Saudi Minister of Finance stresses energy diversification

Zawya19-06-2025
Minister of Finance Mohammed Aljadaan emphasised that energy security is not a luxury but a fundamental pillar for achieving development and comprehensive growth. He noted that the absence of reliable energy access hampers progress across vital sectors such as healthcare, education, economic productivity, environmental sustainability, water extraction, and food security.
Aljadaan made these remarks during his speech at the Opec Fund for International Development Forum, held in Vienna, Austria, reported SPA.
He extended his appreciation to the Opec Fund for organising the forum, which highlights the critical role of economic reforms in strengthening national resilience, addressing financial and economic challenges, and achieving sustainable and inclusive development.
The minister underscored that economic reforms aimed at achieving prosperity and tackling development challenges must prioritise securing basic needs, chief among them access to energy.
He pointed out that energy poverty affects 1.2 billion people worldwide, with repercussions that transcend borders, including economic instability, rising migration pressures, and growing humanitarian burdens.
Aljadaan affirmed that Saudi Arabia is committed to working collaboratively with the international community to enhance global energy security and eliminate energy poverty while simultaneously advancing efforts to combat climate change. He reiterated the Kingdom's ambitious target of generating 50% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2060, in alignment with the circular carbon economy framework.

Saudi wealth fund PIF's assets under management up 19% in 2024 to $913bn

Assets of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund climbed to $913 billion in 2024, marking a 19 per cent annual rise for the sovereign wealth fund that is key to the kingdom's economic transformation agenda. The fund's annual returns since 2017, however, have fallen to 7.2 per cent, down from 8.7 per cent in 2023, the PIF said in its annual report published on Wednesday. Capital deployment across its priority sectors reached $56.8 billion last year, bringing cumulative investment since the beginning of 2021 to more than $171 billion, the fund said. Total revenue increased by 25 per cent and its cash balance "remains strong and broadly unchanged year on year as PIF maintains its robust liquidity", the report said. The PIF now represents 10 per cent of the nation's non-oil economy, with its cumulative real non-oil GDP contribution between 2021 and 2024 growing to $243 billion. The total number of its portfolio companies at the end of last year had reached 225, of which the PIF created and established 103. 'PIF further established its position as one of the world's largest sovereign wealth funds," said Yasir A AlSalman, the PIF's chief financial officer. "PIF continues to innovate to deliver on its mandate and drive economic transformation.' The PIF is leading Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 initiative, which aims to diversify the kingdom's economy from oil. The PIF, along with related organisations, is driving investment into areas including finance, health care, sport, renewables, technology, the automotive industry, property, aerospace, defence, entertainment, leisure, retail and mining. The fund's domestic holdings include Saudi mining and mineral giant Maaden, petrochemicals major Sabic and the kingdom's biggest lender, Saudi National Bank. It has also launched Riyadh Air – Saudi Arabia's new national carrier – which is set to begin flying this year, the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Company and Lifera, a pharmaceutical investment company. The fund also continues to make key international investments. In December, the PIF and Ardian completed a €4 billion ($4.2 billion) deal to buy a combined 37.62 per cent stake in London's Heathrow Airport from Spanish construction firm Ferrovial and other shareholders of FGP Topco, the parent company of Heathrow Airport Holdings. It has four main sources of funding: capital injections from the government, government asset transfers, retained earnings from investments, and loans and debt instruments. The fund, which received 8 per cent more of Aramco shares from the government last year, has also continued to diversify its funding sources, raising $9.83 billion in public debt and an additional $7 billion in private debt, it said in the report. 'The 2024 results highlight PIF's transition from digital transformation to digital leadership, with artificial intelligence and automation together becoming a vital part of operations," said Maram Al Johani, PIF's acting chief of staff and secretary general to the board. "In 2024, PIF completed 58 digital projects, launched 15 new applications and automated more than 477 processes, enabling insights, strategy and the creation of economic value.' The PIF also raised its target for assets under management by 2030 to $2.67 trillion, up nearly 43 per cent from its original target of $1.87 trillion, the annual report released by the Saudi government's Vision 2030 in April said. The fund has helped create 1.1 million jobs in the kingdom as of 2024, up from 77,700 in 2021, the report found.

