TV series that's ‘better than Line of Duty' makes gutting announcement

The creator behind Apple TV Plus' hit spy thriller Slow Horses is exiting the show after five seasons, it has been confirmed.
Will Smith, the mastermind behind the beloved Gary Oldman adaptation about a 'dysfunctional team of MI5 agents', has been writing and executive producing the Slough House series since season one.
His acclaimed work has not only scored him an Emmy with more nominations in the pipeline, but Slow Horses also boasts an impressive 98% on Rotten Tomatoes.
As such, not only has the show (also starring Jack Lowden and Jonathan Pryce) proved a mammoth success for the streamer, but it has been praised by fans for its speedy production.
Three years after it first aired, fans are already looking towards the fifth season which comes out in September, with season six and seven officially on the way.
Per Variety, season six, which has already finished filming, will be helmed by Gaby Chiappe (behind ITV's crime drama The Level) while All Creatures Great and Small creator Ben Vanstone will step in for season seven which rolls cameras this autumn.
The publication added that Smith – who is also behind shows like Veep and The Thick of It – is not involved in these two seasons at all.
It's all very reminiscent of BBC's hit thriller Killing Eve, which switched up showrunner every season to varying levels of success.
Smith's next project will be adapting Andrew O'Hagan's Caledonian Road for the screen, which investigates class and wealth in modern-day Britain.
Based on Mick Herron's bestselling espionage series, season seven already has a synopsis, despite the fifth not even being out yet.
The official synopsis explained the new episodes would follow the conventional group trying to find and neutralise a mole at the heart of the British Government – in line with the plot of Herron's seventh novel Bad Actors.
In a statement, Jay Hunt, creative director of Europe for Apple TV+ also confirmed Oldman's reprisal of his role as the unkempt and grumpy Jackson Lamb (who becomes a reluctant mentor to agent River Cartwright portrayed by Jack).
He added: 'Slow Horses has won fans all over the world with its unique mix of self-deprecating British humour and high-octane action.
'I'm delighted viewers will have another season to enjoy Gary's magnificent performance as Jackson Lamb alongside the Slow Horses' slightly inept spycraft.' More Trending
The show is also onboarding a new director with Ludwig's Robert McKillop.
Each season contains six episodes and there's promise of even more seasons ahead with the author behind the novel series already working on the ninth book.
Slow Horses is available to stream on Apple TV Plus. Season five hits screens on September 24, 2025.

Off the back of the latest batch of spoilers dropping as usual on Tuesday, some teasers for future weeks revealed in some soap magazines have been shared online. ‌ Soap fans will know the mags tend to hint at what's happening beyond the current week of spoilers, with a glimpse at what will be in the next issue. With that there's vague spoilers about that week, likely to be in a couple of weeks time. ‌ It comes as spoilers for next week teased John Sugden would target his brother Robert Sugden once more in a twisted plan to turn his family against him. Now, the advanced spoilers for the next issues have teased more turmoil for Robert, as well as an "unexpected" twist. ‌ Said to be for episodes airing the week of August 18, the snippets taken from soap magazines, while it's not noted which ones, tease this plot will continue. It's not the only storyline to carry on though, as further spoilers tease a potentially huge update in the Nate Robinson murder plot. There's also "upset" for one couple, and a "stressful announcement". The spoilers are all a bit vague, intentionally, with more information to be revealed in the new spoilers next Tuesday. ‌ For now though, fans have been trying to decipher what certain teasers mean. With the Robert plot, one spoiler states he's left "struggling to cope" as his turmoil over his feud with John, rejection in the village and his six years in prison begins to take its toll. But there's set to be an "unexpected encounter" that lifts some of that turmoil it seems. Cain Dingle features a lot in this week too according to the teasers. There's said to be some news from the police about the investigation into his son Nate's death. Currently, his killer John has successfully managed to frame now-dead Owen for the crime, with a fake confession. ‌ But it's said Cain and Nate's wife Tracy Robinson are forced to relive events as the police have some questions about Nate's death. So why are the cops snooping around once more, and should John be worried? There's set to be emotional scenes as Nate's loved ones are forced to face their grief once more. Cain also shares an announcement that is set to stress one village resident out, according to another spoiler. ‌ But what does he have to say? Teen Dylan Penders also features in this week amid his trouble with villain Ray, with April Windsor now dragged into it. A spoiler hints Dylan will be left feeling "guilty" about something he has done. What could this be about? Finally, there's more trouble for Charity Dingle and Mackenzie Boyd judging by another teaser. The spoiler suggests Mack is left upset with his wife when she forgets an important date. So what has she forgotten, and could the pair be headed for a split? I want to invest it. I don't want to go on some crazy shopping spree.' Cach, a dancer from London, agreed: 'Cost of living crisis, I'll save it!' It comes despite making history, with American Toni being the ITV2 show's first ever international bombshell to win. She entered on the first night of this summer's series and coupled up with Cach a month later, during Casa Amor. Toni said: 'I feel like I'm representing a whole nation! I didn't expect to make it past week one. 'Hopefully now we will just find time to enjoy one another's company and not let everything else take over.' Cach added: 'It feels amazing to win. I was 100 per cent authentically myself and luckily the public liked it, so I'm buzzing. 'I appreciate every moment on the show, it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I wouldn't have done it any other way.' Toni will be remembered as one of the series 'Big Three' - a name coined by fans for her trio of friends, with Shakira Khan and Yasmin Pettet who came second and third respectively. Toni added: 'Friends I will have for life. That was a big takeaway. The girls were my rock for the eight weeks.' Cach and Toni WIN Love Island and bag £50k as raunchiest ever series ends She'll be spending more time with Cach than the girlies, though, as I can reveal ITV are set to offer the couple a spin-off show which follows their transatlantic relationship as they navigate love outside the villa. 6 Toni is the show's first ever international bombshell to win Credit: Shutterstock Editorial A source said: 'Even without the win, Cach and Toni's story should make great TV just due to their exciting lives. It will also be a chance to include Shakira and Yasmin when they visit Toni and catch up on the outside.' Shakira, 22, had a rocky journey in the villa but came runner-up with bad boy Harry Cookesley, 30. She said: 'The best romance of the series for me is Toni and Yas. Absolute weapons. I love those girls to bits. 'They will be bridesmaids at my wedding and godmothers of my children. I couldn't have done a day without them.' No mention of Harry, there, though… probably for the best. He told the That Gaby Roslin podcast: 'When Elizabeth and I met, she was magnificent, she is the person a young gay man would want to marry before realising he would have to do geography he wasn't interested in. 'She was wearing this gold magnificence which she is wearing in the [show] promo in the coffin. "I started talking and she said, 'Are you talking to my breasts?' I said, 'Yes, actually I am'. 'Well, it would be absurd not to, since they are there. I mean, 'Are you looking at the Alps?!'' Prime Video thriller The Terminal List: Dark Wolf drops on August 27. Richie said: 'It's a real honour to be joining such an iconic TV programme and a brilliant family of presenters. 'Escape to the Country is one of the reasons I moved out of London for a quieter more rural way of life.' Love Island voting percentages REVEALED after Toni Laites and Cach Mercer scoop £50,000 cash prize - and it's the closest final in show's history

