Pac-Man's iconic yellow pie-shaped chomper turns 45 today. The game was officially released on May 22, 1980 in Japanese arcades before launching in the United States in October 1980, according to the Pac-Man website. Transcending generations and new advancements in technology, Pac-Man is the best-selling arcade video game ever, according to the National Museum of Play. Bandai Namco Entertainment America Inc., the maker of the game, said in a press release that it is commemorating the 45th anniversary of the game "with an unprecedented year-long campaign." For now, though, there are a slew of ways fans can celebrate the game's birthday, from getting a Krispy Kreme doughnut to ordering the official Pac-Man cookbook. Here's a look at how the iconic game's anniversary is being celebrated. On May 22, Pac-Man's anniversary, Krispy Kreme is offering customers a dozen Original Glazed doughnuts for just 25 cents with the purchase of any dozen at regular price, the company said in a news release earlier this month. The chain also announced a new doughnut collection in honor of Pac-Man. The Krispy Kreme x Pac-Man Collection features three new doughnuts in a custom Pac-Man game dozen box. The collection has been available since May 12 for a limited time at participating Krispy Kreme shops. Pac-Man is known for eating, after all. "PAC-MAN: The Official Cookbook" was released on May 13 and includes more than 60 recipes inspired by the game, according to its description. "From energy-filled snacks to super-filling dinners, these colorful, creative recipes will have you raring to get to the legendary level 256!" the book's description says. The cookbook is available for purchase on Amazon for $29.99. Celebrating the game's anniversary wouldn't be complete without a round or two. While the game first launched in in-person arcades, it's been adapted for players in the modern age. For the game's 30th anniversary in 2010, Google released a special Doodle — an alteration of the Google logo on its homepages. The 30th anniversary Doodle is still available to play online now. Bandai Namco Entertainment America Inc. is releasing a new game inspired by Pac-Man, and gamers can preorder it now. The game, Shadow Labyrinth, is "a 2D action platformer and a genre-twisting alternate take on the iconic PAC-MAN," according to Bandai Namco. "Fans unlocked the return of the fan-favorite Strawberry Glazed Doughnuts by helping Krispy Kreme achieve a 'high score' of giving away 45,000 free Original Glazed doughnuts between May 12-18 during Hot Light hours," the company said in a news release. The Strawberry Glazed Doughnut was introduced in 2020 and was last offered in August 2023, according to the chain. This will mark the fourth time Krispy Kreme has offered the doughnut, which features a "vibrant strawberry glaze with sweet strawberry flavor." The special doughnut will be available in-shop and for pickup or delivery via Krispy Kreme's app and website at participating shops. Krispy Kreme is tapping into sweet nostalgia to celebrate PAC-MAN 's 45th anniversary. In collaboration with Bandai Namco Entertainment America Inc., the beloved doughnut brand is launching a limited-edition PAC-MAN collection, along with a giveaway of free doughnuts, the company announced in a press release Monday. Beginning May 12, participating Krispy Kreme locations across the U.S. will offer three new PAC-MAN-themed doughnuts, all packaged in a custom, game-inspired dozen box. The collection includes the PAC-MAN Party Doughnut, filled with yellow buttercream-flavored icing, topped with celebration sprinkles and a PAC-MAN piece. Meanwhile, TEAM GHOST Doughnut is filled with chocolate Kreme, dipped in black icing, decorated like a maze, and finished with a Team Ghosts topper. The third item in the lineup is the Strawberry Power Berry Doughnut, which features strawberry-flavored Kreme, red icing, white sprinkles and a green icing leaf. "These all-new PAC-MAN doughnuts are sweetest in multi-player mode. So, press start on a dozen and chomp on a maze of flavors with family, friends and coworkers," Krispy Kreme Chief Growth Officer Dave Skena said in a statement. "Partnering with Bandai Namco and PAC-MAN is a new high score of sweetness." To mark the milestone, Krispy Kreme is also offering several celebratory deals. From May 12-18, guests can receive one free Original Glazed doughnut during Hot Light hours -- 7 to 9 a.m. and 5 to 7 p.m., or whenever the Hot Light is on -- with a limit of one per guest per day, in-shop or via drive-thru. If fans help Krispy Kreme reach its goal of 45,000 doughnuts given away, the doughnut and coffeehouse chain said it will bring back its popular Strawberry Glazed Doughnut, last offered in August 2023. From May 12-14, Krispy Kreme will also turn its Doughnut Dots into "Pac-Dots" and give away a free 10-count of Dots with the purchase of any dozen at regular price. Krispy Kreme plans to give away 45,000 free doughnuts, one of many ways its celebrating the beloved Pac-Man video game. From May 12 to May 18, anyone can get a free Original glazed doughnut when they visit a Krispy Kreme shop or drive-thru during Hot Light hours, the Charlotte-based doughnut chain said in a news release. The hot light, signaling that hot, fresh doughnuts are coming off the production line, is usually aglow from 7 to 9 a.m. and 5 to 7 p.m., though these hours vary by location. Free doughnuts are limited to one per person per day, and no purchase is necessary, Krispy Kreme said. The weeklong giveaway coincides with the 45th anniversary of Pac-Man. Krispy Kreme teamed up with Bandai Namco Entertainment America Inc., the company behind the classic arcade game, to launch the new Krispy Kreme x Pac-Mac collection.
