Car review: Lexus LX 700h is the latest power player on the road
The launch of the all-new fourth-generation Lexus LX alongside the Toyota Land Cruiser LC300 was among the most anticipated automotive events in 2021, and ever since, they've been selling like hot shawarma. Now, the range includes a hybrid variant, LX 700h, the most powerful and fuel-efficient LX yet. But with a steep starting price of Dh590,000, is it really worth twice as much as an LC300?
DESIGN & AESTHETICS
Yes, the Lexus LX is the Land Cruiser's cousin, but it carries a grand identity of its own. This full-size SUV (5100x1990x1895 mm) has a certain visual heft, second only to the Escalade. But it's not just about size — it's about exaggerated details. The massive spindle grille — arguably with one slat too many—and angular headlamps with triple-eye LED units give it a commanding face. Then, there's that tall, brawny hood, which has a central concave indentation to improve forward visibility. Its traditional two-box silhouette adds to the robust stance, while the giant 22-inch forged multi-spoke alloy wheels lend it a touch of sophisticated chic. At the rear, the tailpipe is kept hidden, as a subtle nod to its green credentials. The LX 700h may seem bold and edgy to some or marginally overstyled to others, but it undeniably looks premium — ready to take you to your next board meeting or dinner soirée in glitzy Dubai.
Keeping the ride height in mind, Lexus equipped it with a side step and an A-pillar grab handle to aid entry. And like an electric chauffeur, the soft-closing doors take care of themselves if left ajar. Inside, the cabin is as luxurious as expected from Lexus, featuring leather-draped surfaces, beautiful wood trims, and large tech-rich screens — all showcasing impeccable build quality. The uncommon dual-screen setup consists of a 12.3-inch screen for navigation and media, and a seven-inch display just below for drive modes and climate control. However, while the centre console looks sophisticated, the clutter of buttons makes it feel operationally complicated. The leather and wood steering wheel is a delight to grip, and it's complemented by large, well-placed controls. Right behind it sits a digital instrument cluster with vivid, configurable graphics.
In terms of accommodations, the second row is roomy, but not vast, and the third row — while offering separate vents and USB ports — forces knees-up seating due to a high floor. And, surprisingly, there's no panoramic sunroof.
POWERTRAIN & PERFORMANCE
You can start the LX 700h with a fancy fingerprint sensor on the push-start switch although its placement may lead to you confusing it with infotainment control.
Like the LX 600/LC300, it houses a twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6, but here it's paired with a single electric motor powered by a small nickel-metal hydride battery. This setup delivers smooth, broad power, while the shift-by-wire transmission and stubby toggle-style shifter ensure seamless gear changes.
Combined output is 457 PS and 790 Nm — a solid jump from the LX 600's 409 hp and 650 Nm — but the added weight somewhat negates the advantage. On the road, the LX 700h glides almost like a luxury limo over rough patches and feels more refined than the LC300. However, there's noticeable body roll during quick manoeuvres. In our 0–100kmph acceleration sprints, it consistently clocked under 7.5 seconds — about the same as its siblings — and despite being a hybrid, fuel economy wasn't much better either, returning a dismal 5.4kmpl. A plug-in hybrid powertrain would've made more sense at this price.
Off-road credentials remain strong, thanks to a four-wheel drive system with a Torsen limited-slip differential, Crawl Control, Multi-Terrain Select modes, and hydraulic suspension that adjusts ride height. Still, it's unlikely the first or second owner will venture off-road — but if you must, opt for the Overtrail variant with the 18-inch knobby tyres.
FEATURES & FUNCTIONALITY
Luggage space behind the third row is minimal at around 200 litres, but folding down both the second and third rows expands it to nearly 1,800 litres. Inside, there's a large central cool box up front — accessible from the left, right, and rear — and in the boot, a three-point plug that's handy for a laptop or grill. It can also tow up to 3,500kg.
