First look: The Waldorf Astoria's shiny $2 billion renovation

First look: The Waldorf Astoria's shiny $2 billion renovation

Time Out6 days ago
After eight years behind scaffolding and a reported $2 billion restoration, the Waldorf Astoria New York is nearly ready for its next curtain call. The Art Deco icon at 301 Park Avenue, which was once the tallest and largest hotel in the world, is reopening this fall with just 375 oversized rooms and suites (down from more than 1,400), a sleek new look and a reverence for its storied past.
During a recent hard-hat tour, I tiptoed past dust sheets and dangling chandeliers for a sneak peek at the reincarnated legend. Even before the final polish, the transformation is jaw-dropping. The soaring lobby has been restored to its original 1931 proportions, with gleaming marble underfoot, hand-restored murals overhead and sightlines that feel grander and more open than ever. The iconic 'Wheel of Life' mosaic shines once again and, just where they belong, guests will spot the gilded Queen Victoria clock and Cole Porter's Steinway piano.
Gone are the office cubicles and corporate carpet vibes of the past. In their place are creamy marble floors, silver-leaf ceilings and custom Pierre-Yves Rochon furnishings—plus thoughtful modern details in every room, from through-closet luggage storage to dedicated bar setups.
The Waldorf's comeback hasn't been quick or linear. Originally opened in 1931 by hotelier Lucius Boomer after the demolition of the original Fifth Avenue location, the property became a hub for galas, diplomats and cultural icons—from Marilyn Monroe and Eartha Kitt to Queen Elizabeth and every U.S. president from Hoover to Obama. In 2017, the hotel closed for its extensive overhaul, converting the top floors into private residences while Hilton retained management. Now under Dajia Insurance Group, the hotel returns with fresh ownership, new vision and its old glamour fully intact.
The culinary program alone makes a strong case for a visit. Later this month, the revitalized Peacock Alley returns as a gilded cocktail bar led by PDT's Jeff Bell. The two-story flagship Lex Yard, from Gramercy Tavern's Michael Anthony, will serve seasonal American fare in a glowing space by AvroKO that nods to the hotel's secret train platform below. A third venue, Yoshoku, helmed by Ry Nitzkowski, offers a playful Japanese twist on brasserie dining.
Room bookings open Monday, September 1. Every category starts at nearly 600 square feet and is decked in subtle hues of mint and mauve, accented with deco-inspired light fixtures and plush, contemporary touches. Other draws include a 30,000-square-foot spa, 43,000 square feet of restored event space and a Library Lounge check-in area that replaces the old front desk with a serene welcome zone.

Inside Pedro Pascal's life from rumoured Game of Thrones romance to JK Rowling controversy

