Phoong, impressed with the top class facility, hopes that more would be introduced in Kota Kinabalu. 'With the view and setting offered at Sutera Harbour, I believe this is the best pickleball courts in Malaysia. 'This new facility will bring excitement and enjoyment to the community. I hope DBKK will consider building more such facilities in the city,' he said. Meanwhile, pickleball player Stefan Walter Sundang Alex who was present said the facility was a much-needed addition to the growing pickleball scene in Sabah. 'Pickleball is still a very new sport here as it was only introduced about two years ago, but the community has been growing steadily. At Sutera Harbour, we are always looking to enhance our offerings for both locals and international guests,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ringgit strengthens against US dollar amid US fiscal concerns

Published on: Monday, June 30, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 30, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: At 8.01 am, the local currency rose to 4.2190/2365 against the greenback, up from Thursday's close of 4.2300/2355. The DXY slipped 0.26 per cent to 97.151 points, reflecting market unease over potential US tax cuts and spending reductions. Kuala Lumpur: The ringgit continued its upward momentum against the US dollar at the opening today, supported by a weaker US Dollar Index (DXY) and growing concerns over US fiscal policies. At 8.01 am, the local currency rose to 4.2190/2365 against the greenback, up from Thursday's close of 4.2300/2355. The DXY slipped 0.26 per cent to 97.151 points, reflecting market unease over potential US tax cuts and spending reductions. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid noted that the US Senate is debating tax cuts, Medicaid spending reductions, and clean energy subsidy cuts. 'The Congressional Budget Office estimates these measures could widen fiscal deficits by US$3.3 trillion from 2025 to 2034, leaving 11.8 million Americans uninsured by 2034,' he told Bernama. The proposed bill, with a deadline of July 4, 2025, could further strain US government creditworthiness, pressuring the dollar. 'We expect the ringgit to remain firm, trading between RM4.22 and RM4.23 against the US dollar,' Mohd Afzanizam added. The ringgit also gained against major and regional currencies. It strengthened against the Japanese yen (2.9185/9308 from 2.9359/9399), British pound (5.7876/8116 from 5.8141/8217), and euro (4.9472/9677 from 4.9597/9661). Among ASEAN peers, it appreciated versus the Singapore dollar (3.3067/3207 from 3.3192/3240) and Thai baht (12.9179/9795 from 13.0254/0488). Marginal gains were seen against the Indonesian rupiah (260.4/261.7) and Philippine peso (7.46/7.50). * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Landowner reluctance slows road project, says Rina

Published on: Monday, June 30, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 30, 2025 By: Lagatah Toyos Text Size: Rina receiving a souvenir from a community representative. TAWAU: The reluctance of private landowners involved in the Jalan Utara development project to relinquish their land for development purposes has been identified as a key obstacle in expediting the completion of the project. Kukusan Assemblywoman Datuk Rina Jainal, said she was informed that some parties refused to release their land even though it was the government's responsibility to develop the area. 'However, this is currently being reviewed to speed up the development of Jalan Utara, which indeed has a significant impact on the residents of the Kukusan area,' she told the media on Thursday. According to her, the matter was raised during her meeting with Sabah Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Ir Shahelmy Yahya, and Kalabakan Member of Parliament, Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandi, at his office recently to discuss the development of Jalan Utara, which is crucial for the Kukusan area. During the meeting, she also raised concerns regarding heavy vehicle transportation along Jalan Kalabakan, particularly involving the palm oil industry. Rina noted that while there is no immediate need for a dedicated route, industry players should act more responsibly in their use of other public roads. In the meantime, Rina urged civil servants and all relevant parties to act with integrity and professionalism to ensure that government development initiatives are not hindered by internal weaknesses. 'The public is watching our work…therefore, I hope all parties will uphold integrity and competitiveness in delivering the best services,' she added. For the record, the RM206 million Jalan Utara Baru road-widening project began in March 2023 and is expected to be completed within 36 months. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Kota Kinabalu: A large-scale community running event combining sports and cultural diplomacy is set to strengthen ties between Sabah and China on July 27 with the newly appointed Chinese Consul-General pledging his full support for the initiative. The 2025 Malaysia-China Friendship Run was announced during a courtesy meeting between the Malaysia-China Friendship Association Sabah and His Excellency Zhu Xinglong, who recently took up his post as Consul-General of the People's Republic of China in Kota Kinabalu. Malaysia-China Friendship Association Sabah President Dr Oh Ei Sun outlined how the event aims to enhance Malaysia-China relations through broad community participation, bringing together people from various sectors of society in a celebration of friendship and cooperation. The friendship run will go beyond athletics, featuring cultural exhibitions and performances that showcase the unique traditions of both Malaysian and Chinese cultures. The initiative represents a novel approach to diplomacy, using sports as a platform to foster mutual understanding and strengthen grassroots connections between the two nations. Oh expressed confidence that the event would help elevate cooperation between Sabah and China to new heights, particularly with the arrival of the new consul-general. The association, which has been promoting people-to-people exchanges since 2012, has previously organised cultural programs and facilitated business connections between Chinese enterprises and local small and medium enterprises in Sabah.
