Shocking act at Paris War Memorial: Man lights cigarette from eternal flame, faces suspended sentenced

Mint2 days ago
A man caught on video lighting a cigarette from the eternal flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier under the Arc de Triomphe in Paris has been handed a three-month suspended sentence, according to Ireland's National Public Service Multi-Media Organisation, Raidió Teilifís Éireann.
Hakim H, a 47-year-old construction worker living in Normandy and working in Paris, was found guilty of desecrating the sacred monument by a Paris criminal court. The man, as per the report, admitted his actions during an expedited trial, describing his behavior as "the stupidity of the century."
'I deeply regret this, I apologise to all French people,' Hakim H was quoted as saying, breaking down in tears in the courtroom. He explained that he acted under the influence of alcohol and medication.
Besides the suspended sentence, Hakim was fined a symbolic one euro and ordered to seek treatment for his alcohol and drug addictions.
The incident occurred on Monday evening and was widely shared on social media, provoking public indignation. The footage shows Hakim stepping over protective barriers, crouching to light his cigarette from the flame that has burned continuously since 1923, then walking away calmly as tourists watch.
French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau condemned the act on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating: 'This unworthy and deplorable act undermines the memory of those who died for France.'
Veterans Minister Patricia Miralles described the action as a grave insult, declaring: '"France will never tolerate tarnishing the memory of those who died for her. This is not a simple deviation, it is a desecration.'
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier has stood beneath the Arc de Triomphe since 1920 as France's principal tribute to fallen soldiers, holding the body of an unidentified serviceman from World War I. The eternal flame at the site, first lit in 1923, symbolizes enduring remembrance and respect for the dead.

‘Bedroom jihadis' emerge as threat in J&K: ‘Digital is the new battlefront'

Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir claim to have uncovered a new kind of threat, quite unlike the armed terrorist but emblematic of the times. 'Bedroom jihadis' — termed thus for they use social media from the safety of their homes to incite communal discord — form the nub of a renewed cross-border effort from Pakistan to destabilise the region, officials told news agency PTI. "After years of fighting armed terrorists, security agencies have been facing this hidden enemy in which these new-age jihadis use computers and smartphones," an official was quoted as saying.(Pixabay) A network of social media handles controlled by terror groups in Pakistan was pinpointed in a special investigation. They have been intruding local digital spaces and fueling them with inflammatory content and propaganda. "After years of fighting armed terrorists, security agencies have been facing this hidden enemy in which these new-age jihadis use computers and smartphones to wage war from just about anywhere, spreading rumours and influencing youths," an official in the know of the developments was quoted as saying by PTI. A similar trend emerged eight years ago, in 2017, but died down in the crackdown after the abrogation of special status of the state, and its convresion to UT, in 2019. But the "bedroom jihadis" have surfaced again after the assembly elections last year, officials told PTI. Their aim is possibly yo destablise the elected government, the officials said. As part of the investigation over several weeks, security agencies scrutinised thousands of posts, comments and private messages. An instance thay cite was the recent Muharram, observed by the Shia community, when there was tension between the two sects of the Muslim community — the other being Sunni — over a social media post. Another was when personal details of Kashmiri Pandit migrants appointed under a central rehabilitation scheme were leaked. The police had arrested a local man who had allegedly been directed from across the border to do this. "Anyone sitting on his bed or sofa can plant fake news in one of the thousand chat groups, and the entire Union Territory can plunge into communal divide," said an official involved with the probe. Many X (formerly Twitter) users have created fake accounts to spread fake narratives being peddled from across the border, the official further told PTI. "It is like finding a needle in a haystack, but nevertheless effective policing has led to blocking or nabbing such elements," another official said. The reach of these chat groups and social media posts extends beyond Jammu and Kashmir, with participation from youngsters in Delhi and abroad, he added. "The digital battlefield is increasingly becoming a front where external forces seek to destabilise the region by exploiting local tensions," former director general of police, J&K, Kuldeep Khoda told the news agency.

When the Indian man attempts to film their license plate, one of the men shouts, 'Do you want me to get out of the car and f*****g kill you?' The group also insults the man with slurs such as 'big nose' and 'f*****g immigrant.' What Peterborough Police said The Peterborough Police Service said in a press release it has made an arrest in connection with the incident. 'On Friday, August 8, 2025, officers began an investigation into the incident, which happened on July 29, 2025. The accused has been released on an undertaking and will appear in court September 16, 2025. 'Trump proud s*xual assaulter': Martina Navratilova calls out Donald Trump after Mike Tyson comment resurfaces

Martina Navratilova calls out Donald Trump after Mike Tyson comment resurfaces (Image via Getty) US President Donald Trump's controversial statement about boxer Mike Tyson has resulted in Martina Navratilova, a tennis star, condemning him more recently. This occurred as Trump is under rising queries over his relationships with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who passed in prison in August 2019. The remark Trump made concerned Mike Tyson's 1992 rape conviction. Navratilova called out Trump for always defending men accused of sexual crimes, calling him a 'proud sexual assaulter and an adjudicated rapist.' Martina Navratilova blasts Donald Trump over Mike Tyson's rape case comments Six years in jail was Mike Tyson's sentence in 1992 when he was convicted of raping a beauty pageant candidate aged 18. Donald Trump then surprised several by claiming the penalty was too severe on Late Night with David Letterman. Trump also accused the young woman, claiming she was "dancing at his door at one o'clock in the morning." These phrases enraged people since they looked to absolve Tyson's crime. Years later, in August 2025, an X (previously Twitter) user reposted Trump's previous remarks. Having been very vocal against Trump for years, Martina Navratilova saw this and reacted strongly. She wrote on X that Trump has always made excuses for rapists like Tyson. Navratilova, a Czech-American and winner of 18 Grand Slam singles titles, has never been shy about speaking out. She called Trump a 'proud sexual assaulter' and said he has a long history of defending men accused of sexual violence. He said that his name was wrongly put in Jeffrey Epstein's secret files by former FBI Director James B. Comey, former US Attorney General Merrick Garland, and former President Joe Biden. Trump called the situation 'a hoax' and accused those leaders of trying to hurt him. This was reported by American lawyer Ron Filipkowski on X. Martina Navratilova responded to Filipkowski's post by saying Trump's assertions demonstrate his "fear." Navratilova, 68, keeps speaking out against Trump's words and deeds even when his admirers attack her. She champions survivors of abuse and violence and remains steadfast in pointing out what she considers to be wrong. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!