He is one of the most popular actors today Pedro Pascal is set to take on one of his biggest roles to date when the latest iteration of Marvel's Fantastic Four arrives in cinemas. ‌ That is saying something considering the actor's recent roles include appearing one of the biggest shows in the world and one of the most popular Star Wars spin-offs. Pascal's latest role sees him take on the character of comic book hero Reed Richards. ‌ It is a part that is being tipped to take over Robert Downey Jr's Tony Stark as the leader of the Avengers. What that really entails, fans will have to wait until July 25 when the film is released on the big screen around the UK. ‌ But who is Pedro Pascal? What was his early career like that got him where he is today and what has been reported about dating rumours regarding the actor? Here's all you need to know. Who is Pedro Pascal? Full name, José Pedro Balmaceda Pascal is a Chilean and American actor born on April 2, 1975. He has an older sister who is a film and TV producer, a younger brother and a younger sister who is an actress and transgender activist. ‌ Pascal has also been vocal in support for his sister and transgender community. He courted some controversy for comments in calling out Harry Potter author J.K Rowling. Posting on Instagram, he referred to her as a 'heinous loser' for her views on the topic. Earlier in his life, hIs parents were listed as enemies of the state by the Pinochet regime in Chile when they took power and the family eventually fled Chile when he was nine months old. The family initially received asylum in Denmark before relocating to the US and Pedro would grow up in Texas and then California. He studied acting at the Orange County School of the Arts and New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, graduating in 1997. ‌ What was Pedro Pascal's early career like? Pedro Pascal refers to the time early in his career as his 'give up' years. Believing if he hadn't made it past the age of 29 then the industry was not for him, he came close to quitting a number of times. He waited tables to make money and said the dog he owned at the time saved his life. However, whenever he told friends and family he was close to quitting they would . His older sister says they knew he wanted to act from when Pedro was four years old and was too good to give up. The difficulty of this time was expounded by the death of his mother Veronica. He ended up chasing his stage name to Pascal, in honour of her and as he thought it was easier to pronounce for Americans than his paternal name of Balmaceda. ‌ While he earned a number of small roles in TV and film from 1999, it wasn't until 2014 when cast as Oberyn Martell where he made a huge impression on audiences around the world. Appearing in seven episodes for the show's fourth season, his arrival, presence and shocking death scene made a massive impact and proved to be a crucial career breakthrough. He has since become one of the most popular actors working today. Not only with the roles that he earns but with behind the scenes stories told by his colleagues. According to Vanity Fair, his nicknames include Pepelo, Pipi, Pedders, Peds, Pedg and even Pepsi. Those roles however have included the lead in Netflix series Narcos as well as Star Wars series The Mandalorian and HBO's The Last of US. He has also featured in films such as Wonder Woman 1984, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and Gladiator II. ‌ This year, alongside Fantastic Four he will also feature in modern western Eddington as well as romantic comedy Materialists opposite Dakota Johnson. With his recent success, Parade magazine estimates his net worth at around $10 million. Does Pedro Pascal struggle with anxiety? Pedro Pascal has been vocal about his struggles with anxiety. It is something he has said he has dealt with since he was a child. In an interview with co-star Bella Ramsey while the pair were promoting The Last of Us, he told them how developed the habit of keeping a hand on his stomach, usually while walking the red carpet and having his pictures taken as a coping mechanism. ‌ His fellow castmates have also been seen helping him with this, as fellow Fantastic Four star Vanessa Kirby was spotted several times holding his hand during public appearances to help him. Who is Pedro Pascal rumoured to be dating? Pedro Pascal also his dating life seemingly under wraps. This of course has not stopped the star from being subject of many rumours. These include links between him and Game of Thrones co-star Lena Headey. Neither commented on the links and Headey has since gotten married. On a Reddit AMA, Pascal said of her: "'She is so funny and so smart, such a good person, a good friend and a good mother, I think everyone on that set and anyone who comes in contact with her develops an instant crush. Talk about male or female, you're going to get a crush on her easy.' Earlier this year, Pascal was spotted out in Los Angeles with Friends star Jennifer Aniston with some wondering if the pair were an item. However, Pascal revealed during The Last of Us season two premiere that they were just going to dinner with mutual friends.

What happened to Sylvanian Drama on TikTok? The legal fight over controversial viral clips explained

