Nicholas John, Head of Sports, Astro said, 'Football is the heartbeat of millions of Malaysians, and Astro is proud to lead the way in fuelling this passion. Over the past two seasons, we've seen viewership grow by over 20%, with nearly 24 million views in total. "This proves that the interest for the local football league is thriving, and it resonates well with fans. For this season, Astro is taking a fresher approach by spotlighting a lineup of football experts. "These experts, formerly professional players, will now share their insights in the studio, offering authentic perspectives from the field to the screen. We are also committed to supporting grassroots development through our 'Ini Padang Kita' campaign, which aims to restore and reactivate community fields as hubs for nurturing talent and fostering community unity.' Further strengthening its commitment to Malaysian football, Astro also announced its partnership with U Mobile as the Official Broadcast Sponsor of the Malaysia League for the second consecutive year. This strategic collaboration expands the reach of local leagues and strengthens the passion for local football. Datuk Abdul Ghani Hassan, President, Malaysian Football League (MFL), added, 'This new season promises to be even more exciting and full of surprises, with clubs stepping up their pre-season preparations for their squads. "The addition of three new clubs - Melaka FC, Imigresen FC, and the return of Brunei-based DPMM FC - will add flavour to this season's competition." To make it more special, for the 2025–2026 Malaysia League season, Astro is strengthening its broadcast team with two seasoned football figures who will bring fresh insights to match analysis and coverage. The two new pundits are Akmal Rizal Ahmad Rakhli, a prolific national striker of the 2000s, and Farizal Marlias, the former national team's No. 1 goalkeeper. They join an existing lineup that includes Zaquan Adha, Safee Sali, Razman Roslan, Nizaruddin Yusof, Norshahrul Idlan Talaha (Mat Yo), and Dato' Zainal Abidin Hassan. Their presence enriches match analysis not only from tactical and technical angles, but also from the lens of former players who truly understand the heartbeat and rhythm of the game. This season, Astro also launches the 'Ini Padang Kita' campaign – a tribute and honour to the local football fields that have played an instrumental role in developing Malaysian football. "These fields are more than just patches of grass; they are the birthplace of dreams, the earliest battlegrounds, and spaces where players and supporters from diverse backgrounds come together," said Astro in an official press release. "Through this sustainability initiative, Astro is prioritising the restoration of community fields not just in terms of infrastructure but also as safe, inclusive spaces for the younger generation to train, play, and build their dreams. "More than just a campaign, 'Ini Padang Kita' reflects a strong commitment towards football development at the grassroot level that begins small within communities and not just in large stadiums." Astro also intends to elevate the local football viewing experience with a comprehensive approach that goes beyond the 90 minutes on the field. In addition to exclusive on-ground and post-match coverage, supporters at the stadium will also enjoy performances by popular artists, pre-match carnivals, and a variety of interactive activities. Mirabel wins first pro title with nine-stroke victory in Pahang
PETALING JAYA: It didn't take long for Malaysian golf talent Mirabel Ting to lay claim to her first title in the professional ranks. The 19-year-old lifted the women's title in the PGM Royal Pahang Championship in Kuantan by a massive nine strokes – only three weeks after turning pro. A two-under 70 in the final round at Pahang Royal Golf Club was enough for Mirabel to secure her first title as a professional golfer with a total of 14-under 202. Mirabel carried a solid five-shot lead into the final round after carding a seven-under 65 on Wednesday. The Sarawakian, who made a surprising move to turn pro in the first week of July, laid down the marker with a five-under on the first day. Aretha Pan settled for second with a total of five-under 211 (68-69-74) with Zulaikah Nasser third on 216 (73-72-71). Mirabel, who left the amateur ranks with one more year to go at Florida State University, was the only woman golfer to finish below par in all three rounds. And Mirabel dedicated her win to her grandfather Ng Siaw Pheng, who introduced her to the game but passed away recently. "He always wanted me to turn pro and play in a major. He was always around whenever my brother (Malcolm Ting) and I returned to Miri to play golf. "I'm happy to be back home playing and to be playing alongside my brother as well," said the former world No. 2 ranked amateur, who pocketed RM10,000. Mirabel had made her pro debut at the Amundi Evian Ladies Championships but did not make the cut for the weekend. In the men's competition, Edven Ting ended a two-year title drought after winning an exciting three-way play-off battle against Ben Leong and amateur Nateeshvar Ganesh. Edven, Ben and Nateeshvar had to go to the play-offs after they were tied at 14-under 202. The title was only decided on the fifth play-off hole after Edven rolled in his putt while Ben missed his. Edven's last win was in the Toyota Tour at Templer Park Country Club in 2023. RESULTS Men 202: Edven Ying 69-66-67, Nateeshvar Ganesh (amateur) 69-67-66, Ben Leong 69-66-67 (Edven wins on the fifth playoff hole); 204: Jeremiah Kim Leun Kwang 68-67-69, Marcus Lim 69-63-72; 206: Malcom Ting Siong Hung 66-70-70; 207: Nicholas Fung 70-69-68; 208: Paul San 69-72-67, Khor Kheng Hwai 69-69-70, Shahriffuddin Ariffin 67-68-73; 209: Daeng Abdul Rahman 71-74-64, Syahiran Syakir 70-71-68. Shock exit as Syafiq, Nurqayyum slip behind SEA Games rivals at worlds
Nurqayyum Nazmi Mohamad Nazim of Malaysia competes at the World Championships in Singapore. - AP PETALING JAYA: It was always going to be an uphill task for the Malaysian divers to get past the preliminary stage of the men's 3m springboard individual event at the World Championships. But what came as a surprise was the failure of divers Mohd Syafiq Puteh and Nurqayyum Nazmi Mohd Nazim to outperform even their SEA Games rivals from Singapore and Thailand during the preliminaries at OCBC Aquatic Centre in Singapore yesterday. Reigning SEA Games springbard champion Syafiq and Nurqayyum were placed 53rd and 54th respectively in the field of 65 participants. Seasoned campaigner Syafiq faltered in his final two dives, scoring only 36.75 and 40.25 points. His total of 310.55 was well short of the mark needed to break into the top 20 and advance. It was also a forgettable debut for World Junior Championship bronze medallist Nurqayyum who struggled to keep pace with the level of competition throughout. The 19-year-old, who was competing on a lower difficulty standard compared to Syafiq, finished with 303.55 points. Only the top 18 divers advance to the semi-finals. Technical director Yeoh Ken Nee did not expect the outcome. "The boys under-performed. They did not qualify if based on the Minimum Qualifying Score of 370," said Ken Nee. He said the long waiting time before each dive may have also affected the composure of the divers. "The waiting time was also longer than usual for this competition. "Nurqayyum is competing for the first time in the world championships but Syafiq has featured a few times but this time, he did badly. "We will sit down with the coaches and divers to understand more about the situation." Singaporean youngster Avvir Tham, only 20, finished a commendable 22nd with a total of 363.90 points. His teammate Max Lee, only 18, also showed hope for the future after placing 44th with a total of 32625 points. Even Thai Chawanwat Juntaphadawon finished way above with 29th position, amassing 357.00 points. It is certainly a confidence boost to Chawanwat as he gears up for the SEA Games in December at his own backyard. South Korea, who are Malaysia's rival at the Asian level, also managed to get both divers into the semi-finals stage under the charge of former national diver Bryan Nickson Lomas. Yi Jaegyeong and Shin Jung-whi finished 14th (384.10) and 17th (379.20) respectively.
