Abducted clerk rescued, hunt to nab culprits underway

Chatra: A 35-year-old clerk (Munshi) of a private construction company, who was abducted by armed criminals on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday from the site of an under-construction bridge, was rescued by the police on Monday.
Chatra SP Sumit Kumar Agarwal said Dharmendra Gupta was rescued from Hazaribag, but refused to divulge further details saying raids were underway arrest the kidnappers.
Gupta, police sources said, was abducted from the site of an under-construction bridge over Purvaiya River at Balbal under Giddhaur police station limits. The bridge is being built by a private company for the rural works department. The miscreants robbed two CCTV cameras, 14 mobile phones, two helmets and other items.
The miscreants, bike borne and armed, had hid their faces with towels, labours in the construction site told the police. At first, they dismantled the CCTV cameras and took away the mobiles and other belongings. They forced Gupta to sit on one of their bikes and drove off, the labours told the police on Saturday.
Superintendent of Police Sumit Kumar Agarwal said, "He has been recovered safely Hazaribag district. I can't say anything more at this moment as raids are ongoing in this regard."

DGP holds meet, reviews law & order situation ahead of Bakrid
Ranchi: State DGP Anurag Gupta on Wednesday reviewed security and law preparedness with all districts ahead of the Eid-ul-Zuha (Bakrid) festival on June 7. During the meeting held virtually at the police headquarters in presence of other senior cops, the DGP took stock of the sensitive areas, past incidents of communal and untoward incidents and gave directions to all districts to remain on guard till peaceful passage of the festival. "All districts must focus on preventive actions against anti-social elements in view of the upcoming festival," he said, directing them to assess availability and deployment of magistrates and forces for maintaining law and order. "Security measures around religious and sensitive locations, such as CCTV installation, videography, and drone surveillance must be done as per the standard operating procedures (SOP)," he said, asking for operation of joint control room and emergency planning to tackle any emergency situation. Districts have already started peace committee meetings with various stakeholders and civil society groups in run up to the festival. Gupta also directed districts, mainly the sensitive ones, to ensure timely availability of anti-riot equipment, vehicles, water cannons, and arrangements for anti-riot control drills. "Special vigil on social media and control over provocative songs by DJs/other sound systems should be enforced," he said, besides strict surveillance on the trafficking of prohibited animals.

'Sharmistha began her internship at Nehru Enclave on May 22. Prior to that, she had also completed internships in Delhi earlier this year," he said. Sharmistha Panoli had travelled to Kolkata from Pune, where she studies law, on May 15—the same day the FIR was registered, he said. Sharmistha Panoli's Father Says They Remained In Touch With Police Prithviraj Panoli said that communication with Kolkata Police's cyber cell continued through WhatsApp until May 26. 'We deactivated regular calls because of the constant threats coming from across the country and abroad," he said, adding that Sharmistha continued her internship until May 29, the day before her arrest. Mobile recovery mela: Over 601 stolen phones worth over ₹12 crore returned
The police in Annamayya district recovered 601 lost or stolen mobile phones valued at about ₹1.2 crore and returned them to their rightful owners during the seventh 'Mobile Recovery Mela' held at the district police office on Wednesday. Interestingly, many of the recovered mobile phones were traced to Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and even as far as Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. Speaking to the media, Superintendent of Police V. Vidyasagar Naidu said: 'Between November 2024 and May 2025, the police received over 1,300 complaints related to missing or stolen mobile phones. A special team was formed on May 5, led by Inspector S. Mohammad Ali and Technical Analysis Reserve Inspector T. John Joseph. We used the services of the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal and WhatsApp network to trace and recover the lost or stolen devices. So far, across seven phases, the team has successfully traced and recovered 1,627 mobile phones worth about ₹3.16 crore. Mr. Naidu said that people who have lost their mobiles can report the loss by simply sending a 'Hi' message to the police's WhatsApp number, 8688830012, or can register their complaint on the CEIR website. There is no need to file FIR. The SP appealed to people to immediately block the numbers of the lost mobiles and asked them to avoid purchasing second-hand phones without valid receipts.
