England star Jess Carter targeted by racist abuse during Euros

Yahoo20-07-2025
England star Jess Carter says she has been the victim of racist abuse online during the UEFA Women's Euros in Switzerland.
The Lionesses defender, who has 49 England caps, said she will be "taking a step back from social media and leaving it to a team to deal with".
In an Instagram post, the 27-year-old player said: "From the start of the tournament, I have experienced a lot of racial abuse. Whilst I feel every fan is entitled to their opinion on performance and result, I don't agree or think it's ok to target someone's appearance or race."
Carter said she was stepping back from social media to "protect myself in a bid to keep my focus on helping the team anyway I can".
She added: "Hopefully speaking out will make the people writing this abuse think twice so that others won't have to deal with it."
Carter also said that England have made some "historic changes with the Lionesses squad" that she was "so proud" of, and she hopes that by speaking out about racial abuse "it will make another positive change for all".
The Football Association leadership has condemned the "abhorrent abuse" against Carter and has contacted UK police about it.
FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said in a statement: "Our priority is Jess and giving her all the support she needs. We strongly condemn those responsible for this disgusting racism.
"As soon as we were made aware of the racist abuse Jess received, we immediately contacted UK police. They are in touch with the relevant social media platform, and we are working with police to ensure those responsible for this hate crime are brought to justice."
The Lionesses said in a statement: "We stand with Jess and all Lionesses players past and present who have suffered racism.
"No one should have to endure such vile abuse, be that in football or any walk of life."
They added: "Those behind this online poison must be held accountable."
Carter has started all four of England's games at the tournament.
The defending champions face Italy on Tuesday night in Geneva in the Euros semi-finals. If they win and reach the final, they will play either Germany or Spain, who face each other on Wednesday.
The Lionesses also said that until now, they have chosen to take the knee before matches.
"It is clear we and football need to find another way to tackle racism," they said.
England to remain standing before semi-final
The Lionesses said they have agreed as a squad to remain standing before kick-off in the match against Italy.
"We hope the game can come together to see what more can be done."
Kneeling, a symbolic anti-racism gesture, came to prominence in 2016 when NFL player Colin Kaepernick knelt in protest during the United States national anthem and became more widespread during the Black Lives Matter movement.

Wrexham signs former England defender Conor Coady from Leicester

WREXHAM, Wales (AP) — Wrexham signed defender Conor Coady from Leicester as it reshapes its squad to cope with promotion to the second-tier Championship. Coady brings 198 games' worth of Premier League experience and 10 appearances for the English national team. He was part of England's squad at the last World Cup in 2022 but didn't play. 'I'm over the moon. It's a special day, I'll be honest," the 32-year-old defender said in a club statement. 'We've all seen what the club has done over the past few years and for me to join is really special and I can't wait to meet the boys and get started.' Coady arrives for an undisclosed fee from Leicester, one of Wrexham's opponents in the Championship in the upcoming season. He signed a two-year contract with an option for a further year. The club made internationally famous by its celebrity owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney and the 'Welcome to Wrexham" documentary series is doing things differently after returning to the second tier for the first time since the 1980s. As well as staging a preseason tour of Australia and New Zealand, Wrexham has parted company with the experienced Paul Mullin and Steven Fletcher, and signed players like United States international Damion Downs. Wrexham's Championship campaign begins at Southampton on Aug. 9. ___ AP soccer:

