'Bring it on!' Asyraf Wajdi tells parents planning to sue over MRSM expulsions

KUALA LUMPUR: Several parents of students expelled from Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) over bullying cases are planning to take legal action against Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) and its chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
The matter was revealed by Asyraf in a Facebook post today.
"I have been informed that some parents, whose children were expelled from MRSM due to bullying cases, are planning to sue me and Mara.
"I say, 'Bring it on!' My priority is to protect the safety of the majority of students, not a handful who act like thugs. #YouTouchYouGo."
The post has since drawn attention online, with many netizens voicing support for Mara and Asyraf's firm stance against bullying in its institutions.
User Fathiah Ab Rauf said: "If that's the kind of upbringing at home, it's no surprise the child ended up the way they did and was expelled.
"Good parenting doesn't mean justifying, agreeing with, or defending everything a child does.
"Wrong is still wrong - correct them with discipline.
"Take a lesson from the story of Anakku Sazali, where everything fell apart because of excessive pampering."
Another user, Amirul Iman Anuar, said: "File a countersuit against the parents of the student.
"Claim back all the expenses that Mara has spent on their child, such as meals in the hostel and other costs."
On June 27, Asyraf said that six MRSM students in Terengganu, who were found to have bullied a Form Two student and left him injured in the latest bullying case involving the institution, had been expelled.
It was reported that another six MRSM students in Melaka were expelled with immediate effect after being found involved in a bullying incident.

Akmal plans Penang trip to ‘teach' apek how to hang the Jalur Gemilang properly

UMNO Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh said he would visit a Penang hardware shop on Monday after its owner, Feng Jin Zhen, was filmed holding the Malaysian flag upside down. Although Feng claimed it was unintentional while measuring a pole, Akmal dismissed the explanation, calling the men involved 'traitors' and inviting supporters to join him at the shop to 'teach' them how to hang the flag properly, using the term ah pek for the two elderly Chinese men. 'I'm coming this Monday, and I want to invite all my friends from across Malaysia to come to this ah pek's shop at 12 noon. 'We'll go to his shop on the condition that we bring the Malaysian flag so we can teach these two ah pek how to properly put up the Malaysian flag. 'So, you two ah pek, wait for me to come and teach you how to put up the Malaysian flag,' Akmal said in a Facebook post. A 20-second video of a man holding the Malaysian flag upside down went viral after being posted on Facebook, later shared by Akmal, urging government action against them. The Merlimau assemblyman sarcastically questioned if the men were PWDs, referencing a past DAP claim that a similar flag incident involved a disabled person. Police are investigating the case under multiple laws, including the Emblems and Names Act, the Minor Offences Act, and the Communications and Multimedia Act. —Aug 10, 2025 Main image: Free Malaysia Today

Man arrested over upside-down Jalur Gemilang

GEORGE TOWN: Police have arrested a 59-year-old man in connection with the display of the Jalur Gemilang flown upside down at a shop in Kepala Batas, following reports made across the country. Acting Penang police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the man, the shop owner, was detained last night. He said a total of 16 police reports had been received nationwide regarding the incident, with 12 of them lodged in Penang and four in other states. "The 59-year-old shop owner was arrested last night. "The investigation paper will be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor tomorrow with a recommendation for prosecution," he said in a statement today. Alwi said the case is being investigated under Section 5 of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Alwi said police viewed the matter seriously and would not hesitate to take firm action against those found guilty. He reminded the public to respect the Jalur Gemilang as a symbol of national sovereignty. It was reported yesterday that police had launched an investigation after a video showing a man hoisting the Jalur Gemilang upside down went viral on social media today. The video, posted on Facebook around 12.30pm, showed the man raising the national flag incorrectly while another individual recorded the incident. The complainant, who spotted the video, suspected the incident took place in Kepala Batas and lodged a police report at the Kepala Batas police station.

Man investigated for Zara Qairina post on social media

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating an individual for allegedly spreading false information on social media about the late Zara Qairina Mahathir. In a statement today, MCMC said the man was summoned to the Cheras District Police Headquarters yesterday, where investigators seized a mobile phone and a SIM card before recording his statement. The commission said the Facebook post in question contained false claims and touched on 3R sensitivities, race, religion and royalty, with the potential to cause public confusion and disrupt ongoing police investigations into the case. The matter is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000, a jail term of up to two years, or both, upon conviction. MCMC urged the public to allow the investigation to proceed without interference and to be cautious about sharing unverified or speculative content online. "Spreading unverified information risks hurting the feelings of the victim's family, goes against ethical values, and can interfere with the course of justice," it added.
