During a recent hard-hat tour, I tiptoed past dust sheets and dangling chandeliers for a sneak peek at the reincarnated legend. Even before the final polish, the transformation is jaw-dropping. The soaring lobby has been restored to its original 1931 proportions, with gleaming marble underfoot, hand-restored murals overhead and sightlines that feel grander and more open than ever. The iconic 'Wheel of Life' mosaic shines once again and, just where they belong, guests will spot the gilded Queen Victoria clock and Cole Porter's Steinway piano.
Gone are the office cubicles and corporate carpet vibes of the past. In their place are creamy marble floors, silver-leaf ceilings and custom Pierre-Yves Rochon furnishings—plus thoughtful modern details in every room, from through-closet luggage storage to dedicated bar setups.
The Waldorf's comeback hasn't been quick or linear. Originally opened in 1931 by hotelier Lucius Boomer after the demolition of the original Fifth Avenue location, the property became a hub for galas, diplomats and cultural icons—from Marilyn Monroe and Eartha Kitt to Queen Elizabeth and every U.S. president from Hoover to Obama. In 2017, the hotel closed for its extensive overhaul, converting the top floors into private residences while Hilton retained management. Now under Dajia Insurance Group, the hotel returns with fresh ownership, new vision and its old glamour fully intact.
The culinary program alone makes a strong case for a visit. Later this month, the revitalized Peacock Alley returns as a gilded cocktail bar led by PDT's Jeff Bell. The two-story flagship Lex Yard, from Gramercy Tavern's Michael Anthony, will serve seasonal American fare in a glowing space by AvroKO that nods to the hotel's secret train platform below. A third venue, Yoshoku, helmed by Ry Nitzkowski, offers a playful Japanese twist on brasserie dining.
Room bookings open Monday, September 1. Every category starts at nearly 600 square feet and is decked in subtle hues of mint and mauve, accented with deco-inspired light fixtures and plush, contemporary touches. Other draws include a 30,000-square-foot spa, 43,000 square feet of restored event space and a Library Lounge check-in area that replaces the old front desk with a serene welcome zone.

Von Engelbrechten began posting Sylvanian Drama videos in 2021, when she was a 19-year-old multimedia student at Dublin City University. She told The Tab in a 2023 interview that her videos were meant to parody shows like 'Gossip Girl' and 'Pretty Little Liars.' 'I'm always surprised that I'm not already canceled for the stuff that I do,' she said. 'I don't mean any harm and also … a lot of the issues that I joke about are problems in my own life. 'There's a lot of stuff about weight and dieting and people struggling with that, and that's all just me joking about myself. So I'm not making fun of anyone.' Inspiration for content As reported by the BBC, the court document states that in an interview with influencer marketing company Fohr, Von Engelbrechten said her inspiration for the storylines came from "cringey TV shows and early 2000s comedy". 'I try to embody that with the Sylvanians." Asked why she thought her videos were so popular she told Fohr: "Maybe it's because it's coming from the voice of a 22-year-old who struggles with the same things as [they do]. 'I have a lot of storylines about insecure people, diet culture, toxic men, and sustainability, which I think other girls my age are also thinking a lot about." ‘I swam past a small village in Kent and knew I had to move there'
Mark Sawyer first set eyes on the small Kent village which would become his home from the Channel. It was 2006 and he was swimming from England to France in a team relay with two others. 'I distinctly remember the captain of the boat saying, 'There's St Margarets, it's a really pretty village '. I saw it from the water for the first time.' The 56-year-old and his ex-partner had determined that their second home would be in the east of the country, as they eschewed Devon and Cornwall. Then, on a trip to Kent in 2008, they drove through the village. Sawyer says: 'We saw this house, at the end of the sea promenade, and just fell in love with it. There was no For Sale sign nor evidence it was on the market. It didn't even tick any of the boxes that we had set ourselves.' But it was love at first sight. The couple liked the property so much that Sawyer paid £20k to the estate agent to take it off the market immediately. They paid £800k for the three-bedroom house, Mermaid Cottage, and Sawyer says he has spent in the region of £1m renovating it – including buying extra land to cultivate a garden. Mermaid Cottage was built in 1929 in Art Deco style. Playwright Noel Coward bought it after the Second World War, and lived there for seven years. Guests at the house included actress Katharine Hepburn and Ian Fleming, the author of James Bond, who later took over custodianship of the house, and wrote it into his 1955 Bond thriller Moonraker. 'I'm a massive Bond fan. For me that was the cherry on the cake,' says semi-retired Sawyer, who works in private equity. 'Most people say when we're down there: squint and you could be in the Mediterranean,' he adds. 'In the winter, the bay is so much quieter. You sit there with the log-burning stove roaring with a storm blowing outside. You're immersed in nature. The only land you can see from our living room is France. 'It gets into your soul a bit. You feel that you are in the middle of nowhere – but you're not.' His partner, Lara Jewitt, is a former Chelsea Flower Show gold medallist, and the garden emulates Derek Jarman's Prospect Cottage. In 2014, the couple bought land from the council to develop a garden, something which became a lockdown project. But they still wanted more garden space. 'We developed every square inch down there, and we just wanted a bit more room.' Sawyer says: 'I never thought I would sell it, to be honest with you. It has three bedrooms, and that is too small to have both of my children back, potentially in the future with their partners, and my family to stay.' The decision to sell has not been popular with every member of his family. 'My daughter is still not talking to me since I told her I am selling it. She'll get over it eventually.' The cottage is listed for sale with a guide price of £1.75m.
