Lucknow: Noting that frequent elections were a big problem before the country, BJP national general secretary Sunil Bansal on Monday said that in the last 30 years, not a single year passed in India without elections being held.
Bansal was addressing the seminar organised on the topic 'One Nation-One Election' at Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University, Kanpur.
UP BJP chief Bhupendra Chaudhary, UP higher education minister Yogendra Upadhyay, and vice chancellor Prof Vinay Pathak were also present at the seminar.
Motivating the youth and students, Bansal said that whenever there is any new change in the country, students and youth play an important role in it. "If we look at the history of the country and the world, the youth and students have always started the change," he said.

Emphasising the need for 'one nation-one election', the
BJP general secretary
said that democracy cannot last long if there are no fair elections. He mentioned that there were 17 crore 32 lakh voters in the first general election of the country. "But in the election held in 2024, there were more than 96 crore voters," he said.
"Keeping in mind the growing population, the changing world, the aspirations of 140 crore people of the country, many changes have taken place in the country from time to time. It is a matter of happiness that in the sequence of change, the discussion (of one nation-one election) has started again in this country. A new debate has started in the country on whether problems can be solved by conducting all elections simultaneously," he said. Bansal said that the world is changing, so we cannot run with the old system. "According to the changing world and the needs of the country, we also need to change the law," he said, adding that the govt has changed the education system and now it was time to change the election system according to the needs of the country.
"A few years ago, voting was done with ballot paper but now there is EVM. The youth of 18 years got the right to vote. Therefore, change is necessary in accordance with the challenges of the world," he said. A large number of students, youth, and eminent people from the influential class participated in the seminar.

Peter Navarro to India: Act like a US partner or pay the price

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump's trade adviser Peter Navarro on Monday criticised India's crude oil imports from Russia, calling the move "opportunistic" and warning that if India "wants to be treated as a strategic partner of the US, it needs to start acting like one". In an opinion piece in the Financial Times, Navarro alleged that India was "now cosying up to both Russia and China" and argued that New Delhi's Russian crude purchases must stop as they were financing Moscow's war in Ukraine. His comments come ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this month, even as Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi visits New Delhi for talks on the disputed border. "This two-pronged policy will hit India where it hurts-its access to US markets - even as it seeks to cut off the financial lifeline it has extended to Russia's war effort," Navarro wrote. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Crossout 2.0: Supercharged Crossout Play Now Undo He said India's reliance on Russian crude was "opportunistic and deeply corrosive of global efforts to isolate Putin's war economy". The remarks assume significance as US trade negotiators have postponed their planned August 25-29 visit for the sixth round of Bilateral Trade Agreement talks , the first tranche of which is targeted for conclusion by autumn. Live Events Trump has already imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods, including a 25% penal levy for continued purchases of Russian oil, despite the external affairs ministry's assertion that India is being unfairly singled out while the US and EU continue to source energy from Moscow. While the 25% tariff on Indian goods entering the US took effect on August 7, the additional 25%, announced as penalty for crude and defence imports from Russia, will kick in on August 27. "India acts as a global clearing house for Russian oil, converting embargoed crude into high-value exports while giving Moscow the dollars it needs," Navarro wrote, adding that it was risky to transfer cutting-edge US military capabilities to a country "cosying up to both Russia and China".

'Gut-wrenching': Kristi Noem reacts to Indian truck driver Harjinder Singh killing 3 in Florida in accident, blames Newsom

Indian truck driver who illegally entered US in 2018 was arrested for killing 3 people in a road accident in Florida which was caused as he took a wrong U-turn. Department of Homeland Security secretary Kristi Noem said the death of three people in Florida caused by a semi truck's wrong U-turn was a gut-wrenching tragedy which should have never happened. Noem said DHS will work with the US Department of Transportation to ensure that illegal aliens do not get licenses from sanctuary jurisdictions. "3 innocent people were killed in Florida because Gavin Newsom's California DMV issued an illegal alien a Commercial Driver's License. This gut wrenching tragedy should have never happened," Noem posted. "Three innocent people were killed in Florida because Gavin Newsom's California DMV issued an illegal alien a Commercial Driver's License—this state of governance is asinine," DHS said in a statement. "How many more innocent people have to die before Gavin Newsom stops playing games with the safety of the American public? We pray for the victims and their families. Secretary Noem and DHS are working around the clock to protect the public and get these criminal illegal aliens out of America," the statement added. While DHS blamed California for giving a driver's license to the illegal alien, Newsom's office said Singh entered the US in 2018 when Trump was the president. Did Harjinder Singh enter US illegally in 2018? DHS confirmed that Harjinder Singh entered the US illegally through the southern border in 2018 and was arrested within two days. But he said he was scared to go back to India -- a fear that was affirmed by US Citizenship and Immigration Services. At that time, he was released on a $5,000 immigration bond. His immigration proceedings remained pending since then but he managed to get a driver's license in California. California's Assembly Bill 60 (AB 60), enacted in 2015, allows undocumented immigrants to apply for a driver's license if they can provide proof of identity and California residency. These licenses are marked "not for federal identification."

Odisha ready for SIR, may be held in Sept-Oct

Bhubaneswar: Odisha is planning to conduct a special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral roll in Sept-Oct, after a gap of 24 years, authorities said on Monday. "The Election Commission of India (ECI) has already stated that this (SIR) will be conducted in every state. We are prepared, although we have not received any concrete timeline so far," chief electoral officer (CEO) R S Gopalan said while commenting on the state's plan during an informal interacting with the media. "Normally, around Sept-Oct, a summary revision of the voter list is done. The ECI will decide soon whether SIR will be conducted around the same time this year," he said amid an intense political debate over the SIR in Bihar. As part of the SIR, voters will have to fill out an enumeration form, which can be done physically or online, Gopalan said. The SIR involves door-to-door verification of voters and rationalisation of booths. As part of the electoral roll revision, the number of polling booths in Odisha will increase by 7,000 from 38,000 to 45,000, the CEO added. Gopalan said since 90% of voters in Odisha are Aadhaar-linked, there is a very low chance of large-scale discrepancies after the exercise is completed by Jan. As part of preparations for the SIR exercise, chief secretary Manoj Ahuja had last month asked the department concerned and district administrations to ensure various posts related to the exercise, such as district election officer, electoral registration officer (ERO), and assistant EROs, are not vacant. Officers occupying these positions would not be transferred without EC approval. According to the existing voter list, as of Jan 1, Odisha has a total of 3.40 crore voters, including 1.72 crore men, 1.68 crore women and 3,434 other voters. The voters include 15 lakh in the 18-19 age group and 6.7 lakh who are 80 years and above. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
