
Puma rolls out Workday to boost global HR & talent growth
PUMA has deployed Workday's Human Capital Management (HCM) solution to overhaul its global HR operations and support talent development efforts in key Asia Pacific and Japan markets.
The adoption of Workday comes as part of PUMA's continued response to international growth, with more than 20,000 employees worldwide and a particularly strong presence in regions such as Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea. The company's move is intended to help standardise HR processes, maintaining the company's culture through streamlined digital solutions.
The suite of solutions implemented by PUMA includes Workday Learning, Workday Recruiting, Workday Compensation, and Workday Absence Management.
This comprehensive adoption aims to provide consistency across PUMA's expanding footprint, contributing to employee engagement while reinforcing operational efficiency.

The adoption of Workday has also brought changes to daily HR operations. A significant portion of business processes, estimated at 95%, are now initiated by employee service. This increase in self-service functionality allows PUMA's People & Organization team to devote greater attention to strategic initiatives, made possible by the process standardisation and automation introduced by the Workday platform.
The shift in HR operations has enabled PUMA to increase its emphasis on talent development.
Through the use of Workday, the company can assess workforce skills and focus on retention efforts. This has resulted in a notable increase in promotions from within: 80% of PUMA's leadership roles are now filled internally. The company attributes this figure to its commitment to staff development and the ability of Workday's centralised data system to support talent mobility, recruitment, performance management, and feedback processes.

Snowflake launches AI agents to ease enterprise data access
Snowflake has introduced new agentic AI features and expanded its enterprise-grade AI capabilities, aiming to enhance data analysis and machine learning (ML) workflows for businesses in Canada and worldwide. Snowflake Intelligence, set to enter public preview soon, provides business users and data professionals with a unified conversational interface driven by intelligent data agents. This development enables users to pose natural language questions and quickly access actionable insights from both structured and unstructured data. The company has also announced Data Science Agent, currently in private preview, which acts as an agentic companion designed to assist data scientists by automating routine ML model development tasks. These additions are intended to streamline AI and ML workflows, widen access to data within enterprises, and remove the technical barriers that traditionally slow business decision-making through natural language interactions within Snowflake. "AI agents are a major leap from traditional automation or chatbots, but in order to deploy them at scale, businesses need an AI-ready information ecosystem. This means enterprises must be able to unite data silos, maintain enterprise-grade security and compliance, and have easy ways to adopt and build agents. Snowflake Intelligence breaks down these barriers by democratizing the ability to extract meaningful intelligence from an organization's entire enterprise data estate — structured and unstructured data alike. Snowflake Intelligence operates within the user's existing Snowflake environment, inheriting all established security controls, data masking, and governance policies. It consolidates data from multiple sources, including Snowflake, Box, Google Drive, Workday, and Zendesk, via Snowflake Openflow, allowing users to retrieve insights from spreadsheets, documents, images, and databases simultaneously. Data agents can create visualisations and help users act on insights through natural language prompts. The platform also provides access to external knowledge via Cortex Knowledge Extensions available on Snowflake Marketplace, with content provided by sources such as CB Insights, Packt, Stack Overflow, The Associated Press, and USA TODAY, to add further depth and context to responses. The system is powered by large language models from Anthropic and OpenAI and is built on Cortex Agents, currently in public preview. All are presented through a no-code interface that seeks to ensure transparency and explainability in the use of AI. "By integrating Claude's reasoning capabilities directly into Snowflake's platform, we're further eliminating the traditional barriers between data and insights. Business users can now have natural conversations with their enterprise data, while data scientists can automate complex ML workflows — all through simple natural language interactions. It leverages advanced reasoning, contextual understanding, and action execution to generate validated ML pipelines that can be run from a Snowflake Notebook. Users can iterate with suggested improvements or follow-ups, helping to reduce time spent on experimentation or debugging. Currently, more than 5,200 customers, including companies such as BlackRock, Luminate, and Penske Logistics, are using Snowflake Cortex AI as part of their business operations. Snowflake is introducing several new AI features, such as enhanced document processing, batch semantic search, and the new Cortex AISQL, now available in public preview, aiming to facilitate analysis of multi-modal data at scale and assist teams that may lack extensive AI engineering skills.

