Jorge Grant and Barrie McKay to leave Hearts in the summer

STV News13-05-2025

Jorge Grant and Barrie McKay will leave Hearts at the end of this season upon expiry of their contracts.
Midfielder Grant, 30, joined from Peterborough in 2022 and has played more than 100 games across his three seasons at Tynecastle.
Playmaker McKay, also 30, arrived in September 2021 following his departure from Swansea and has also accumulated more than 100 appearances, although he has not played since last November after being frozen out by recently sacked manager Neil Critchley.
'The club thanks Jorge and Barrie for all of their efforts at Hearts, and at full time after Wednesday night's Premiership match with St Johnstone, the first-team will form a guard of honour to show their appreciation to their departing teammates, before the entire squad completes a lap of the pitch to show their appreciation to the supporters in the stands,' read a statement from Hearts confirming their departures.
Craig Gordon and Lawrence Shankland are the two other first-team players due to run out of contract this summer, but Hearts have been in talks with both Scotland internationals about the possibility of extending their deals.

Former Rangers 'keeper on moment that "killed" his career - and who he thinks should be No.1 at Ibrox

The clip has been viewed over 250,000 times since the official Motherwell FC account posted footage of the second leg of their play-off tie five years ago. Every year, on what's become known as 'Cammy Bell day', it gets re-shared. Last month, on 31 May, there was particular interest. It was the 10th anniversary of the day in question, when Bell punched a deflected shot from Marvin Johnson into his own net, with Rangers going on to lose their Premiership play-off final against Motherwell in embarrassingly comprehensive fashion. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad As ever, there's some context behind the story that tends to be forgotten. Bell was about to get married but he can't pretend that is why he momentarily lost the flight of the ball on that grisly Sunday afternoon. A more credible explanation is the knee injury diagnosis that he was being forced to manage at the time. Rangers 'keeper Cammy Bell can't believe he has failed to stop a deflected, looping shot from Motherwell's Marvin Johnson in the second leg of their Premiership play-off final in 2015 "It was difficult in my situation because the Motherwell game I actually played with an injury,' recalls Bell, who is now a pundit as well as running a glamping business in Dumfries and Galloway. 'I needed an operation, so it was a double dunter for me in terms of the next season. I'd made a mistake and needed an op. 'These are the things that people aren't aware of. I played the Motherwell game while needing injections to get through that game. I had a microfracture in my knee. It was about August before I actually got the operation and then faced a six-month long rehab.' By this time, of course, he'd firmly lost his place. Wes Foderingham had been signed from Swindon Town. The next time he played at first team game it was the beginning of the following season – for Dundee United. Recovery from the operation had obviously been an issue but he also knew it was a long way back when it came to regaining the trust of Rangers fans. He never made it back. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Really, when I reflect now, did it kill my Rangers career? It absolutely did,' he says. 'And it was just the fact that I didn't have the opportunity to go straight back in and play a game. Wes came in and was a fantastic goalie for Rangers.' Despite some high-profile mistakes, Jack Butland had been backed to claim the Rangers No.1 shirt back (Photo by Alan Harvey / SNS Group) Why all this is relevant again now is that the Ibrox side are again at a crossroads when it comes to 'keepers. Although then Rangers manager Mark Warburton's hand was forced due to Bell's injury, he knew he needed a quality challenger for the No 1 position, hence Foderingham's recruitment. Current manager Russell Martin, meanwhile, has inherited an intriguing dilemma. Who is the No.1 at Rangers? Jack Butland or Liam Kelly? Or is it a case of recruiting someone else entirely? Butland is of course the higher earner and the one who might be expected to be the first choice. However, faith in him has been shaken by a series of high-profile mistakes. This eventually led to interim manager Barry Ferguson replacing him with Kelly, who finished the season in possession of the goalkeeper's jersey. Ferguson is no longer in such a position of power so Kelly will know that both 'keepers start with a clean sheet under Martin. But impressing the new manager – or head coach – is one thing. The fans are another. Have they already made up their minds with regards to Butland? He was dropped after Dylan Levitt's effort from the edge of the box squirmed underneath him in the 2-0 defeat to Hibs at the start of April. A week earlier he had spilt a header from Joe Shaugnessy, with the Dundee skipper duly sweeping in the rebound. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Bell can empathise although at least Butland is currently fit and has a chance to rectify the situation, something he was denied. 'Jack Butland's in a different scenario,' he says. 'Yes, he's made a few mistakes, of course he has and he knows that himself. But he's got the opportunity to work hard pre-season, become Russell Martin's No.1 and prove to Rangers fans that he's good enough.' 'It's massively difficult,' he adds. 'You're always reminded of those moments. Jack Butland will have that too. As a person, he needs to get over it and I'm pretty sure he has. He recognises he had a difficult season last season and that's probably the most important thing – that he knows that that's happened. 'It's about how he rectifies that, how he gets back to the training ground and works hard. The only way he can turn it around is by getting back in the team and playing games because that's how you restore faith in a person. It's by getting back in the team, being consistent again. 'Because we know he can do it. He's just had a bad period and I always think as a goalkeeper when you go through that rut, it generally comes in two threes and fours. We've seen it with Allan McGregor in his last season. He had a lot of mistakes and there were question marks over him. But again, he's got big broad shoulders and he got on with it and he made some incredible European displays that season.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'I think Jack Butland will be working really hard this summer because he'll want to be Rangers No.1. He'll want to start the season well. He's got a new opportunity with a new manager as well. It's a big summer for him.' For what it's worth, Bell believes Butland should be reinstated as No 1, although he will have to prove he is worth it in pre-season. 'At this moment in time, yeah,' he says. 'Unless there's a different option that comes in and somebody that's more suited to Russell Martin's style. But as a goalkeeper, making big saves, I think Jack Butland's got all the tools to do it.'

