US singer Chris Brown has been released on £5 million bail after spending time at HMP Forest Bank in Salford, where he was held on a GBH charge
Chris Brown reportedly made the most of his brief time in a UK prison by singing for fellow inmates and expressing heartfelt thanks to one who looked out for him.
The 36-year-old American R&B star found himself behind bars at HMP Forest Bank in Salford, Greater Manchester, after being denied bail in connection with a grievous bodily harm (GBH) charge. Despite initial concerns from fans that his celebrity status and wealth might make him a target, insiders say the singer was treated well by other prisoners.
'Sometimes people will be targeted if other inmates know they have money, but they looked after him instead,' a source told T he Sun. 'They know he's famous and also American so not really aware of how prisons work over here.'
With no access to extra privileges, Brown had to stick to the standard offerings available to all inmates. 'He had no treats so all he could do was order the basic food you're offered.'
During evening lockdown, some prisoners reportedly called on him to perform. 'When it was lock up at night-time, some of them were shouting, 'Sing us a song Chris!'' the source said.
The singer responded by belting out tunes in his cell, bringing a touch of star power to the prison's halls.
Before his release on £5 million bail this past Wednesday, Brown left a personal note for an inmate named Dave who had shown him kindness during his time inside.
The handwritten message read: 'To Dave, Thank you my brother, I appreciate everything you've done for me while I've been banged up. Keep being a good person. God sees all and he sees your heart. You'll be home soon my bro. Cheers!!'
Brown was arrested at around 2am last Thursday at Manchester's Lowry Hotel. A magistrate ordered him into custody the next day after rejecting his initial bail application.
He now awaits trial on allegations he assaulted music producer Abe Diaw with a bottle at London nightclub Tape in February 2023.
Another man, 38-year-old Omololu Akinlolu, has also been charged with GBH in relation to the incident.
Despite the serious legal trouble, Brown has been granted permission to continue with his planned tour of the UK, which includes ten shows across June and July. He and Akinlolu are scheduled to formally enter pleas at Southwark Crown Court on June 20.
Meanwhile, defiant fans have been rallying behind the star. Crowds were spotted outside the Lowry Hotel hoping for a glimpse of the singer as news of his release spread.

"If he was moved, he would be kept in better conditions, with all the rooms single ones and less restrictions on things like TV and DvDs plus visitors... If you are serving a sentence as long as his, you would want to be in a secure hospital unit rather than prison. No officer at Belmarsh believes he is mentally ill but he says the right things in meetings," a source said last night. Any move would also hit the taxpayer with a much higher bill – of £325,000 per year compared to £57,000 in prison - for Rudakubana's care. The yob is serving at least 52 years for killing Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, Alice Aguiar, nine, and six-year-old Bebe King last summer. Speaking to The Sun, the source added: "Conversations are happening now about his future, after he was being assessed by therapists, psychologists and other medical experts. He is very keen for a move because but others at Belmarsh think he is gaming the system." When the teenager was sentenced in January, it was revealed he had been under the care of an NHS mental health service between 2019 and 2023 - until he "stopped engaging". The fiend has been held under strict conditions at Belmarsh, which is in southeast London, but he somehow was able to attack the guard in May. Rudakubana was allowed a kettle and is believed to have used it to boil water ahead of the "serious assault," after which the officer needed treatment in hospital. He has since returned to work, it is understood. Ministry of Justice sources told The Sun initial assessments had started – but said no hospital referral had been "initiated" or was ongoing.

When David's Doctor bi-generated in the 60th anniversary special, his 'half' went on to live a normal life in an alternative universe while Ncuti Gatwa's carried on as the Time Lord. 'It wouldn't be beyond the realms of imagination for him to return with Billie as Rose for a one-off special to celebrate not only their partnership, but the anniversary of BBC bringing back Doctor Who." David, 54, played the 10th Doctor from 2005 to 2010 and appeared in three specials returning as the 14th Doctor before handing the role over to 32-year-old Sex Education star Ncuti. However, die-hard fans think there may be another reason behind his exit. Taking to X, a fan named Mr Tardis wrote: "In October 2024, Ncuti Gatwa was on 'The Graham Norton Show' saying he was going to be filming another series of DW next year. In June 2025, he officially leaves the show and regenerates. This was never the plan. What a shame. He deserved so much better." But the BBC were quick to shut down those claims. A spokesperson said: "Whilst we never comment on the future of the Doctor, any suggestion that Ncuti Gatwa has been 'axed' is pure fiction."
