 days, we'll work hard to raise awareness and understanding of what we deliver and the value that brings.
'That includes making it clear how our independent functions operate, how we deliver and measure performance, and explaining the strengthened independence and governance of accreditation.'
He added: 'Together, we can ensure that Qualifications Scotland is a model of inclusion, transparency, and accountability.
'The success of these key actions – and all the positive change we strive for – depends entirely on the skills, dedication, and professionalism of our people, working in partnership across the education and skills community.
'On my first day as chief executive, I want to thank every member of every team for their ongoing commitment.
'It is their expertise and experience that will give learners, educators, and the public confidence in the work we do now and in the future of qualifications in Scotland.'

Kate Forbes ban venue forced into a humiliating U-turn after public funds threat
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe venue at the centre of the Kate Forbes cancel culture row has performed a dramatic U-turn after threats to its public funding. Summerhall Arts, which was recently awarded £608,000 in grants, climbed down over an apparent ban on deputy First Minister because of her gender critical views. Bosses had claimed her appearance last week in a political talk was an 'oversight' and gave a 'guarantee' it wouldn't happen again. But after their statement was condemned by senior SNP figures, including ex First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, the charity chiefs said no politician would be banned after all. Chief executive Sam Gough told the Mail: 'No one is banned from appearing on the stages. Summerhall is a collection of things in this building, including stages and venues. We have not banned anyone.' Mr Gough's uncaveated comments went further than a statement issued earlier in the day by the organisation, which put a pre-condition on future appearances. It said there would be no ban on anyone 'assuming they adhere to our zero tolerance regarding discrimination'. The damage limitation exercise followed an outcry over censorship with both the Government and arts quango Creative Scotland appearing to wash their hands of it. Ministers said they had no role in 'individual funding decisions', while Creative Scotland, which gave Summerhall £608,302 in January, claimed it had no part in 'programming decisions'. The Scottish Conservatives said both were missing the point - that taxpayers' cash was supporting an organisation that appeared to be breaking the law by stifling free speech. A condition of Summerhall's state funding that it must 'comply with all applicable laws'. Ms Forbes, a devout Christian who opposed the SNP's botched gender self-ID reforms, spoke at the venue last week. Summerhall apologised to performers just hours ahead of her appearance as it was concerned about 'the safety and wellbeing of LGBTQ+ artists, staff and audiences by attracting those who share her 'views' and said 'we have work to do to repair the damage'. They even provided a 'designated relaxed space' or 'safe room' said to be 'terrified' of the 5ft 2in Skye MSP. The row coincided with controversies over gender critical authors being excluded from the state-backed Edinburgh Book Festival and a best-selling book of gender critical essays, The Women Who Wouldn't Wheest, being pulled from a National Library of Scotland exhibition. Finance Secretary Shona Robison called Summerhall's reaction 'unwise and unnecessary', while Ms Sturgeon said she didn't agree with cancel culture or the venue's actions. The Scottish Tories demanded Summerhall's public funding be cut for potentially discriminating against people because of their beliefs. In 2023, the Stand comedy club had to back down after trying to cancel a Fringe show by then SNP MP Joanna Cherry KC because of her gender critical views, admitting its original decision was 'unfair and constituted unlawful discrimination'. Last year Creative Scotland axed £84,555 of public funding from the live arts project Rein after a plan to include real sex acts was deemed a breach of contract. Bowing to pressure yesterday, the venue said 'no-one is banned from the Summerhall building or by Summerhall Arts' and it would 'not be banning politicians or anyone else'. It was a marked departure from its message to artists eight days earlier, which an insider downplayed as merely an 'email to performers', not an official statement. Scottish Tory equalities spokeswoman Tess White said there had been too much 'craven buck-passing' by the Government and Creative Scotland. She said: 'This latest clear-as-mud statement from Summerhall just underlines the need for SNP ministers to step in and order the venue to get its act together. 'Summerhall's shameful decision to suppress free speech didn't occur in a vacuum. 'For years the SNP have been pushing their reckless and unlawful self-ID policy on Scotland's public bodies and pandering to gender extremists. 'As a result, organisations funded by taxpayers think it's okay to silence those who have the moral courage and legal vindication to stand up for women's rights. It's totally unacceptable. 'John Swinney and Creative Scotland, which has form for financing dodgy projects, should remove funding from any group or venue that blocks legitimate free speech.' It emerged yesterday that Summerhall Arts had known since April that Ms Forbes would appear in an event run by the Herald newspaper but did not object. Just 48 hours before the event, managers raised fears about 'hate speech'. SNP Culture Secretary Angus Roberson yesterday told the Herald he was 'a strong supporter of the freedom of speech and of expression at our festivals'. He said: 'It will not be easy all of the time to please everybody. 'But I think keeping an eye on the principle of freedom of expression and the expression of different views is an established and important part of our national life.' Mr Robertson is the MSP for Edinburgh Central, which is home to many cultural organisations, and he said he does not make decisions about their funding to avoid conflicts of interest. He has specifically 'recused himself from decisions in relation to Summerhall', which are taken by employment minister Richard Lochhead instead. A Creative Scotland spokesman said: 'Creative Scotland does not play a role in the programming decisions of funded organisations.' A Scottish Government spokesman said: 'Creative Scotland is an arms-length funding body and Ministers have no role in individual funding decisions.'

