Kwame Poku tipped for Rangers stardom as Peterborough chief reveals destiny and truth behind Celtic rumours
Peterborough legend and current director of football Barry Fry is tipping his star man to go right to the top
Kwame Poku's numbers speak for themselves after a season where he tore League One apart down south.
In fact the only figures that won't stack up relating to the departing Peterborough winger will be the ones relating to a compensation fee, according to Posh director of football Barry Fry.
The 80-year-old London Road legend insists Poku is destined for the Premier League one day such is his ability on the wing.
Fry just fears losing the 23-year-old for next to nothing should he chose to leave England in the course of the next few weeks with Rangers keen - along with clubs from Portugal, Belgium and Germany.
Anything other than a move to another English club would see Peterborough resigned to accepting a compensation fee under the lower rate FIFA guidelines.
But Fry knows he's worth so much more than that. In 27 league games for Darren Ferguson's side last season Poku produced 12 goals and eight assists.
He was a key man as they beat Birmingham City at Wembley to lift the Vertu Football League Trophy for the second time in as many years - with the Blues now among the clubs keen on taking the player and taking him with them into the Championship.
In the four seasons since his move to the Weston Homes Stadium the former Colchester United winger has scored 30 times in 147 appearances.
But the last campaign was the standout, despite missing over three months from December to March after surgery on his hamstring. Fry reckons he's one of the best he's seen at Posh. And he's been there long enough.
Speaking to Mail Sport, he said: 'Kwame's top drawer. The Rangers fans would absolutely love him if he went up to Scotland.
'He's a very, very skilful player. A very exciting player. He gets the ball and you get on the end of your seat. You expect things to happen when he is in possession.
'I think wherever he goes, he'll be a fan's favourite because he's such an exciting player. But he scores goals too and creates them. He's a lovely lad and I've really enjoyed him being at the club.
'In truth I could have sold him on January 1. There was a dozen top clubs in the Championship, wanted him then to push forward, but he was injured. He never played until the end of March.
'He still got in the League One Team of the Year - and he missed almost half the games through injury. So it just shows you what an outstanding player he is at our level.'
Destined for the English Premier League one day? Fry said: 'One million percent. He's only 23 so I've no doubt he'll get there.
'He's a lovely boy, and he's got tremendous potential to go to the top. But wherever he goes next, he's got to play.'
Birmingham appeared to be leading the chase for Poku as Chris Davies looked to tool up for the Blues' return to the second tier next season. But the League One champions are reported to have grown frustrated with the length of time the player is taking considering his options and are now assessing other targets.
That, and the prospect of European football, could yet play into Rangers' hands for Poku, whose one cap for Ghana came in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. Just like Vaclav Cerny, the Croyden-born winger plays on the right but is stronger with his left foot and a real threat cutting in off the wing.
Cerny, who spent last season on loan at Ibrox from Wolfsburg, has a £9m price tag on his head and a list of suitors across the continent. That's led new Ibrox boss Russell Martin - himself a former Peterborough player - to look elsewhere.
Poku, should he choose Ibrox, would likely cost closer to the £300,000 Rangers paid Charlton for Joe Aribo six years ago under the same FIFA tribunal system. Should he choose to stay in England then, if no fee was agreed, the Professional Football Compensation Committee would decide on a price.
And that panel are known to take a far broader range of factors into account when setting the fee, such as the player's stats, interest from other clubs, the contracts on offer, previous fee, age and time with the academy.
That's why Posh are desperate for Poku to choose another English club as his next destination. But Fry admitted: 'Well, I would, but then again, it's not up to me. It's up to his agent and what Kwame wants to do.
'I know Russell Martin very well, because we bought him from Wycombe, and we sold him to Norwich, before he helped Norwich get up to the Premier League.
'I haven't seen much of Rangers, but I know Russell likes football players. And Kwame is a very good football player.
'I've not heard from Russell. But he's got no need to ring me, in all honesty. I'd heard before that Celtic were in for him too.
'But I know Brendan very well, and I know Gavin Strachan, who used to be Darren's assistant down here. None of them phoned me about him.'

Arsenal target second Real Madrid star after huge Rodrygo transfer offers emerge
Arsenal are keen on signing Rodrygo from Real Madrid this summer but they have alternatives in mind if a deal for the exciting Brazil international cannot be achieved Arsenal have identified Brahim Diaz as an alternative target to Rodrygo if they are unsuccessful in their bid to lure the Real Madrid forward to the Emirates this summer. The Gunners are seeking quality additions to their forward line and want to add a left-sided forward as well as a top No.9. Rodrygo, 24, has quickly emerged as a top target amid uncertainty over his future at the Bernabeu alongside other names, such as a long-term target in Nico Williams. While Arsenal are keen on the idea of adding Rodrygo to their ranks, the noises coming out of Spain suggest that the player is leaning towards staying put. But a new report from Fichajes claims that Brahim, 25, is seen as a 'smart' alternative to Rodrygo who would also likely be available for a more reasonable price than the former Santos man. It's said that Arsenal would be prepared to offer as much as €50million (£42.6m) to bring the versatile forward to north London. While it remains to be seen if Brahim would be open to a Premier League switch, there are other suitors lurking, too. Bayer Leverkusen, now coached by Erik ten Hag, are also interested in the Morocco international. Rival transfer interest could also impact their ability to lure Rodrygo to The Emirates, with the same outlet claiming that Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal have laid down monstrous €130m (£110.8m) offers for the Brazil star. While it remains to be seen if Rodrygo would be open to moving to Saudi Arabia, Real Madrid could struggle to turn down such sums for a player who had fallen out of favour under Carlo Ancelotti. For Rodrygo's part, he is seemingly willing to try and re-establish himself under the club's new head coach, Xabi Alonso. Marca even reported last week that Rodrygo was 'back on track' after holding early talks with Alonso, with the forward even sharing a selection of training images on his social media account alongside the caption "happy". Arsenal are also avid admirers of Williams, but financing the deal for the Athletic Bilbao star would be costly. Crucially, he, too, has admirers and is said to have transfer talks with Barcelona in recent days over a potential cross La Liga switch.