Teen detained over Carnival zombie knife attack

A teenager has been sentenced to 18 years detention after carrying out a "brutal" zombie knife attack at the Notting Hill Carnival last year. Rumarni Tuitt, 19, from Walthamstow, north-east London, stabbed 18-year-old Kamani Spooner with the 12in (30cm)-long weapon on the evening of 26 August 2024. After a two week trial at the Old Bailey he was found guilty of attempted murder, having earlier pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article. Sentencing him, Judge Judy Khan KC said it was a "brutal and wholly unjustifiable attack" and that there could be no justification for carrying a knife of that nature on to crowded streets, still less to Carnival. Judge Khan said it was not the first time Tuitt had travelled to the event armed with a "fearsome weapon", and on this occasion had used it to "devastating effect". "This was a particularly serious offence committed in the heart of Europe's biggest street festival," she said. The judge quoted a police statement saying that every knife-related crime had a significant impact on the victim and created "widespread fear and anxiety within the community". Warning: This article features distressing details The trial heard that Tuitt sliced open the victim's stomach with the zombie knife and that four of the five stab injuries he inflicted were life-threatening. There was no evidence to suggest that the victim and the defendant knew each other, the prosecution said. The attack had occurred in daylight on a summer's evening in Canal Way, off Ladbroke Grove, and was witnessed by a police officer who had noticed the defendant appearing agitated and having an argument with another man. The officer then saw the defendant reach into his waistband and "plunge his knife towards a group of people". Tuitt ran off and tried to dispose of the weapon by throwing it on the ground, but it was recovered by police. After spending a month in hospital the victim was able to make a statement to police. Mr Spooner said that he remembered towards the end of Carnival he had seen people around him fighting and throwing punches, before he was hit in the back. He then looked down to see that his intestines were hanging out and had to put his hand over them and run away. 'Harm and distress' At the sentence hearing, prosecutor Mark Paltenghi said the defendant had also been arrested for possession of a knife at Notting Hill Carnival in 2023. On that occasion Tuitt had become involved in an argument with a member of the public who was walking his dog and had produced a large Rambo knife and "swung it back and forth", but had been detained by police officers. He was convicted for that offence in June last year and given a community order which was still in place when the attempted murder occurred, the court heard. In mitigation Tuitt's barrister, Sheryl Nwosu, said the defendant was "genuinely sorry for the hurt, the harm and the distress he has caused". The defendant had been attending Carnival with relatives and friends and had the knife "defensively", she said. Tuitt, of Sutherland Road, Walthamstow, was given a concurrent sentence of one year for possession of a bladed article. Three more Barcelona stars come out in support of Marc-Andre ter Stegen as captain

After Frenkie de Jong came out in support of Marc-Andre ter Stegen as captain of Barcelona, a string of his teammates have followed. Ter Stegen is currently engaged in something of a silent battle with the club, who are unhappy with his stance on his future. Manager Hansi Flick stepped back from the matter earlier this week, explaining that he would be putting the matter to a vote amongst the players, following talk that Barcelona could remove the captaincy from ter Stegen. After Barcelona beat FC Seoul 7-3 though, de Jong was clear and decisive in stating that ter Stegen was their leader, and Ferran Torres followed suit. Raphinha – 'Ter Stegen has always helped me' One of the surprises of last season was that Raphinha was selected as a vice-captain, and became a vocal part of the side. The Brazilian had only positive things to say about him to Sport. 'Yes, in my opinion, but in the end, it's no longer something that depends on us. Since I arrived, he's always helped me, and he was already captain. In football, there are hierarchies, and we have to respect them. For me, even if he isn't, he'll still be a special person. Whether there are votes or not is a question for the manager or the president.' Gavi – 'It's a dream to wear the armband' Meanwhile Gavi captained Barcelona in the second half in South Korea, and earned special praise from Flick after the game. The 20-year-old told RAC1 (via Marca) it was a motivating factor. 'I felt very proud to be able to wear the armband. It's a dream and it motivates me even more. I don't know if I'll be able to play this season, because you have to respect the hierarchy, but I have the dream of wearing the Barca armband. I would love it; it's something every Barca fan thinks about.' Gavi also affirmed the position that ter Stegen was the captain of the side. 'I think we'll vote. Marc is the team's first captain, and in the end, it's the players who vote.' Image via FC Barcelona Pau Cubarsi: 'We're happy with ter Stegen' Meanwhile Pau Cubarsi also came out and declared to TV3 that he was a positive impact on the team. 'We don't decide anything. For now, Marc is on the team. He's our captain, our guide and our main support. He's with us, we're very happy and we hope that's the case.' Ter Stegen to win battle with club? Barcelona may well have intended on threatening ter Stegen with the captaincy if he does not sign off on his medical report to allow them to activate the emergency injury rule, or even if he does not accept a departure. However the statements from his teammates suggest that President Joan Laporta or Director of Football Deco risk upsetting the dressing room if they do so.
