Nara Lokesh draws flak from farmers' unions of his own State for trying to take advantage of Karnataka's ‘pro-farmer stand'
Mr. Lokesh, son of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, had put out an open invitation to the aerospace industry on social media on Tuesday in a bid to take advantage of the Karnataka government shelving the process of acquisition of 1,777 acres of farmland in Devanahalli taluk, near Bengaluru international airport, for the proposed defence and aerospace park, following stiff resistance from farmers.
Farmers' organisations in Andhra Pradesh termed his promise of providing 8,000 acres of land just outside Bengaluru as 'inappropriate' and the struggle by Karnataka's Devanahalli farmers demanding shelving of land acquisition as 'historical'.
'Highly inappropriate'
In a statement, Vadde Sobhanadreeswara Rao, convener of the Andhra Pradesh Farmers' Associations' Coordination Committee and Samyukta Kisan Morcha's Andhra Pradesh unit, said, 'Farmer organisations of Andhra Pradesh strongly object to this highly inappropriate statement. Without the consent of the farmers in the Lepakshi Knowledge Park area and without paying the legally mandated compensation under the 2013 Land Acquisition Act, the government has no authority to give away farmers' land.'
Mr. Rao, who had earlier served as Agriculture Minister in the Chandrababu government, defended the demand by Devanahalli farmers to shelve the land acquisition. 'The proposed land acquisition has been strongly opposed by local farmers in a historic struggle. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, respecting the farmers' demands, announced the withdrawal of the proposal.'
Tejasvi Surya draws flak
Meanwhile, Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya has drawn the ire of farmers' leaders from Karnataka for endorsing Mr. Lokesh's statement by posting on social media that 'this is how business is attracted, industry is welcomed and jobs are created. Hope Karnataka Government learns from Nara Lokesh Garu and correct its course.' Mr. Surya deleted his post later.
Objecting to this, Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha president Badagalapura Nagendra made it clear that farmers were not opposed to industrialisation, but were against acquisition of fertile farmland for industrial projects.
Questioning the logic of Mr. Surya, he said: 'The farm sector continues to be the biggest employment generator in the country as it engages nearly 60% of the country's population. There is a dire need to protect the farm sector too.'
Mr. Nagendra referred to the impact of losing green spaces around Bengaluru and said that there is increasingly not even adequate water to take care of the city's growing needs.
Idea of development
KRRS (Collective leadership) president Chukki Nanjundaswamy too took exception to Mr. Surya's statement and maintained that agriculture and development are not contradictory. 'Development does not mean only industrial development. Development of the farming sector is also development,' she said, opposing the view that heeding the demand of farmers to drop acquisition of their fertile and productive farmland for an industrial project, would not make a business sense.

Rewriting the rules of school in Andhra Pradesh
The Telugu Desam Party-led NDA government in Andhra Pradesh is revisiting the education sector reforms introduced by its predecessor and is making changes wherever deemed necessary. Minister for Human Resources Development Nara Lokesh has stated that policies yielding positive outcomes will be retained, while those that failed to deliver tangible results will be rolled back. The task being both critical and challenging, the Minister is taking an objective and balanced view of the educational landscape, recognising that the well-being and future of students must remain at the heart of the new initiatives. Officials in the education department are assessing what has worked, what needs improvement, and how best to move forward without causing inconvenience to stakeholders. The task at hand is to cater to the needs of 58,535 schools, 68,15,925 students, and 3,13,112 teachers across the State. Of these, 44,285 are government schools with 33,37,762 students and 1,84,898 teachers; 789 are aided schools with 87,612 students and 3,259 teachers; 13,461 private schools with 33,90,551 students and 1,24,955 teachers. According to Mr. Lokesh, the TDP government inherited an education system in a state of paralysis, lacking essential frameworks and operational efficiency — a charge refuted by the YSR Congress Party, which has accused him of 'systematically weakening the education sector in the State.' The data show that the State has 12,512 single-teacher schools, 5,312 government schools with single-digit enrolment, and 14,052 State-run schools with 20 or fewer students. The overall enrolment in government schools declined by 10,49,596 students between 2022 and 2024. With declining learning outcomes, the government faces the formidable challenge of reversing the trend to secure children's futures. A recent survey suggested that 84.3% of Class III students could not read a Class-II level text, 62.5 % of Class V students struggled with basic reading, 47% of Class VIII students still could not read Class II level text, 59.1 % of Class III students could not perform basic subtraction, 54.8 % of Class VIII students could not perform division and only 12.9% and of Class III students could solve basic division problems. Citing the dismal result of the survey, Mr. Lokesh has rolled back his predecessor's initiatives such as transition of the government schools to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in 2022-23 without sufficient preparation, implementation of TOEFL