RIP: Former Springbok captain passes away
Desmond Charles van Jaarsveldt was the oldest living Springbok. He played in one Test, when he captained South Africa against Scotland on 30 April 1960, scoring a try in the 18-10 victory at the erstwhile Boet Erasmus Stadium in Gqeberha.
Born on 31 March 1929 in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, Van Jaarsveldt played for the Springboks from Rhodesia, as the country was known at the time.
Van Jaarsveldt, who made more than 60 provincial appearances for Rhodesia from 1947 to 1962 and captained them in the Currie Cup, remained involved in rugby after hanging up his boots as a coach and administrator, and he was also involved with the South African Rugby Legends Association (SARLA).
'Des will not only be remembered as the oldest living Springbok in the last number of years, but he was a leader with a deep love for the game who leaves behind a wonderful legacy,' said Alexander.
'He will not only be remembered for his achievements on the rugby field, but Des was also an accomplished boxer and athlete, and was devoted to assisting and giving back to sport in his native Zimbabwe.
'On behalf of the South African rugby family, I would like to honour his legacy as a former national captain and someone who ploughed back into our beloved game, and I would like to express our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and loved ones in this very sad and difficult time.'

Pead won the Player of the Tournament award after the Junior Boks beat their New Zealand counterparts in the final to lift the trophy for the first time since 2012. The speedy No 9 scored six tries and assisted four during the tournament. He also surpassed France star Antoine Dupont's record for running metres by a scrumhalf at the tournament, racking up 232m from 15 carries during the pool stages. 'When I met him, I really liked how he sees the game and his hunger to evolve as a player and go to bigger heights,' Paige said, during an event hosted by Generation Schools in Cape Town on Wednesday. Pead is currently in camp with the Springboks ahead of their home Rugby Championship matches against Australia. He and fellow Junior Boks, flank Bathobele Hlekani and outside centre Cheswill Jooste, were invited to see first hand how the Boks prepare for a big tournament. Paige, who played 13 Test matches for the Springboks and played in the 2015 Rugby World Cup, says Pead's involvement in the Bok camp is massive for his development, as he will be able to see first-hand what it takes to play for the Springboks. 'I always say you learn a lot through the ears and the eyes. He is going to learn a lot from people like Grant Williams and Cobus Reinach, what they do on a day-to-day basis, what they do post training, their habits and what type of questions they ask in team meetings,' the former Bulls scrumhalf said. 'I think being there is going to put him and the others ahead of their peers. It's going to be three amazing weeks for them with the Boks. 'He still has a lot to learn and needs to play in big competitions such as the United Rugby Championship to develop his game even more. But we are going to see Haashim Pead in a Springbok jersey sooner rather than later. He has all the capabilities to make it.' Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus just week said Pead and other two Junior Boks have fitted in nicely. While he doesn't foresee them playing any Test matches this year, the Bok mentor is hoping that the exposure will give them the desire and hunger to improve their game and push for a senior call-up. 'The coaches will be involved in the team until 2027, so it's important for us to continue developing our depth and ensuring that we have at least three players to pick from in each position,' Erasmus said. 'We don't see the Young Guns playing Test matches this year, but exposing them to this environment and allowing them to participate in all our boardroom and field sessions is great for them to learn. 'They've fitted in well and they appear to be enjoying it, while it's also good for the more experienced players to see the talent that is coming through the ranks.' The Springboks start their Rugby Championship campaign against the Wallabies at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on August 16. The Boks and Aussies will then travel to Cape Town for their second match a week later on August 23.

TS Galaxy snap up another Kaizer Chiefs youth product!
TS Galaxy FC have struck again by signing another Kaizer Chiefs youth product as the 2025-26 season is about to kick off. On Wednesday, The Rockets announced eight new signings that are expected to bolster their squad in different departments. And headlining the list was none other Ntandoyenkosi Nkosi who captained the Chiefs DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) team. Nkosi would have hoped to be given a chance in the Amakhosi senior team but that did not happen, and TS Galaxy pounced. He reunites with his former teammate at Chiefs, Puso Dithejane, who left the Soweto giants for TS Galaxy last season. The other seven players are Veluyeke Zulu, Sedwyn George, Anslin Williams, Matome Mmolai, Mzwandile Dlamini, Siyabonga Nguessan and Onke Moletshe. Springbok coaches zero in on players after trimming squad for Rugby Champs
'It was a bit tough to get that right with the big squad,' Rassie Erasmus said. Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus said the team's training camp has started well, as they've been able to meet their goal of providing more one-on-one attention to players ahead of the Rugby Championship. Erasmus told the media they had cut the squad size and extended the training camp from one week to two, after finding that the larger group earlier in the year (55 and then 45 players) didn't meet their need for focused work, though it did offer more depth. The 37-man squad started training in Johannesburg on Sunday, and after three sessions by Tuesday afternoon, Erasmus told the media that he was happy with their progress. More time to focus on players 'We just decided after the four games [Barbarians, Italy twice, and Georgia] that giving guys two weeks off before we go full-on Rugby Championship was a bit too long,' the Springbok coach said. 'So this week has basically given us time to go through every single facet of our game and be 100% aligned between players, coaches, strength and conditioning staff, and the medical team. That all the players know exactly what we expect from them, what is happening in the next couple of weeks.' He said the squad was focusing on their conditioning programme ahead of tough matches against 'top tier one' nations. 'When we were 46 or 47 most of the time, you had about 12 guys less at training to swop in and out. We did not cut the squad to drop guys, which a lot of people think. It was just to make sure that some of those guys… have a lot more one-on-one time. 'When Daan [Human] does the scrum and eight props have to swop in and three hookers, the locks…' Springboks get the most out of their training Erasmus said the larger squad provided a large player base who are comfortable in the Springbok setup. They know what is expected of them at international level. Their good scorelines despite having fresh faces, were a positive. And the players will be available going forward. But the Rugby Championship is a big competition with less margin for error. 'We will swop a little bit in and out against Australia in the two Test matches, seeing how much game time we can get into most of the guys. But the positive in this is having guys here and getting a hell of a lot of reps in the attack, in defence, at the breakdown, contesting systems, aerial skills, where it was a bit tough to get that right with the big squad.'