Lufthansa to relaunch nonstop flight from Riyadh to Munich

Lufthansa, a German airline, is set to expand its capacity in Saudi Arabia by around 50 per cent with a new connection from Riyadh to Munich, starting on 27 October 2025. This route had previously been part of Lufthansa's schedule until 2017. The modern Lufthansa Airbus A350-900 will operate the new service, accommodating up to 300 passengers every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning. This route will connect Riyadh to Munich, a five-star airport terminal recognised by Skytrax, providing an ideal link to the global Lufthansa network. The new flight to Germany departs from Riyadh every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 6:25 a.m., arriving in Munich at 10:25 a.m. local time. The return flight to Riyadh leaves Munich every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 9:45 p.m. for a night flight to the capital of Saudi Arabia, where it is scheduled to land the next morning at 4:50 a.m. local time at King Khalid International Airport. Sadiq Mohamed, General Manager of Sales for Saudi Arabia at Lufthansa Group Airlines, said: 'Munich is one of the most popular destinations in Western Europe for many of our customers. The airport itself is a relaxing, convenient, and beautiful gateway, whether travellers are connecting onward or visiting the city and its stunning surrounding region, known for its castles and picturesque lakes near the Alps.' Lufthansa currently offers daily flights from Dammam and Riyadh to Frankfurt. ITA Airways offers five weekly flights from Riyadh and three weekly flights from Jeddah to Rome, while Eurowings operates seven times a week from Jeddah to Berlin, Cologne, and Stuttgart this winter. These three Lufthansa Group airlines will provide a total of 25 flights a week to Saudi Arabia, with the airlines of the Lufthansa Group flying to the Middle East region more than 120 times a week. Lufthansa has a long tradition in Saudi Arabia, having operated flights to the Kingdom for 65 years. The demand for flights from Riyadh is steadily growing, and the increased air capacity will facilitate easy access to the heart of the Arabian Peninsula for events like the World Expo 2030 and the FIFA Men's World Cup in 2034, as part of the Saudi Vision 2030 initiative. Munich Airport, one of Lufthansa's two major hubs, opens up around 130 global destinations for Saudi Arabian travellers, particularly to Europe, America, and Asia. GCC asset management soars 9% to $2.2tn as Saudi Arabia, UAE lead

The GCC's asset management industry surged to $2.2tn in Assets under Management (AuM) in 2024, marking a 9 per cent year-on-year increase, according to Boston Consulting Group's (BCG) latest Global Asset Management report. Saudi Arabia and the UAE were the key growth engines in the retail mutual fund sector, while Kuwait and Abu Dhabi's sovereign wealth funds (SWFs) managed the largest asset volumes in the region. Lukasz Rey, Managing Director and Partner and Middle East Head of Financial Institutions at BCG, said: 'The next decade's leaders will be those who redefine their future, not just endure challenges. The region's 9 per cent AuM growth in 2024 underscores its rising prominence as a hub for institutional and retail capital. 'With Saudi Arabia and the UAE anchoring regional momentum, the GCC's strategic diversification and SWF dominance signal a future where local asset managers could rival global giants. 'Recent market volatility offers a chance for change, prompting asset managers to move from recovery to innovation – reimagining value delivery, client engagement, and business operations.' Asset management in UAE and Saudi BCG's findings show that revenue growth in 2024 was driven primarily by market performance rather than fresh inflows, leaving the sector exposed to global volatility. Fee compression, shifting investor preferences, and rapid digital disruption are now pushing firms to overhaul business models, cut costs, and adopt technology-led strategies. The report identifies three forces transforming the global and regional asset management industry: Product innovation and retail access to private assets: Asset managers are targeting new opportunities in active exchange-traded funds (ETFs), model portfolios, and separately managed accounts. A major growth area is retail access to private markets, where semi-liquid private asset funds have grown more than fivefold in four years to over $300bn Consolidation and digital transformation: Mergers, acquisitions, and strategic partnerships are accelerating as firms scale operations and invest in technology. Managers with more than $300bn in AuM are leveraging efficiencies, while smaller players are adopting leaner operating models Cost discipline and AI adoption: Generative AI is being deployed across the front, middle, and back offices, streamlining processes and enabling more efficient management of complex asset classes like alternatives and illiquids Mohammad Khan, Managing Director and Partner at BCG, said: 'The GCC's asset management industry has demonstrated remarkable resilience and strategic growth, achieving $2.2tn in Assets Under Management (AuM) in 2024. 'With Saudi Arabia and the UAE driving retail mutual fund expansion and Kuwait and Abu Dhabi leading in sovereign wealth fund dominance, the region is steadily establishing itself as a global financial powerhouse. 'As highlighted in BCG's research, this growth reflects not only recovery but a strategic pivot towards innovation and operational excellence. 'The next decade will be defined by asset managers who prioritise client-centric transformation, technological advancement, and leaner business models, positioning the GCC as a formidable force capable of rivalling global industry leaders.' Nabil Saadallah, Managing Director and Partner at BCG, said: 'While currency adjustments and methodology revisions cloud historical comparisons, the consistency of 9 per cent annual growth across the region and GCC reveals a resilient market. 'Pension funds and SWFs, led by Saudi and Kuwaiti institutions, are quietly reshaping the region's financial architecture, blending tradition with global asset management rigor. 'Notably, cost discipline is now a strategic focus with firms prioritizing unique value creation, embracing lean practices, and investing heavily in transformative technologies.'