Darwin Nunez ready to accept transfer offer as Liverpool set asking price
Darwin Nunez is ready to accept a transfer offer to leave Liverpool but the Premier League champions are asking for at least £50m for the striker. Nunez has largely disappointed at Anfield following a big-money move from Benfica in 2022 worth up to £85m. The 25-year-old scored 34 goals during his last season at Benfica but has failed to hit those heights during his three-year spell at Liverpool. Nunez has chipped in with some vital goals – scoring 40 in total over the past three seasons – but Liverpool bosses expected more from one of the most expensive signings in the club's history. Liverpool fielded offers for Nunez during the January transfer window but did not want to risk unsettling a squad that was on course to win the Premier League. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. But Arne Slot is open to selling Nunez this summer, especially if the sale boosts his own transfer kitty and allows him to bring more new signings to the club. Liverpool have signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen and are set to welcome his former teammate Florian Wirtz to Anfield in a deal worth around £115m. Nunez is one of the players expected to make way and has emerged as a target for several clubs in Saudi Arabia and Europe. According to Gianluca di Marzio, Napoli have identified Nunez as a top target and the Uruguay international is 'open' to joining the Serie A champions. Napoli have already sealed an impressive deal for Manchester City hero Kevin De Bruyne and now want to add Nunez to Antonio Conte's squad in Naples. Appearances: 95Goals: 25Assists: 13Wins: 57Goals per game: 0.57 Big chances missed: 55 Corriere dello Sport also say Napoli are working on a deal for Nunez and believe Liverpool have quoted a price of at least £50m to interested suitors. Napoli's biggest competition for Nunez could in fact come from their direct rivals AC Milan, who are looking to sign a new striker for new manager Massimiliano Allegri. The Saudi Pro League could offer Nunez a lucrative contract but he is believed to have reservations about leaving elite club football in Europe. Despite his underwhelming spell on Merseyside, Nunez has all the attributes to be a top-class striker. Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain have even been urged to approach Liverpool to discuss a shock move for Nunez. 'There are two players I'd like to see at PSG and one is Kai Havertz from Arsenal,' France World Cup winner Marcel Desailly told Oddspedia. More Trending 'Havertz is the best option because he can play as a midfielder but also as a point of reference up front as a striker. 'For me Havertz would be the best signing for PSG and the other is Darwin Nunez from Liverpool. 'Nunez is a point of reference and has great movement, he has been unlucky in front of goal but I think he'd do well in a back-up role for PSG. 'Those are the two players I'd like to see join PSG this summer.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Chelsea beats LAFC 2-0 in their opening match of the Club World Cup
ATLANTA — Pedro Neto scored in the first half and Enzo Fernández in the 79th minute to give Chelsea a 2-0 win over Los Angeles FC in Group D's Club World Cup opener on Monday. Chelsea put pressure on LAFC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris early in the match. Neto scored in the 34th minute, picking up a pass from Nicolas Jackson and cutting onto his left foot for a near-post finish. There were 22,137 fans in attendance at the 71,000-capacity Mercedes-Benz Stadium, many of them backing LAFC. The Black and Gold had positive sparks of energy and possession throughout the first half, but struggled to find any real opportunities in front of goal. LAFC almost got one back just before the 60-minute mark, but Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez came up with a save to keep Denis Bouanga off the scoresheet. The Black and Gold aimed to get some more experience onto the pitch at the half, bringing on former Chelsea man Olivier Giroud. Coming in off the bench, Fernández made no mistake finishing Liam Delap's cross, adding an insurance goal for The Blues. Key moment Chelsea's day was made even more positive by the debut of Delap, a promising 22-year-old English striker signed from Ipswich Town. Takeaways While Chelsea is the favorite to top Group D, LAFC's next two matches become essential to moving on to the knock-out rounds. LAFC vs. Flamengo will prove to be an entertaining game, with the two sides most likely battling it out for the group's second spot. "It's a high level against a quality team. If you give them a moment, they'll punish you. They had two chances, and they punished us." — Marky Delgado, LAFC midfielder. "We know they've got amazing players and they're a really good team, but we've got to play our football. No matter who we're playing, we play our football really confident. … You've got to pick your moments, and I think we've done that well today." — Levi Colwill, Chelsea defender.
