OWWA to expand OFW Lounge to more airports following positive response
After receiving favorable feedback on the OFW Lounge at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) is set to establish similar lounges at international airports in Clark, Cebu-Mactan, and Davao.
The OFW Lounge at NAIA Terminal 3 was built by the New NAIA Infrastructure Corp. (NNIC) and later turned over to OWWA for management. A separate, smaller OFW Lounge at Terminal 1 was constructed by OWWA, but the NNIC-built facility is more modern and spacious.
Completed in September 2024, the lounge offers comfortable seating, Wi-Fi, charging stations, and power outlets for departing overseas Filipino workers. It also provides complimentary buffet-style meals and has an information desk to assist workers with travel-related inquiries. New hires can also connect with experienced OFWs to gain insights about working abroad.
Beyond expanding the OFW Lounge network, NNIC is deploying eight additional internal shuttle buses operating 24/7 to assist passengers transferring between terminals.
'NAIA is operating well beyond its capacity, and while major infrastructure upgrades are in progress, expanding our shuttle fleet is an invaluable step to ensure accessibility and convenience [of passengers],' said Ramon Ang, president of NNIC and San Miguel Corp. (SMC).
NNIC, led by SMC in partnership with South Korea's Incheon International Airport Corp. (IIAC), took over NAIA's management in September 2024. The consortium has committed P170 billion to modernize the airport, with plans to boost passenger capacity from 43 million to 62 million annually and increase aircraft movements from 42 to 48 per hour while ensuring efficient and safe operations.

There's been a brilliant visa update for Indian tourists travelling to the Philippines
Got the Philippines on your travel list? If you're an Indian national, packing for paradise just got a whole lot simpler. Starting June 8, Indian passport holders can enter the Philippines visa-free for up to 14 days for tourism purposes – no lengthy embassy visits or paperwork required. All you need is a passport valid for six months beyond your stay, proof of accommodation, funds to cover your trip and a return or onward ticket. That's your beach getaway sorted. But it gets even better. According to the same announcement, made by the Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi, if you're an Indian citizen holding a valid visa or residence permit for the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, Singapore or the Schengen area, you can extend your island time to a full 30 days – no visa necessary. Just show your valid passport and return ticket at the border and you're in. The visa-free entry applies at all Philippine ports and while extensions aren't on the table (so don't overstay your welcome), this move is a major step towards smoother travel between India and the archipelago nation. There are a few fine-print notes: the policy is strictly for tourism. If you're transiting through, planning a longer stay, or heading to the Philippines for business, study or work, you'll still need to apply for the relevant visa through the usual consulate channels. Still, for Indian travellers dreaming of white sands, warm seas and unforgettable Filipino hospitality, this is very good news indeed. Need some travel inspo? Gov't issues new rules to speed up delivery of OFW balikbayan boxes
The Philippine government has introduced new regulations aimed at expediting the delivery and improving the security of balikbayan boxes sent by Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). This comes in response to numerous complaints about undelivered, delayed, or missing boxes, and growing concerns over fraudulent freight forwarding services. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Bureau of Customs (BOC), together with other key government agencies, signed a Joint Administrative Order (JAO) on Monday at the DMW Central Office, outlining a coordinated government effort to regulate sea cargo forwarders, protect OFWs from scams, and ensure their packages reach recipients safely and on time. The initiative supports the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to prioritize the needs and welfare of OFWs. The administrative order was developed following investigations and public hearings conducted by the House Committee on Overseas Workers Affairs (HCOWA), which identified regulatory loopholes and a lack of accountability mechanisms that have long plagued balikbayan box shipments. 'This JAO is the product of sustained collaboration and strong legislative oversight,' said DMW Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac. The administrative order establishes a comprehensive framework to monitor and regulate freight forwarding services. It also introduces a multi-agency complaints and tracking system to help OFWs report issues and follow up on the status of their packages. Additionally, a nationwide public information campaign will warn against using unaccredited cargo services and educate OFWs on their rights and available support. Since 2023, the DMW and BOC have helped retrieve and deliver over 9,900 balikbayan boxes. Just last week, 2,500 more boxes were recovered at the Port of Davao and are currently being prepared for free delivery to recipients in Mindanao. To support OFWs affected by unrecovered shipments, the DMW has made ₱30,000 in financial assistance available through its AKSYON Fund. The program now operates under expanded guidelines to speed up aid and include more beneficiaries.