Workday unveils AI agents to boost HR & finance productivity
Workday has introduced a new set of Illuminate Agents aimed at enhancing HR and finance operations through artificial intelligence. The newly announced AI agents are designed to accelerate hiring, improve the experiences of frontline workers, streamline complicated financial tasks, and enable employees to access information more quickly. Built on the company's responsible AI framework, the agents are intended to increase employee productivity in a changing workplace landscape. Gerrit Kazmaier, President, Product and Technology at Workday, said, "The key to unlocking real business value with AI is to actively reshape the very core of how businesses operate. All of these can be managed from the Workday Agent System of Record, a centralised management hub intended to maximise agent effectiveness for IT and business leaders and support employees in driving measurable results. Illuminate, described as the latest evolution of Workday's AI capabilities, is built on a substantial HR and financial dataset generated by over 1 trillion transactions annually. The system is designed to understand business context involving skills, performance, objectives, costs, ROI measurements, organisational models, and individual user identities, and applies this context to support business operations through agentic AI. Availability varies across the new agents. The Contract Intelligence Agent and Contract Negotiation Agent are now generally available. The Self-Service Agent is expected to be generally available by the end of 2025. Early adopter access to the Contingent Sourcing Agent, Document Driven Accounting Agent, Frontline Agent, and Supplier Contracts Agent is planned by the end of 2025, with general availability scheduled for early 2026.

Fewer top staff sign of ‘disrespect'

PHOTOS: SUPPLIED The absence of senior staff from Dunedin's long-term plan hearings showed a lack of respect for submitters and a "thumbing of the nose" towards elected members, a councillor says. Three councillors have raised concerns about fewer members of the executive leadership team (ELT) being at last week's long-term plan hearing than in previous years. The long-term plan (LTP) will set the direction for the next nine years of council services, activities and spending and includes a proposed capital budget of $1.89 billion, with rates rises of about 10% forecast for the first three years. The four-day hearing also included submissions on government reform of the future delivery of Three Waters. Cr Kevin Gilbert said the absence of council executives was "appalling", Cr Sophie Barker said it was "challenging" and Cr Andrew Whiley said low attendance was "surprising". However, the council said elected members had been briefed on the situation ahead of time, and while staff did not have a role in the hearing some, including chief executive Sandy Graham, had attended. Crs Steve Walker, David Benson-Pope and Christine Garey all felt the level of attendance from executive leadership was appropriate. Cr Gilbert said the lack of senior staff during all but the closing hours of the final day was "nothing short of an affront to the Dunedin public and a thumbing of the nose to councillors and the process". "As I understand it, while members of the ELT may have wanted to attend, this was a decision made by the CEO and one I cannot fathom without a hefty degree of cynicism." Knowledgeable staff were at the hearings, but he saw great value in the executive hearing from the public, gauging councillors' responses and noting "to-dos". Ms Graham and the ELT showed disrespect to submitters. "This to me was the lowest part of the proceeding," Cr Gilbert said. Andrew Whiley. Cr Whiley was "extremely surprised" at ELT's minimal presence and understood leaders were on retreat for two days, a claim the council has denied. He said in 12 years as a councillor, he had never seen senior staff "missing for the week", especially during hearings on a "contentious" long-term plan. "It would have been beneficial, I think, for some of them to be engaged." Cr Barker said she would have preferred senior staff be at the hearings and it had been challenging without them. "There's a huge amount of information being shared by LTP presenters and I think it's important that senior staff hear that information and public feedback verbatim." Council corporate services general manager Robert West said suggestions the council had lacked respect were wrong. "This stage of the process is a chance for councillors to hear from submitters, before making decisions that staff then implement," he said. Councillors were told in advance about the approach and no concerns had been raised, he said. Last week, ELT members had attended a routine, two-day planning session — "not a retreat", Mr West said. Staff did not have a role beyond offering governance support to the hearing, but some senior staff — including the chief executive — did attend, either in-person or online while continuing other work. Cr Garey said councillors were well supported and live-streaming hearings had changed attendance requirements. "At a time where the volume of work is huge, the approach taken was entirely appropriate. "To suggest anything untoward is simply mischief-making." Cr Walker said senior staff could be contacted by phone and it was "ridiculous" for them to sit in on a week of hearings when other work needed to be done. Cr Benson-Pope said the staff presence was "fine" and when a question could not be answered on the spot, arrangements were made to provide it. — Additional reporting Grant Miller
