Shocking act at Paris War Memorial: Man lights cigarette from eternal flame, faces suspended sentenced
Hakim H, a 47-year-old construction worker living in Normandy and working in Paris, was found guilty of desecrating the sacred monument by a Paris criminal court. The man, as per the report, admitted his actions during an expedited trial, describing his behavior as "the stupidity of the century."
'I deeply regret this, I apologise to all French people,' Hakim H was quoted as saying, breaking down in tears in the courtroom. He explained that he acted under the influence of alcohol and medication.
Besides the suspended sentence, Hakim was fined a symbolic one euro and ordered to seek treatment for his alcohol and drug addictions.
The incident occurred on Monday evening and was widely shared on social media, provoking public indignation. The footage shows Hakim stepping over protective barriers, crouching to light his cigarette from the flame that has burned continuously since 1923, then walking away calmly as tourists watch.
French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau condemned the act on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating: 'This unworthy and deplorable act undermines the memory of those who died for France.'
Veterans Minister Patricia Miralles described the action as a grave insult, declaring: '"France will never tolerate tarnishing the memory of those who died for her. This is not a simple deviation, it is a desecration.'
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier has stood beneath the Arc de Triomphe since 1920 as France's principal tribute to fallen soldiers, holding the body of an unidentified serviceman from World War I. The eternal flame at the site, first lit in 1923, symbolizes enduring remembrance and respect for the dead.

Many X (formerly Twitter) users have created fake accounts to spread fake narratives being peddled from across the border, the official further told PTI. "It is like finding a needle in a haystack, but nevertheless effective policing has led to blocking or nabbing such elements," another official said. The reach of these chat groups and social media posts extends beyond Jammu and Kashmir, with participation from youngsters in Delhi and abroad, he added. "The digital battlefield is increasingly becoming a front where external forces seek to destabilise the region by exploiting local tensions," former director general of police, J&K, Kuldeep Khoda told the news agency.

The investigation included viewing videos, some of which were circulating on social media, and that included hate-based language,' the press release read. The release said an 18-year-old male from the City of Kawartha Lakes has been charged with "Utter threats - Cause Death or Bodily Harm". The accused has been released on an undertaking and will appear in court September 16, 2025. While there is no specific charge for hate crime in Canada that applies to this incident, there is a hate crime element to this case and that will be addressed as the case moves through the court process. "Anybody who has seen the video in this case will understand that that type of behaviour is not acceptable in our community, nor any community. I would like to thank everyone who came forward with information in connection with this incident. Clearly this is not the standard of acceptable behaviour in our city. We encourage residents to continue to report hate bias incidents/crimes that take place in our community. Reporting these incidents to police is crucial to ensuring we have the information needed to investigate and pursue charges when appropriate.
