Apple Boosts iPhone Trade-In Discounts in China to Reignite Lagging Sales
On Friday, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) announced that the company is now offering additional trade-in discounts for new iPhones in China until June 18, 2025.
This initiative aims to stimulate demand in a crucial market where the company has faced increasing competition and declining sales. Apple has increased the trade-in value for old iPhones. For instance, the iPhone 15 Pro Max now has a trade-in value of up to 5,700 Chinese yuan, an increase from the previous 5,625 yuan.

A brand new iPhone 15 Pro Max starts at 7,999 yuan in China. The iPhone 15 Pro model's trade-in value has also risen to up to 4,750 yuan from 4,725 yuan. While these increases are relatively minor (~$11 more for an iPhone 15 Pro Max and $5 for an iPhone 15 Pro), they signal Apple's ongoing efforts to boost sales in the world's second-largest economy.
Apple's market position in China has been challenged by robust local competition from companies like Xiaomi and Huawei. In Q1 2025, Apple's iPhone shipments in China fell by 8% year-on-year, and its smartphone market share in the country decreased from 15% to 13%, according to Canalys data. This follows earlier direct price cuts by Apple in January 2025, including up to 500 yuan off the iPhone 16 Pro during the Lunar New Year shopping season.
Additionally, despite President Trump's temporary pause on most tariffs on China, discussions persist regarding potential special duties on chips and other electronics. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) currently manufactures ~90% of its iPhones in China through its partner Foxconn. However, the company has been exploring diversifying production to India, although Trump has expressed that he would prefer Apple to manufacture devices in the US.

It's taken a while, but after various early access betas, Mecha Break will finally launch this July. As with all early access releases, the initial response to Mecha Break was pretty mixed. From network issues to other problems, fans complained, and it seems that those complaints were listened to and seemingly acted upon. That's the point, really. The whole purpose of releasing your game early, especially a multiplayer one, is to find out what the issues are going to be before launch and then fix them. Obviously, you can get pretty far on your own, figuring out the main issues before releasing a game to the public, but early access releases will always help a multiplayer game find its feet eventually. After all, this is a high-speed mecha shooting game, and that's a tough thing to get right, especially as games are already an abstract ruleset in and of themselves. Adding mecha to that, which are also an abstracted ruleset of their own in terms of functionality, doesn't just double the complexity of the game's design, it squares it. In this instance, Mecha Break is also a high-speed and quite aerial mecha game, and that's a lot to balance out before release. Thankfully, the game is using proper Japanese mecha designers for the game's mecha, although they have been stylized somewhat. In any case, Mecha Break is now almost here, and I am very curious to see how it does. The mecha styling and high-speed gameplay make me think this will find its market mostly in Asia, but I hope Western gamers give it a chance, too. iPhone iOS 26: Here's The Design Change Everyone Wants To Know About
Apple's big software extravaganza, WWDC25, starts on Monday morning, June 9. All the rumors point to a complete new look, the biggest design overhaul in more than a decade. So, what will the app icons look like? App icons on the iPhone Those app icons have gone through several evolutions already. In the first iPhone software released in 2007, the icons were square, with curved edges and a design that made them look 3D, as though they were slightly domed. Then, with iOS 7 in 2015, Apple ditched these icons for a layered, flatter look. And the shape of the square subtly changed. For the new update, iOS 16 as it's thought it will be called, there have been plenty of rumors about how the app icons — after all, the essential way to navigate a smartphone — will transform again. Many have suggested the icons will become circular. That makes a kind of sense, as the new OS is believed to have drawn inspiration from the Apple Vision Pro's visionOS software. However, a new report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has news about exactly what the app icons will look like. 'While there has been speculation that the app icons will be round to match the style on the Apple Watch and Vision Pro, the shape is staying largely the same on the iPhone and iPad,' he says. 'Largely' may be the key word. It sounds to me that the icons will remain essentially square with curved corners, but the shape of the corners will change, again. The move from iOS 6 to iOS 7 meant that the straight lines turned to curves further in, that is, the corners were, well, curvier. This time, perhaps the corners will change in the other direction. What's clear, though, is that the expectation of circular icons is rejected by Gurman. This makes sense to me: for circular icons sit nicely together, you could choose a galaxy of apps like you have on the Apple Watch, but that wouldn't work for the iPhone. Every mock-up I've seen with round apps jarred for me. Everything will be revealed in a matter of hours.
