Iconic yellow chomper Pac-Man turns 45 with doughnuts, cookbook, more
Pac-Man's iconic yellow pie-shaped chomper turns 45 today.
The game was officially released on May 22, 1980 in Japanese arcades before launching in the United States in October 1980, according to the Pac-Man website.
Transcending generations and new advancements in technology, Pac-Man is the best-selling arcade video game ever, according to the National Museum of Play.
Bandai Namco Entertainment America Inc., the maker of the game, said in a press release that it is commemorating the 45th anniversary of the game "with an unprecedented year-long campaign."
For now, though, there are a slew of ways fans can celebrate the game's birthday, from getting a Krispy Kreme doughnut to ordering the official Pac-Man cookbook.
Here's a look at how the iconic game's anniversary is being celebrated.
On May 22, Pac-Man's anniversary, Krispy Kreme is offering customers a dozen Original Glazed doughnuts for just 25 cents with the purchase of any dozen at regular price, the company said in a news release earlier this month.
The chain also announced a new doughnut collection in honor of Pac-Man.
The Krispy Kreme x Pac-Man Collection features three new doughnuts in a custom Pac-Man game dozen box. The collection has been available since May 12 for a limited time at participating Krispy Kreme shops.
Pac-Man is known for eating, after all.
"PAC-MAN: The Official Cookbook" was released on May 13 and includes more than 60 recipes inspired by the game, according to its description.
"From energy-filled snacks to super-filling dinners, these colorful, creative recipes will have you raring to get to the legendary level 256!" the book's description says.
The cookbook is available for purchase on Amazon for $29.99.
Celebrating the game's anniversary wouldn't be complete without a round or two.
While the game first launched in in-person arcades, it's been adapted for players in the modern age.
For the game's 30th anniversary in 2010, Google released a special Doodle — an alteration of the Google logo on its homepages.
The 30th anniversary Doodle is still available to play online now.
Bandai Namco Entertainment America Inc. is releasing a new game inspired by Pac-Man, and gamers can preorder it now.
The game, Shadow Labyrinth, is "a 2D action platformer and a genre-twisting alternate take on the iconic PAC-MAN," according to Bandai Namco.
It will be released on July 18, but can be preordered now on Steam, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo.

Nintendo denies Switch 2 report claiming that Japanese retailers are getting a bigger cut of each sale following a timely drop in stocks and shares
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Nintendo has publicly debunked a report claiming that the company is allowing Japanese retailers to earn more from each Nintendo Switch 2 console sold. While the Nintendo Switch 2 looks poised to be a success no matter how you shake it, Nintendo has taken some unconventional approaches to the launch of its new console. For example, a Japanese-only version of the console which is selling for 20,000 Yen less than the multi-language version. Even the Mario Kart World bundle is a bit of an unconventional choice, since the last Nintendo console to come bundled with a game at launch was the Wii back in 2006 (and even then, Wii Sports was only a pack-in after Reggie Fils-Amié fought for it). Just ahead of the Nintendo Switch 2 launching later this week, Bloomberg reported that Nintendo would be giving a bigger cut of every Nintendo Switch 2 sold to retailers. "Store operators will be able to make a gross margin of about 5% on each Switch 2 sold, higher than the informal industry standard of roughly 2%" the report said, adding "The decision will help bolster domestic retailers and ensure the new console is given prominent placement at outlets across the country." Around four hours later, Nintendo took to Twitter to debunk the rumour: "A news report related to the wholesale price of Nintendo Switch 2 in the Japanese market was published. We want to clarify that this report is not true. Nintendo does not disclose any information regarding business conditions with distribution and retail partners."While Nintendo is well known for not commenting on rumours, on Monday (when this report was published) Nintendo shares dropped which likely led the publisher to make a public statement about the report. Fact Check: Adam Sandler didn't testify against Sean 'Diddy' Combs, honestly
Claim: Actor Adam Sandler testified against Sean 'Diddy' Combs on or around May 30, 2025, during the rapper's sex-trafficking trial in New York City. Rating: In late May 2025, a claim (archived) circulated online that actor Adam Sandler testified against Sean "Diddy" Combs on or around May 30, 2025, during the rapper's sex-trafficking trial in New York City. One YouTube video, titled "1 MINUTE AGO: Adam Sandler Testifies In Court On Day 14 Of Diddy Trial," had more than 374,000 views at the time of this writing. The rumor also appeared on Facebook (archived), X (archived) and TikTok (archived) and Snopes readers searched our site to find out if it was true. However, the claim that Sandler testified against Combs in the music mogul's criminal trial was false. Court reports from entertainment and news outlets on May 30 — day 13 of the trial, when video narrations in the above posts said Sandler testified — made no mention of the actor. Sandler also did not feature in Getty Images photos or court sketches on this date. Day 14 of the trial, when some video titles and descriptions said the testimony took place, was on June 2, 2025, several days after the videos were published. A Google search also produced no evidence that Sandler testified at the trial. Snopes reached out to representatives for Sandler to ask if the actor had or would testify in the trial against Combs. We await their reply. The claim spread via numerous (archived) YouTube videos labeled "Altered or synthetic content." The videos also included disclaimers that they were for "entertainment and educational purposes only," both indicators that the content was fictional. One video (archived) that did not include the "altered or synthetic content" label (but did include the "entertainment and educational purposes only" disclaimer) falsely credited its claims to Inner City Press, an outlet that covers the Southern District Court of New York where Combs' trial was being held. This is not the first time we have debunked a claim falsely attributed to Inner City Press. We previously fact-checked its involvement in false reports that Usher had testified at Combs' trial. Combs faces multiple charges that include racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking. Combs has pleaded not guilty to all charges. Snopes has also previously investigated whether Wendy Williams and Samuel L. Jackson testified at the rapper's ongoing trial. 7 Diddy Trial Photos & High Res Pictures - Getty Images.