The 25-speaker Mark Levinson audio system delivers superb fidelity. The infotainment also supports wireless Apple CarPlay, allowing use of preferred navigation and music apps. However, the voice assistant is sluggish, and wireless charging speed is average. Rear passengers are treated to dual 11.4-inch screens, an HDMI port for game consoles, and two USB-C ports. The four-zone climate control is powerful, and features like ventilated, heated, and five-mode massaging front seats reinforce the luxury vibe.
Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 offers comprehensive driver assistance technology, but standout features include digital rear-view mirrors for unobstructed visibility and a 360-degree monitor with a clever underbody view — though its feed occasionally interrupts screen functions.
VERDICT
The brand Lexus was created to win over luxury buyers by delivering real value through exceptional build quality, executive styling, and cossetting features at a relatively affordable price. The 2025 Lexus LX 700h attempts to do this. However, the cluttered centre console detracts from usability, the hybrid system offers little real-world advantage, and the price is steep. It's a good luxury SUV in isolation — but is it worth twice as much as a Land Cruiser, or better than its ICE-powered LX 600 sibling? I'm not so sure. That said, Lexus' renowned reliability and strong resale value make it a better long-term ownership bet than many rivals.

By K Raveendran Strong signs of undercurrents are emerging in the aviation space between India and the Gulf. There is renewed tussle over landing rights — the coveted permissions that determine which airlines get to fly where, how often, and with how many seats. For years, this battleground has been tilted in favour of Gulf-based giants, particularly Emirates and later Etihad, both of which have entrenched themselves so deeply in the India-Gulf sector that they dominate passenger volumes, especially among the vast Indian expatriate population in the Gulf. But recent movements suggest that the terrain may be shifting again, albeit not necessarily in India's favour, raising concerns about whether past missteps are being repeated or even institutionalized. The first wave of this dominance came during the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) years, a period that aviation experts and political observers often recall with unease. During this time, India's aviation rights — especially in the high-demand Gulf sector — were offered up with a generosity that baffled many. The most glaring beneficiary was Emirates, which capitalised on India's fragmented aviation policy and the aggressive diplomacy of Dubai government. The role of Praful Patel, then Union Civil Aviation Minister, and N. Chandrababu Naidu, then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, has often come under scrutiny for facilitating deals that disproportionately benefited Gulf carriers. The underlying implication, often whispered but never proven in courts, was that kickbacks were exchanged for each seat Emirates filled on its India routes — a suggestion that continues to fester in the collective memory of Indian aviation policy circles. At that time, Emirates enjoyed a distinct monopoly, owing largely to the fact that it was the sole UAE-based carrier of international standing. With Dubai's rise as a global aviation hub and Emirates' unmatched marketing muscle, the airline quickly scaled up its footprint in India, locking in prime time slots and lucrative routes with little resistance. In effect, Emirates became the default choice for millions of Indians flying to the Gulf and beyond, eclipsing the capacity and visibility of Indian carriers like Air India. This asymmetry didn't just result in a business setback for Indian aviation — it triggered a slow bleeding of India's aviation sovereignty. The profits, the passenger data, the traffic, and the global prestige of being a gateway carrier all accrued to Emirates, while Indian airlines floundered under the weight of policy paralysis and state apathy. Things became even more complicated when Etihad entered the fray. As Abu Dhabi's flagship carrier, Etihad's arrival introduced a new axis of influence in the India-Gulf aviation theatre. Where earlier it was just Emirates leveraging its ties with Indian authorities to expand its rights, now both Emirates and Etihad were competing not just with each other but also for the same slice of the Indian aviation pie. The diplomatic equation thus had to be recalibrated. No longer could Dubai's interests automatically translate into Emirates' gain. Abu Dhabi, backed by the UAE federal structure, began asserting its claim, demanding equitable treatment for Etihad. India, in turn, found itself in a quagmire. Granting more rights to one Gulf emirate risked offending the other. But instead of revisiting its entire bilateral framework or strengthening Indian carriers to hold their ground, Indian policymakers chose the path of least resistance: acquiescing to more requests from both sides. The result was that