Sabah Muaythai clinch third national title

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Muaythai once again proved their dominance on the national stage by capturing the overall title at the National Muaythai Championship, held in conjunction with the National Martial Arts Championship at the Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil, over the weekend. The state team claimed the overall crown for the third consecutive year with an impressive medal haul: 24 gold, 10 silver, and 25 bronze. Adding to their triumph, four Sabah athletes were recognised as best performers in their respective categories: Ariesya Dania (Best Cultural Performance)
Mohd Faliq (Best Male Boxer, Age 8–9)
Dazaizy Hafiy (Best Male Boxer, Age 12–13)
Kerry Dryan (Best Male Boxer, Age 16–17) Sabah Muaythai Association President, Haji Nazri Ab Razak, expressed pride in the team's performance and attributed the success to the collective effort of athletes, coaches, and families. 'Each medal represents countless hours of training and sacrifice. I'm extremely proud of how our team carried the Sabah name and spirit, proving once again we are a force to be reckoned with in Malaysian Muaythai,' he said. He also extended gratitude to parents and families, acknowledging their behind-the-scenes contributions. Head coach Cyrille Dhillon Tahing highlighted the long-term vision behind the team's success. 'We've spent years building Muaythai from the grassroots—through schools, local clubs, and statewide programs. This result is a direct outcome of strategic planning and the mental toughness of our fighters,' he said. Vice President Ahmad Ridwan Ghazali thanked the Sabah Sports Council and the Ministry of Youth and Sports for their continued support. Mirabel wins first pro title with nine-stroke victory in Pahang
PETALING JAYA: It didn't take long for Malaysian golf talent Mirabel Ting to lay claim to her first title in the professional ranks. The 19-year-old lifted the women's title in the PGM Royal Pahang Championship in Kuantan by a massive nine strokes – only three weeks after turning pro. A two-under 70 in the final round at Pahang Royal Golf Club was enough for Mirabel to secure her first title as a professional golfer with a total of 14-under 202. Mirabel carried a solid five-shot lead into the final round after carding a seven-under 65 on Wednesday. The Sarawakian, who made a surprising move to turn pro in the first week of July, laid down the marker with a five-under on the first day. Aretha Pan settled for second with a total of five-under 211 (68-69-74) with Zulaikah Nasser third on 216 (73-72-71). Mirabel, who left the amateur ranks with one more year to go at Florida State University, was the only woman golfer to finish below par in all three rounds. And Mirabel dedicated her win to her grandfather Ng Siaw Pheng, who introduced her to the game but passed away recently. "He always wanted me to turn pro and play in a major. He was always around whenever my brother (Malcolm Ting) and I returned to Miri to play golf. "I'm happy to be back home playing and to be playing alongside my brother as well," said the former world No. 2 ranked amateur, who pocketed RM10,000. Mirabel had made her pro debut at the Amundi Evian Ladies Championships but did not make the cut for the weekend. In the men's competition, Edven Ting ended a two-year title drought after winning an exciting three-way play-off battle against Ben Leong and amateur Nateeshvar Ganesh. Edven, Ben and Nateeshvar had to go to the play-offs after they were tied at 14-under 202. The title was only decided on the fifth play-off hole after Edven rolled in his putt while Ben missed his. Shock exit as Syafiq, Nurqayyum slip behind SEA Games rivals at worlds

But what came as a surprise was the failure of divers Mohd Syafiq Puteh and Nurqayyum Nazmi Mohd Nazim to outperform even their SEA Games rivals from Singapore and Thailand during the preliminaries at OCBC Aquatic Centre in Singapore yesterday. Reigning SEA Games springbard champion Syafiq and Nurqayyum were placed 53rd and 54th respectively in the field of 65 participants. Seasoned campaigner Syafiq faltered in his final two dives, scoring only 36.75 and 40.25 points. His total of 310.55 was well short of the mark needed to break into the top 20 and advance. It was also a forgettable debut for World Junior Championship bronze medallist Nurqayyum who struggled to keep pace with the level of competition throughout. The 19-year-old, who was competing on a lower difficulty standard compared to Syafiq, finished with 303.55 points. Only the top 18 divers advance to the semi-finals. Technical director Yeoh Ken Nee did not expect the outcome. "The boys under-performed. They did not qualify if based on the Minimum Qualifying Score of 370," said Ken Nee. He said the long waiting time before each dive may have also affected the composure of the divers. "The waiting time was also longer than usual for this competition. "Nurqayyum is competing for the first time in the world championships but Syafiq has featured a few times but this time, he did badly. "We will sit down with the coaches and divers to understand more about the situation." Singaporean youngster Avvir Tham, only 20, finished a commendable 22nd with a total of 363.90 points. His teammate Max Lee, only 18, also showed hope for the future after placing 44th with a total of 32625 points. Even Thai Chawanwat Juntaphadawon finished way above with 29th position, amassing 357.00 points. It is certainly a confidence boost to Chawanwat as he gears up for the SEA Games in December at his own backyard. South Korea, who are Malaysia's rival at the Asian level, also managed to get both divers into the semi-finals stage under the charge of former national diver Bryan Nickson Lomas. Yi Jaegyeong and Shin Jung-whi finished 14th (384.10) and 17th (379.20) respectively.