in State-run schools at a cost of ₹58.84 crore, and the move to adopt International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum in government schools. A sum of Rs. 4.86 crore was paid for just the interim report for the proposed IB implementation. One of the most controversial decisions of the previous YSRCP government was GO 117, which reorganised schools and reapportioned teaching staff. The order divided schools into six categories and mandated the merger and de-merger of classes. The fragmentation of schools led to the number of schools having fewer than 10 students rising from 1,215 in 2021-22 to 5,312 in 2024-25, and schools with fewer than or equal to 20 students increasing from 5,520 to 14,052 during the same period, indicating a severe decline in student enrolment. To curb the ill effects of GO 117, the NDA government introduced GO 21, which revises the restructuring model by creating nine categories of schools. However, this faced trouble, with teacher unions raising serious concerns over its 'negative impact on the public education system'. GO 21 is part of the transformative journey called Learning Excellence in Andhra Pradesh, which aims to improve access, learning outcomes, and future-ready skills. The recently concluded 'Mega' DSC (District Selection Committee) exam, conducted to recruit 16,347 teachers in government schools after a gap of seven years, enhanced the government's image. Other welcomed steps include the introduction of academic star ratings to assess both student and teacher performance, targeted efforts to boost school enrolment in rural and tribal areas, and the consolidation of multiple teacher apps into a single platform. In intermediate education, curriculum and textbook revisions for first-year students are being implemented from the current academic year, aligning with the syllabus with national competitive standards. The revisions would be introduced for second-year students from the academic year 2026-27. The reach of the changes being made is very vast, and resistance to change is natural in large systems, especially when previous reforms are still being digested. The government should remain watchful of implementation gaps that often emerge. Due diligence is key to ensuring that the quality of learning improves without sacrificing stability.

Green energy sector will play crucial role in generating jobs: Lokesh
Vijayawada: Minister for education and IT, Nara Lokesh, emphasised that the green energy sector will play a crucial role in generating future employment opportunities for youth and women in Andhra Pradesh. Speaking at the Green energy conference held at the Novotel Hotel in Vijayawada, Lokesh announced the govt's commitment to creating 20 lakh jobs over the next five years. The conference, jointly organised by the AP Skill Development Corporation and Swaneethi Initiative, focused on the theme 'Andhra Pradesh as a Solar and Wind Energy Talent Hub.' Lokesh highlighted the importance of skilling the youth in tune with global green energy demands. "By improving their skills in line with changing times, the youth will gain excellent job opportunities globally," he said, adding, "We will launch a dedicated skill portal on September 1 to connect skilled youth with the private sector." Govt. committed to transforming Andhra Pradesh into skill hub for solar and wind energy companies: Lokesh
Minister for IT and HRD Nara Lokesh on Wednesday (August 6) said the green energy sector has vast job opportunities for youth but they need to have the right skills and that the government was committed to transforming Andhra Pradesh into a skill hub for the solar and wind energy companies. He was addressing a green energy conference jointly organised by the AP State Skill Development Corporation (APSSDC) and Swaniti Initiative, a New Delhi-based social enterprise helping governments in implementing policy reforms and public service delivery, with the theme 'Empowering India's green future: AP as the talent hub for solar and wind energy' here on Wednesday. Mr. Lokesh said that by facilitating the adoption of green energy, the State government was providing gainful employment to the youth and creating livelihood opportunities for other sections, and observed that the sector also offered jobs to women in their villages. Keeping in view the potential of green energy, the government was focusing on wind, solar, pumped storage and Compressed Bio Gas (CBG) projects on a large scale. The government's endeavour was to provide jobs to 20 lakh people in five years (2024-29) in various sectors and green energy was a major one of them. The Minister said the government was developing Kurnool as a renewable energy hub and Anantapur an automobile hub. An industrial cluster was planned to be established every 100 km and efforts were under way to bring the top 20 companies in each sector to A.P. Mr. Lokesh said the government would be launching the Naipunyam skill portal on September 1. It was aimed at equipping the youth with industry-relevant skills particularly in emerging sectors like the green and renewable energies. The portal would be operated by the APSSDC with the support of C-DAC. Minister for Energy Gottipati Ravi Kumar said the government was implementing a robust Green Energy Policy with an ambitious target of generating 160 Gigawatts (GW) of Renewable Energy (RE). He asserted that the Rayalaseema was suitable for the establishment of RE projects, for which several MoUs have already been signed with investors. All the proposed RE projects in the pipeline were targeted to be completed and made operational by 2029,' he added, while pointing out that the setting up of CBG plants by Reliance Industries across the State was a major leap towards making A.P. a RE hub.
