Guernsey set for 'massive' T20 World Cup qualifier

BBC News18-06-2025
"It's very surreal when I read articles and hear people tell me we're four games away from the World Cup proper," Guernsey Cricket manager Rob Thomson admits. The Channel Island side are preparing for their first-ever appearance in the final round of qualifying for the 2026 T20 World Cup.They will travel to the Netherlands next month for Europe's regional final, a round-robin tournament against the hosts, Scotland, Italy and Channel Island rivals Jersey - with the top two sides progressing to next year's showpiece in India and Sri Lanka.Ranked 37th in the International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings, Guernsey are behind 32nd-placed Italy, 28th-placed Jersey and favourites Scotland and the Netherlands, who are rated 13th and 14th respectively."I think you have to recognise the step up for our lads in particular is huge," Thomson, whose side qualified for the tournament after winning their sub-regional qualifier last summer, told BBC Sport."We're the lowest ranked side of the five in the competition, so that tells its own story. The gap between the sub-regional qualification process that we went through last year to this stage is massive."You're going from playing on artificial wickets against lower-ranked European nations to playing on grass against at least two, you could argue three, maybe three-and-a-half professional sides."So it's a massive step up, but T20, as everyone knows, is a leveller."
Despite not having any professionals in their ranks, the Guernsey side - drawn up from the island's approximate 60,000 population - know they can beat sides at this level. They recently defeated Jersey and could have beaten them for a second time but for a dramatic final over in which Guernsey fell narrowly short in their run chase.Guernsey also defeated Denmark - who regularly reach this stage of the competition - last summer on their way to qualification. And unlike some other nations, the island's small size geographically helps them come together - they train with each other every week and have an almost club-like bond."We play a lot of cricket together in the green shirt and it's definitely a massive strength for us and something in our favour," Thomson says."Watching the lads, certainly the weekend before last when we were in Jersey, it's so noticeable how fluid it is when they're out there on the field in terms of the guys knowing where they're fielding, they know what the plans are for each bowler."(Captain) Ollie (Nightingale) has that all set up so perfectly - they walk out from off the boundary on to the pitch and it just looks very, very cohesive, which is no small feat."
And while Guernsey may lack players at the top level, they do have a lot of international experience - Nightingale, Ben Ferbrache, Matt Stokes, Josh Butler and Zak Damarell have been part of the island side for many years, playing all around the world.Added to that experience are promising new faces such as teenage bowlers Charlie Forshaw and Harry Johnson as Guernsey bid to cause an upset and reach the finals."T20 cricket, you get a few things in your favour, you win a good toss, you never know, so we go there with eyes open," Thomson says."It's a massive challenge, but I know the lads are really looking forward to it, to putting their skills on display at that top table and at a level that we've never played at before."If we come back with a win or two, we'll have certainly had a fantastic week."

Gary Neville calls out Jamie Carragher's 'disrespect' during a testy exchange on Monday Night Football - after Liverpool legend burst out laughing at his 'manager to watch'

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher were caught in an awkward, testy exchange on the first Monday Night Football of the new Premier League season, after the former Liverpool star burst out laughing at his colleague's 'manager to watch' this season. The duo made offered their thoughts on how the season could unfold on the Sky Sports show after watching the first weekend of top flight football, which saw defending champions Liverpool win 4-2 over Bournemouth, Manchester City thrash Wolves 4-0 and Arsenal claim a narrow 1-0 victory over Manchester United. Carragher predicted his old team Liverpool to retain the title under Arne Slot this season, while Neville tipped Arsenal to finally top the table after three consecutive runner-up finishes. Despite disagreeing on the title winners, the pair were amicable until Neville selected Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim as his 'manager to watch' this season, which prompted Carragher to roar with laughter. 'Why you laughing, it's disrespect,' Neville said as Carragher was chuckling. 'You pick the Man United manager every year,' the former Liverpool star responded, pointing to the board of selections. 'You picked three (managers) last year and one of them was (Erik) ten Hag.' "Why you laughing? It's disrespect" 😡 "You pick a Man Utd manager every year on that" 😂 @GNev2 was not happy with @Carra23 's reaction to his Manager to Watch selection 😅 — Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) August 18, 2025 Neville replied: 'It's disrespectful, the reason last year is a similar reason to this. Ten Hag because I knew last season if he started badly he'd be under massive pressure. Similarly, Ruben Amorim - there's probably going to be no in between here - if he starts off badly and they're in 13th, 14th by October, November, he's going to be under massive pressure. 'He's the Manchester United manager, he has to deliver in these first few months of the season. And I think he will outperform.' Carragher, nodding to Neville's prediction that Man United will finish in a Champions League place, interrupted: 'Outperforming what? You've got them to finish fourth.' 'Exactly,' Neville replied. 'I know you're not sure about him and you wrote your article the other day saying that you think he's not that good...' The former United star's remark prompted a quick back and forth which saw the two pundits talk over each other, with Carragher immediately questioning, 'Did I? You'll have to read it.' Neville then asked: 'Well, what was your article about?' 'It was about the two managers, (Arsenal boss Mikel) Arteta and Amorim. Amorim would be delighted if he was in Arteta's position in three or four years.' The tetchy squabble ended Monday Night Football's predictions section, with Carragher picking Crystal Palace's Oliver Glasner as his 'manager to watch'. The pair both acknowledged that Man City were also one of three contenders to be crowned champions, along with Arsenal and Liverpool. 'I couldn't separate them, so I have gone with the team I have gone with for the past three years, feeling that they are reliable, solid and consistent, which I think is important,' Neville said of his Arsenal prediction. 'They are consistently getting high points totals and finishing second to great teams, I think they have improved themselves, I think [Viktor] Gyokeres will do well for Arsenal. 'I think they have the right material at the front of the pitch and I think Gyokeres will.' Neville suggested Man United's league form will benefit from not being in European competition this season, which he believes could give them the edge over the likes of Chelsea, Aston Villa, Newcastle and Tottenham. 'Last season I remembering watching Chelsea and no-one had them, but I thought I saw something when they played Man City and thought "that's a good team". 'When I watched them yesterday I thought the performance was very good. 'I think they will get a goalkeeper and with those players up front, with the free weeks they have got with no Champions League or Europa League, I think Man United will surprise some people. 'Maybe it is a little bit of bias in who I support, I am not sure Chelsea will find it as easy with the World Club Cup, European games and I think Man United will sneak in'. Carragher, however, backed Chelsea to complete the top four and secure qualification to the Champions League. Both pundits agreed Newcastle would finish in the top six, with Carragher backing them to finish fifth ahead of Tottenham, while Neville placed the Magpies sixth behind Chelsea. The Liverpool legend aimed another jibe at his fellow pundit by labelling Man United as a 'surprise' European contender, while Neville - who remains banned from the City Ground - joked he might be allowed back in after naming Nottingham Forest as his pick.