Toni Laites and Cacherel 'Cach' Mercer won the twelfth series of Love Island on Monday evening, making show history in the process. ITV has now shared the voting breakdown for the four couples that made it to the final, with the figures confirming it was the narrowest win since the show launched in 2015. In total, Toni and Cach received 33.5% of the vote, with Shakira Khan and Harry Cooksley taking 26.2% - showing the result was a close call. Yasmin Pettet and Jamie Rhodes came third with 22% and Angel Swift and Ty Isherwood placed fourth with 18.3%. With just 15% between fourth and first place, it's the closest final vote in history. The results of the votes come after host Maya Jama, 30, announced that the couple had received the highest percentage of the public vote and would take home the £50,000 cash prize. And ITV has now shared the voting breakdown for the four couples that made it to the final (pictured L-R Angel, Ty, Shakira, Harry, Toni, Cach, Yasmin, and Jamie) Toni has made history as the first American contestant to enter the UK Love Island villa, and she and Cach seem set on making their relationship work despite the transatlantic distance. The couple had a rocky beginning after meeting during Casa Amor, as it wasn't long until the pair found themselves in a major love triangle with Harrison. Yet once Harrison decided to leave the villa with Lauren, Toni set her sights on Cach, and the pair went from strength to strength. Toni and Cach won despite the bookies' odds revealing it was Harry and Shakira in the running to win, just hours ahead of the live final. And fans seemed delighted with the decision as they took to Twitter to wish the couple congratulations. They penned: 'Justice served well done Toni & Cach .. what a gentleman man he is'; 'Congratulations Toni and cach. First American and she won. Iconic moves'; 'a bombshell + a casa boy winning love island - iconic!'; 'Love island didn't disappoint with Cach & Toni winning'; Toni has made history as the first American contestant to enter the UK Love Island villa, and she and Cach seem set on making their relationship work despite the transatlantic distance 'Toni was her true authentic self'; 'Amazing winners - hats off to the producers for an elite season of #loveisland'. Others teased how funny it was that Harrison was there to watch Toni win the 50k after previously leaving her for Lauren. They penned: 'Harrison had to watch Toni win 50k' 'Forget there were there, the win makes it even better'. Shakira and Harry have had a rollercoaster journey in the villa, with Harry's roaming eye causing plenty of upset. While the pair were originally coupled up, it wasn't long before his head was turned and he snuck off to the Hideaway with Helena. After changing his mind once again, he returned to Helena after the pair claimed to have an 'undeniable connection'. However, after Harry discovered Shakira's feelings for her hadn't gone away, Harry recoupled with the 22-year-old, claiming his relationship with Helena was more of a friendship. Angel was the final bombshell in this year's series, only entering the villa two weeks ago, where she immediately hit it off with Casa Amor boy Ty. The pair went from strength to strength despite Blu's attempt to turn her head earlier this week.