Kwame Poku tipped for Rangers stardom as Peterborough chief reveals destiny and truth behind Celtic rumours

Peterborough legend and current director of football Barry Fry is tipping his star man to go right to the top Kwame Poku's numbers speak for themselves after a season where he tore League One apart down south. In fact the only figures that won't stack up relating to the departing Peterborough winger will be the ones relating to a compensation fee, according to Posh director of football Barry Fry. ‌ The 80-year-old London Road legend insists Poku is destined for the Premier League one day such is his ability on the wing. ‌ Fry just fears losing the 23-year-old for next to nothing should he chose to leave England in the course of the next few weeks with Rangers keen - along with clubs from Portugal, Belgium and Germany. Anything other than a move to another English club would see Peterborough resigned to accepting a compensation fee under the lower rate FIFA guidelines. But Fry knows he's worth so much more than that. In 27 league games for Darren Ferguson's side last season Poku produced 12 goals and eight assists. He was a key man as they beat Birmingham City at Wembley to lift the Vertu Football League Trophy for the second time in as many years - with the Blues now among the clubs keen on taking the player and taking him with them into the Championship. In the four seasons since his move to the Weston Homes Stadium the former Colchester United winger has scored 30 times in 147 appearances. But the last campaign was the standout, despite missing over three months from December to March after surgery on his hamstring. Fry reckons he's one of the best he's seen at Posh. And he's been there long enough. ‌ Speaking to Mail Sport, he said: 'Kwame's top drawer. The Rangers fans would absolutely love him if he went up to Scotland. 'He's a very, very skilful player. A very exciting player. He gets the ball and you get on the end of your seat. You expect things to happen when he is in possession. ‌ 'I think wherever he goes, he'll be a fan's favourite because he's such an exciting player. But he scores goals too and creates them. He's a lovely lad and I've really enjoyed him being at the club. 'In truth I could have sold him on January 1. There was a dozen top clubs in the Championship, wanted him then to push forward, but he was injured. He never played until the end of March. 'He still got in the League One Team of the Year - and he missed almost half the games through injury. So it just shows you what an outstanding player he is at our level.' ‌ Destined for the English Premier League one day? Fry said: 'One million percent. He's only 23 so I've no doubt he'll get there. 'He's a lovely boy, and he's got tremendous potential to go to the top. But wherever he goes next, he's got to play.' ‌ Birmingham appeared to be leading the chase for Poku as Chris Davies looked to tool up for the Blues' return to the second tier next season. But the League One champions are reported to have grown frustrated with the length of time the player is taking considering his options and are now assessing other targets. That, and the prospect of European football, could yet play into Rangers' hands for Poku, whose one cap for Ghana came in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. Just like Vaclav Cerny, the Croyden-born winger plays on the right but is stronger with his left foot and a real threat cutting in off the wing. Cerny, who spent last season on loan at Ibrox from Wolfsburg, has a £9m price tag on his head and a list of suitors across the continent. That's led new Ibrox boss Russell Martin - himself a former Peterborough player - to look elsewhere. ‌ Poku, should he choose Ibrox, would likely cost closer to the £300,000 Rangers paid Charlton for Joe Aribo six years ago under the same FIFA tribunal system. Should he choose to stay in England then, if no fee was agreed, the Professional Football Compensation Committee would decide on a price. And that panel are known to take a far broader range of factors into account when setting the fee, such as the player's stats, interest from other clubs, the contracts on offer, previous fee, age and time with the academy. ‌ That's why Posh are desperate for Poku to choose another English club as his next destination. But Fry admitted: 'Well, I would, but then again, it's not up to me. It's up to his agent and what Kwame wants to do. 'I know Russell Martin very well, because we bought him from Wycombe, and we sold him to Norwich, before he helped Norwich get up to the Premier League. 'I haven't seen much of Rangers, but I know Russell likes football players. And Kwame is a very good football player. 'I've not heard from Russell. But he's got no need to ring me, in all honesty. I'd heard before that Celtic were in for him too. 'But I know Brendan very well, and I know Gavin Strachan, who used to be Darren's assistant down here. None of them phoned me about him.'

Former England captain Owen Farrell seals Saracens return

The former England captain called time on his 16-year stay with the Gallagher Premiership side at the end of last season. But fly-half Farrell has agreed to leave Racing 92 and return to Saracens after a disappointing, injury-disrupted campaign with the Top 14 outfit. Welcome home, @owen_faz 👑#YourSaracens💫 — Saracens Rugby Club (@Saracens) June 16, 2025 He told the club's official website: 'Saracens is my home and the opportunity to come back is one that excites me enormously. 'Having watched from afar this season, it is clear to see that the club has incredible potential, and I can't wait to get back in the mix for the 25/26 season.' The 33-year-old ex-club captain has signed a two-year deal at the StoneX Stadium to rejoin a club with whom he won three European Cups and six Premiership crowns. Farrell made his Saracens debut in 2008, 11 days after his 17th birthday, and amassed 256 appearances before heading for France. He has won 112 England caps and made six Test appearances for the British and Irish Lions, although he has not been included in the squad – coached by his father Andy – for this summer's tour of Australia. Farrell has not played Test rugby since the 2023 World Cup, initially taking a break to prioritise his mental wellbeing, before his move abroad made him ineligible for selection. Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall is hoping the vastly-experienced stand-off will play a role in what he believes will be an exciting future for the club. McCall said: 'Owen has Saracens in his DNA. His competitive spirit is woven into the fabric of this club and we are delighted he has chosen to come home. 'He returns to a young group full of potential, players eager to learn, play and push for success. We know he will love being part of where this group, and this club, are headed.'