foreign carriers ended up with the lion's share of rights, while Indian carriers, with limited international ambitions and fleet capacity at the time, were left watching from the sidelines. Fast forward to today, and the script seems eerily familiar. Both Emirates and Etihad are once again lobbying for increased landing rights and additional seat allocations. This comes at a time when the dynamics of the aviation industry have evolved significantly. There is renewed focus on strategic aviation corridors, a post-pandemic surge in travel, and a stronger realisation globally that aviation is not just commerce — it is a soft power instrument. Yet despite all this, India appears to be on the verge of conceding even more ground. That this is happening without a thorough review of how previous concessions impacted national interests is particularly disheartening. A disturbing undertone to this situation is the re-emergence — or rather, the persistence — of the very individuals who were instrumental in the original giveaways. These actors, once thought to have exited the stage after presiding over what some call the 'Great Indian Aviation Surrender,' are now reappearing in various roles, emboldened by their earlier success and perhaps by the lack of accountability. The risk here is not just the erosion of market share but the institutionalization of a defeatist approach to aviation diplomacy, where India negotiates from a position of weakness rather than asserting its growing economic and geopolitical clout. However, the new player that adds an unexpected twist to this ongoing narrative is IndiGo. As India's largest airline by a considerable margin, IndiGo is no longer content with its domestic dominance. It wants in on the Gulf bonanza, and it is using its size, efficiency, and growing international aspirations to demand a bigger seat at the table. This changes the calculus considerably. For the first time in years, there's an Indian private player with both the appetite and the capacity to challenge Gulf airlines on their turf. IndiGo's entry into the fray has the potential to reshape the competitive landscape — provided, of course, the government aligns national policy with corporate ambition. To avoid repeating past mistakes, India must initiate a root-and-branch review of its bilateral air service agreements. The country needs a clear aviation doctrine — one that articulates when, how, and under what conditions foreign airlines may operate in India. This doctrine must prioritize Indian interests, encourage domestic capacity building, and align with broader national objectives. It must also be shielded from short-term political compulsions and the influence of lobbying networks that have historically undermined strategic policymaking. (IPA Service)

The signing ceremony, held at Bayan Palace in the presence of Sheikh Mansour and Kuwait's Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, underscores the two Gulf nations' intent to strengthen economic and diplomatic ties amid evolving regional dynamics. The agreements span a wide range of areas, with key MoUs covering healthcare, infrastructure, investment, social development, energy transition, and AI, as both countries pursue mutual development priorities and enhanced regional integration. UAE-Kuwait agreements signed According to the WAM report, the key deals signed cover sectors such as: Health: MoUs were signed between the UAE and Kuwait's health ministries to boost collaboration in medical services and public health policy. Education: Both countries agreed to expand cooperation in the education sector through a pact signed by their respective ministers of education. Energy and infrastructure: MoUs included commitments to collaborate in land transport, roads, oil and gas, and future energy initiatives such as water and electricity. Technology and industry: A separate agreement focused on industry and advanced technology was signed to support innovation and knowledge exchange. Humanitarian and legal affairs: Joint frameworks were agreed to address human trafficking and legal cooperation, reflecting a shared focus on rights and rule of law. Investment: The UAE's Minister of Investment and the head of Kuwait's Direct Investment Promotion Authority signed an MoU to promote bilateral investment flows. Security and data: Ministries of Interior from both sides inked an MoU on data protection and joint security information-sharing projects. AI partnership initiated, naval contract with EDGE The Kuwait Investment Authority joined the 'Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Partnership' initiative, which includes global partners MGX, BlackRock, Global Infrastructure Partners, and Microsoft — adding regional backing to the tech-driven project. In a separate defence agreement, Kuwait's Ministry of Defence signed a contract with UAE-based EDGE Group for the procurement of several 'Falaj 3' class missile boats, highlighting deepening defence industry ties between the two states. Representing the largest naval shipbuilding export in the region and one of the highest-value