Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's Charlayne Chong emerged victorious in the women's category at the 48th Kelantan Amateur Open Golf Championship, held at the Kelantan Golf and Country Club from July 26–28. The 23-year-old golfer, who hails from Kota Kinabalu and is currently a student at the Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) National Golf Academy, posted a three-day total of 225 to clinch the title. She edged out Amberly Zaira Zamri, who finished second with a score of 227, while Nur Maisara Sa'ad settled for third with 233. Reflecting on her win, Charlayne credited her mental resilience as a crucial factor in navigating the demanding course. 'The course was decent, though managing it definitely pushed me outside my comfort zone,' she said. 'One key takeaway I learned this week is the importance of internal control over my thoughts, emotions, and everything that fuels unnecessary stress and doubt.' Despite the win, Charlayne acknowledged that there is still room for improvement, particularly in strengthening her mental game. 'I know there's still a lot more work to be done, especially in terms of improving my mental strength. But overall, it was a great experience to compete here,' she added. She also expressed her gratitude to the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) for the opportunity to compete, as well as to the UUM National Golf Academy and sponsors Leonian Malaysia, Callaway Golf Malaysia, and Golf Partner Malaysia for their continued support. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Chelsea defender Colwill out of action with ACL injury

(EPA Images pic) Chelsea centre back Levi Colwill suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in training, the Premier League club said late on Thursday, with the 22-year-old expected to miss much of the new season. The England international underwent successful surgery on the injury, Chelsea added. Advertisement It typically takes some six to nine months for a player to recover from an ACL injury and return to action. 'The 22-year-old had reported back to Cobham for pre-season at the start of this week before unfortunately sustaining the injury in training,' Chelsea said in a statement. 'Medical assessments confirmed surgery would be the required course of action. 'Levi will now begin his recovery and be supported by the club's medical department at Cobham during his rehabilitation phase.' Advertisement Colwill made 43 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea last season and helped the West London side win the Club World Cup in July. Chelsea, who finished fourth last season, open their 2025-26 Premier League campaign against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge on Aug 17. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Charlayne charges back for third at RSGC Ladies Amateur Open

KUALA LUMPUR: National amateur golfer Charlayne Chong came within a whisker of a playoff at the Royal Selangor Golf Club (RSGC) Ladies Amateur Open and finished with a commendable third-place finish. The 23-year-old closed with a three-under 70 on Thursday to finish on a one-under 218 total - just one shot shy of leaders Bianca Naomi Laksono of Indonesia and Samantha Dizon of the Philippines. Charlayne, competing in the tournament for the first time, had stormed into the lead with a brilliant opening 68 on Tuesday. However, a disastrous 80 in the second round saw her fall out of contention before she rallied again on the final day - capped by birdies on her last two holes. "The first day went really well, I came in pretty strong and I was really happy with my score," said Charlayne. "But on the second day, things didn't quite go as planned. I think I felt a bit of pressure from the people around me, and I just couldn't find my rhythm. Nothing seemed to work that day. "Thankfully, I managed to bounce back today. I started strong and finished strong - birdie-birdie on the last two holes. That really made up for yesterday's mistakes. "I was hoping to make the playoff, but I'll take this result proudly. Bouncing back today meant a lot." Charlayne admitted that the second round ultimately cost her a shot at something more. "It could have been a better round, no doubt. But that's golf — things don't always go your way." The Sabahan, currently ranked No. 351 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), third highest behind Jeneath Wong (No. 95) and Wang Xin Yao (No. 158), has enjoyed a rich vein of form of late — having won the Kelantan Amateur Open last month and finished runner-up at the Negri Sembilan Amateur Open in June. Meanwhile, it was a case of third time's the charm for Bianca after claiming her first international win by edging Samantha on the second extra hole of a sudden-death playoff, following a tie at two-under 217. Bianca, who led by two heading into the final round, carded a 74 while Samantha returned a 72 to force extra holes. The Indonesian clinched the title by parring the replayed 18th hole against Samantha's bogey. "I'm very excited and happy with the result," said Bianca. "This course is really tough, so this win feels especially sweet for me. "This is my third time playing here, and it's definitely my best achievement. I've won several tournaments back home, but this being my first win outside Indonesia, it feels way bigger. I'll remember this for a long time."

Published on: Thursday, August 07, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 07, 2025 By: Gerry Lewis Text Size: Dr Haison said the event was not merely a competitive platform, but a space to uncover talent and recognise the exceptional potential of special education students in sports. TAMBUNAN: The 13th Special Education Athletics Championship (KOPK) organised by MSS Sabah which was held over three days here saw 736 student-athletes with special needs from across the State, accompanied by 444 officials and teacher escorts representing 24 districts, making it one of the largest such events held in Sabah. Tambunan District Education Officer Dr Haison Jahudin said the event was not merely a competitive platform, but a space to uncover talent and recognise the exceptional potential of special education students in sports. Advertisement Special recognition was given to Tambunan's Special Education Integration Programme (PPKI), which played a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth running of the event, alongside the supporting efforts of student assistants and the wider community. The championship also served as a platform to celebrate the remarkable achievements of Tambunan's special needs athletes who have brought pride to the state on both national and international stages. One inspirational figure was Felicia Mikat of Tambunan who began her education at SKPK Pekan Tuaran, continued to SMK Badin and later enrolled at the Malaysia Sports School Sabah. Between 2013 and 2017, she secured three gold medals in the National Schools Sports Championship in the 100m, 200m and long jump events. In 2017, Felicia brought home three bronze medals at the Asean Para Games in Kuala Lumpur in the 100m, 200m and 400m events. She also earned three gold medals in the 2016 and 2018 Para Sukma for the same events. Advertisement Another was Marell Michael from Kampung Timbou, Tambunan, a student of PPKI SMK Nambayan, who has shown that discipline and training can lead to exceptional success. Since competing in the national-level KOPK MSSM in 2022, Marell has collected three gold medals in the 4x100m relay (each year setting new records), three silver medals in the 100m and 200m events and three bronze medals in the 100m, 200m and 4x400m events. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
