Sabah's golfer wins Kelantan women's title

Published on: Friday, August 01, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 01, 2025 By: GL Oh Text Size: Charlayne poses with her trophy. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's Charlayne Chong emerged victorious in the women's category at the 48th Kelantan Amateur Open Golf Championship, held at the Kelantan Golf and Country Club from July 26–28. The 23-year-old golfer, who hails from Kota Kinabalu and is currently a student at the Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) National Golf Academy, posted a three-day total of 225 to clinch the title. She edged out Amberly Zaira Zamri, who finished second with a score of 227, while Nur Maisara Sa'ad settled for third with 233. Reflecting on her win, Charlayne credited her mental resilience as a crucial factor in navigating the demanding course. 'The course was decent, though managing it definitely pushed me outside my comfort zone,' she said. 'One key takeaway I learned this week is the importance of internal control over my thoughts, emotions, and everything that fuels unnecessary stress and doubt.' Despite the win, Charlayne acknowledged that there is still room for improvement, particularly in strengthening her mental game. 'I know there's still a lot more work to be done, especially in terms of improving my mental strength. But overall, it was a great experience to compete here,' she added. She also expressed her gratitude to the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) for the opportunity to compete, as well as to the UUM National Golf Academy and sponsors Leonian Malaysia, Callaway Golf Malaysia, and Golf Partner Malaysia for their continued support. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Kota Kinabalu: Sabah women deaf futsal team came in second after losing 1-9 to Penang in the final of the 5th Malaysian Deaf Futsal Championship held at the RKS Sports Centre in Petaling Jaya on July 25. They had earlier booked their place in the final with wins over Negeri Sembilan (3-1), Perak (3-1) and Melaka (2-0). Sabah Deaf Sports Association President Spencer Soo Kok Heng was delighted with the team's achievement in their maiden appearance in the National Championship. 'It was the first time we joined the competition and seven players were unable to make the trip because of fund issues. 'Despite only being able to feature eight players from the 15 allowed, finishing second was still a very good result. 'Furthermore, we need to take part in this tournament otherwise we can't qualify for Sopma (Malaysian Deaf Sports Games) XXII 2025 to be held in Sarawak this October,' he said. Meanwhile, the team was led by manager Azmi Saip with Lo Fook Fah as coach and the players were Mary Pamela Sylvester, Nicol Yeanna Peter, Sharolyn Arrabella Obil, Brigette Yasin, Fellen Tijin, Veaa Sterra Henry, Annzie Benedict and JC Ezra Grace Jerial @ Jiral. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Rhinos brush aside DPMM

Published on: Monday, July 28, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 28, 2025 By: GL Oh Text Size: Coach Alto (left) and Daniel Ting (in red) tries to escape his marker during the match against DPMM FC. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah FC brushed aside DPMM FC from Brunei 3-1 in their latest pre-season friendly at Likas Stadium on Saturday. They took a 2-0 lead at half time against this season's Super League newcomers with goals from Daniel Ting in the 11th minute and Miguel Angel Garrido Cifuentes in the 31st minute. Daniel added his second in the 71st minute before the visitors reduced the deficit late in the match. It was also the third pre-season match for Sabah FC following the 2-8 thrashing by Thailand top club Buriram United in the Asean Charity Shield match held two weeks ago in Thailand preceded by the 4-0 win over another Brunei club side Kasuka FC a week earlier at Likas Stadium. Coach Alto Linus was happy with the progress of the players following the big win. 'It was a good result from the team, but there are still several aspects of our game that need to be improved before the start of the new league season. 'I am satisfied with the overall performance of all the players, including the substitutes who came in the second half. 'This friendly was to strengthen the team's match fitness before the league begins in early August and I want to see the players are fully prepared and able to maintain their consistency to get positive results in every match,' he said. Meanwhile, the Rhinos are set to play more friendly matches before the opening match in the new season against Melaka FC at Likas Stadium on August 10. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