naval export deals globally, the agreement positions EDGE as the prime contractor overseeing the design, construction, trials, delivery, Integrated Logistics Support (ILS), and In-Service Support (ISS) for the vessels. EDGE will also supply ammunition, highlighting its end-to-end defence capabilities. Every year on June 5, World Environment Day serves as a powerful reminder that the health of our planet is inextricably tied to our daily choices. This year's theme, 'Beat Plastic Pollution,' is especially urgent for the MENA region as we grapple with the mounting environmental cost of single-use plastics. While global commitments and national policies play a crucial role, the most transformative solutions often begin closer to home, and they begin with the communities we live in. At Sharjah Sustainable City, we have seen firsthand how community-led initiatives can drive real, lasting change in reducing plastic waste. Empowering communities to understand the impact of their choices and take ownership of sustainable practices is one of the most effective strategies to combat plastic waste. Though plastic pollution is a global issue; but it drills down to deeply personal choices. From the grocery bags we carry to the packaging we discard, every household decision adds up. Communities have the power to model behavior, influence others, and create a ripple effect of change. When neighbors see each other reusing, recycling, and rethinking their plastic consumption, sustainability becomes a shared mission rather than an isolated effort. Education and engagement are the catalysts. Sharjah Sustainable City was established with a vision to be more than just a residential development. Today, it is a blueprint for how cities of the future can nurture sustainability at a grassroots level. Through a range of initiatives, we actively engage our residents in reducing plastic usage and promoting circular practices. As a strategic supporter of the Government of Sharjah's sustainable development objectives, the city is setting a positive trend for sustainable living in the emirate of Sharjah and the UAE. Extending over 7.2 million square feet of land in the Al Rahmaniya area of Sharjah, the City has become more than a residential development. It aims to inspire neighboring communities to adopt sustainable initiatives through education and community engagement. During our annual Earth Week Challenge, for instance, we encouraged families to take part in sustainability-themed activities, including waste audits, plastic-free living days, and community clean-ups. These small, hands-on experiences are powerful tools for behavior change, especially for children who are growing up with a sense of responsibility toward the planet. From recycling plastics and using reusable bags to conserving water and using eco-friendly transportation around the city, residents bonded over ways to save the planet. One of our most creative and practical initiatives is the upcycling workshop, where our community, especially young residents, recently bonded over fun painting sessions, transforming used tires into functional bike holders now installed throughout the community. In collaboration with Gulftainer, this initiative not only diverted waste from landfills but also sparked conversations around reuse and design thinking in sustainable living. We also host regular recycling drives and awareness campaigns, using interactive sessions and gamification to make the learning process engaging for all age groups. Partnerships to amplify impact I believe no community is an island, and partnerships are essential to scaling impact. Our collaboration with local entities such as BEEAH and Sharjah City Municipality enables us to enhance our recycling infrastructure, run joint awareness campaigns, and contribute to the broader environmental goals of the emirate. Through these partnerships, we've implemented dedicated recycling bins, conducted educational roadshows, and facilitated household waste segregation. The goal is to embed sustainable behavior not just within the borders of our residential community but across Sharjah and beyond. Our local actions also align closely with the UAE's national efforts to tackle plastic pollution. With the ban on single-use plastic bags now in effect across several emirates, including Sharjah, the UAE is sending a strong and clear message that sustainability is no longer optional. The UAE Circular Economy Policy, alongside other initiatives, reflects a decisive shift toward environmental accountability. As a community designed for net-zero energy living, we are proud to support and model these policies into action. The way forward Beating plastic pollution requires more than a one-off campaign or a new recycling bin. It demands a culture shift that starts with people and not just policies. Community-led solutions are our strongest defence because they tap into what matters most: shared values, human connection, and collective purpose. If every neighborhood became a champion of sustainability, imagine the global change we could inspire.