Social media account has frequently gone viral for its darkly comedic skits featuring Calico Critters TOY BATTLE What happened to Sylvanian Drama on TikTok? The legal fight over controversial viral clips explained Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A VIRAL TikTok account that featured toys getting drunk, doing drugs and committing violence is reportedly at the centre of a legal battle. Sylvanian Drama, launched by Irish content creator Thea Von Engelbrechten, is being sued by Japanese company Epoch. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Epoch is suing Sylvanian Drama for infringing its copyright The social media account, which has frequently gone viral for its darkly comedic skits featuring the small toys, mysteriously went quiet this year after it landed in legal hot water with the toys' maker. It is now being reported that Sylvanian Drama, which has 2.5 million followers on TikTok and 1 million on Instagram, is being sued for copyright infringement, trademark infringement and unfair competition. Why is the lawsuit only being reported now? Epoch's lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York on April 7, initially went unnoticed but drew attention last week when some outlets reported on the situation. It came after reporters noticed months of silence from the account. The lawsuit, first reported by The Irish Independent, added that the site also uses a copyrighted image as Sylvanian Drama's social media profile picture. CCTV captures moment toy-loving boy crawls into claw machine The company claims that Thea Von Engelbrechten has been 'doubling her efforts to exploit Epoch's copyrights and trademarks for her own commercial gain' despite the company's attempts to work the issue out amicably. Sylvanian Families, also known as Calico Critters in the United States and Canada, are felt dolls in the shape of cute, anthropomorphized animals. They were first released in Japan in 1985. How did Sylvanian Drama become so popular? The creatures range from bunnies and kittens to squirrels and more, all with wide, black eyes and tiny clothing. The videos on Sylvanian Drama, all of which feature Calico Critters, often rack up millions of views each. Von Engelbrechten began posting Sylvanian Drama videos in 2021, when she was a 19-year-old multimedia student at Dublin City University. She told The Tab in a 2023 interview that her videos were meant to parody shows like 'Gossip Girl' and 'Pretty Little Liars.' 'I'm always surprised that I'm not already canceled for the stuff that I do,' she said. 'I don't mean any harm and also … a lot of the issues that I joke about are problems in my own life. 'There's a lot of stuff about weight and dieting and people struggling with that, and that's all just me joking about myself. So I'm not making fun of anyone.' Inspiration for content As reported by the BBC, the court document states that in an interview with influencer marketing company Fohr, Von Engelbrechten said her inspiration for the storylines came from "cringey TV shows and early 2000s comedy". She added: "I'm also really inspired by my cats because they are extremely sassy and self-obsessed and can be so cute, but they also have no morals when it comes to killing other animals. 'I try to embody that with the Sylvanians." Asked why she thought her videos were so popular she told Fohr: "Maybe it's because it's coming from the voice of a 22-year-old who struggles with the same things as [they do]. 'I have a lot of storylines about insecure people, diet culture, toxic men, and sustainability, which I think other girls my age are also thinking a lot about." Do you have a Sylvanian Families toy worth up to £500 in your house? Anyone who grew up in the 80s will remember the cute Sylvanian Families toys - and some could now fetch you a pretty penny on eBay. The furry animals come in neat family sets (mum and dad, son and daughter), all with old-fashioned outfits, jobs and homes. The cute characters were first introduced in the UK back in 1985, after being designed by Japanese firm Epoch. And it seems like the older and rarer your models, the more they might now be worth online. Last year, a collector sold a rare Japanese doll from 2003 for a whopping £500 - almost five times its auction start price of £99. Another vintage Sylvanian teddy bear from the 1980s sold for £456. A date has been set for August 14 for a pre-trial conference. This is when legal teams from both sides will meet to explore settlement options or prepare the case for trial. Von Engelbrechten and Epoch have yet to respond to press requests for comment.

‘I swam past a small village in Kent and knew I had to move there'

Mark Sawyer first set eyes on the small Kent village which would become his home from the Channel. It was 2006 and he was swimming from England to France in a team relay with two others. 'I distinctly remember the captain of the boat saying, 'There's St Margarets, it's a really pretty village '. I saw it from the water for the first time.' The 56-year-old and his ex-partner had determined that their second home would be in the east of the country, as they eschewed Devon and Cornwall. Then, on a trip to Kent in 2008, they drove through the village. Sawyer says: 'We saw this house, at the end of the sea promenade, and just fell in love with it. There was no For Sale sign nor evidence it was on the market. It didn't even tick any of the boxes that we had set ourselves.' But it was love at first sight. The couple liked the property so much that Sawyer paid £20k to the estate agent to take it off the market immediately. They paid £800k for the three-bedroom house, Mermaid Cottage, and Sawyer says he has spent in the region of £1m renovating it – including buying extra land to cultivate a garden. Mermaid Cottage was built in 1929 in Art Deco style. Playwright Noel Coward bought it after the Second World War, and lived there for seven years. Guests at the house included actress Katharine Hepburn and Ian Fleming, the author of James Bond, who later took over custodianship of the house, and wrote it into his 1955 Bond thriller Moonraker. 'I'm a massive Bond fan. For me that was the cherry on the cake,' says semi-retired Sawyer, who works in private equity. 'Most people say when we're down there: squint and you could be in the Mediterranean,' he adds. 'In the winter, the bay is so much quieter. You sit there with the log-burning stove roaring with a storm blowing outside. You're immersed in nature. The only land you can see from our living room is France. 'It gets into your soul a bit. You feel that you are in the middle of nowhere – but you're not.' His partner, Lara Jewitt, is a former Chelsea Flower Show gold medallist, and the garden emulates Derek Jarman's Prospect Cottage. In 2014, the couple bought land from the council to develop a garden, something which became a lockdown project. But they still wanted more garden space. 'We developed every square inch down there, and we just wanted a bit more room.' Sawyer says: 'I never thought I would sell it, to be honest with you. It has three bedrooms, and that is too small to have both of my children back, potentially in the future with their partners, and my family to stay.' The decision to sell has not been popular with every member of his family. 'My daughter is still not talking to me since I told her I am selling it. She'll get over it eventually.' The cottage is listed for sale with a guide price of £1.75m.