Ministers aim to export London's academic success to England's struggling schools
Ministers plan to turbocharge their school improvement programme to tackle regional inequalities, aiming to export the success of London's high-achieving pupils to England's most struggling schools. Bridget Phillipson, the education secretary, said her school improvement plan was 'taking the best' of the previous Labour government's successful London Challenge, which revolutionised the city's school system, and applying the techniques to flagging schools throughout England. This week's A-level results raised alarm at the widening gap between results in London and regions outside the south-east of England, particularly in the Midlands and the north-east, where improvements in top grades have been stagnant. The Department for Education is to double the number of schools being supported by its regional improvement for standards and excellence (Rise) programme, which identifies 'stuck schools' with repeated poor inspection reports, and aim to transform them through expert assistance from experienced school leaders and partnerships, as well as up to £200,000 over two years in extra funding. Phillipson said: 'This week's exam results were a time for celebration, but they also laid bare the yawning attainment gaps at A-level that continue to cast a shadow over so many areas of the country. 'It's appalling that young people across the north-east, the East Midlands and West Midlands continue to be held back compared to their peers in London. 'That's why, as part of our plan for change, we are putting a laser focus on those areas of the country, and those schools where performance is weakest, with our new school improvement teams – taking the best of the renowned London Challenge and applying it to areas like the north-east, to make sure that every single child, wherever they grow up, has the life chances they deserve.' The rollout of the Rise programme is backed by the former education secretary David Blunkett and Sir Kevan Collins, the government's school improvement tsar, who were involved in the London Challenge after it was launched in 2003. Lord Blunkett applauded the early intervention in schools through the Rise teams, saying the policy would 'narrow the gap and create a more equal start in life, so crucial to releasing the talent, creativity and self-reliance of young people'. In London, the government used data to identify schools with the most glaring problems, and then worked with local authorities to overhaul each school's leadership and culture, while also working with parents and wider communities to tackle specific issues in boroughs such as Tower Hamlets, where Collins was a senior leader. By 2010, London had a higher proportion of schools rated as good or outstanding by Ofsted than any other area of England. The initial phase of Rise began earlier this year, after 600 schools were identified as urgently needing support. More than 200 were matched with advisers and partners, and must create an approved plan for transformation before receiving up to £200,000 in extra funding spread over two years. The DfE said a further 200 schools would be added 'very quickly' in the autumn, when the new school year commences, as a sign of the government's recognition of the urgency. Collins said: 'The emphasis [of Rise] is all about pace, because the one thing about schools that start to decline, the slide becomes embedded. They can't recruit great staff, people start leaving, attitudes become habitual. You need to be radical to turn that around, and the longer you leave it, the harder it is. This is what is so shameful about these schools being left like this for so long.' He added: 'One of the things about the London Challenge was that it was very high-profile and with a sense of endeavour – everyone was leaning into it, it had massive national leadership. There was a big effort, a clear effort, and that is what we are trying to replicate with Rise.' Jon Coles, the director of the London Challenge when it launched under the leadership of Tim Brighouse, and who is now the chief executive of the United Learning academy trust, said: 'The history of the London Challenge shows that you can make a big difference, that these things are not inevitable. 'Twenty years ago, inner London performed less well than every region in the country. And now the only place that outperforms inner London is outer London. 'So things can change. But it requires people to decide they are going to work together, have a great strategy, take tough decisions, collaborate beyond boundaries, in order to make things better for children.' Thursday's A-level results showed the gap between the best- and worst-performing regions widened again this year, with 32% of entries in London gaining the top A* or A grades, compared with fewer than 23% in north-east England. Young people in the north-east of England are also less likely to take A-levels than their peers in London and the south-east. Research published by the DfE in July showed that more than half of children in inner London eligible for free school meals at the age of 15 went on to higher education by the age of 19, compared with 22% in the north-east and the east Midlands.
