Penguins rally to beat Rangers 3-2 without Crosby
Blake Lizotte and Rickard Rakell also scored and Bryan Rust had two assists for the Penguins, who won for the third time in four games despite playing without captain Sidney Crosby for the first time in three seasons. Alex Nedeljkovic made 25 saves.
Vincent Trocheck and Adam Fox scored for the Rangers, who snapped a two-game win streak. Igor Shesterkin finished with 23 saves.
Crosby was out due to an upper-body injury. He had played every game since the start of the 2022-23 seasons and leads the team with 58 points, including 17 goals. Evgeni Malkin also missed his fifth straight game with a lower-body injury.
Tomasino fired a shot past Shesterkin on the power play with 8:01 left in the second period, less than three minutes after Rakell had tied the score.
Pittsburgh, outshot 10-0 in the third, smothered two Rangers power plays late in the period to preserve the win.
JETS 4, ISLANDERS 3
WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — Gabriel Vilardi scored two second-period goals and Winnipeg won their eighth consecutive game by beating New York.
Nikolaj Ehlers and Alex Iafallo also scored for Winnipeg while Kyle Connor and Mark Scheifele had a pair of assists each. Connor Hellebuyck made 32 saves.
Kyle Palmieri, Marc Gatcomb and Simon Holmstrom scored for the Islanders while Ilya Sorokin stopped 23 shots.
Vilardi tied the game 2-2 with his first goal 4:23 into the second period. He scored his second goal with 2:42 left in the second to make it 4-2 for Winnipeg.
Holmstrom opened the scoring just 1:05 into the game.
BLACKHAWKS 6, PREDATORS 2
CHICAGO (AP) — Ryan Donato had two goals and two assists, and Chicago handed Nashville its sixth straight loss with a victory.
Connor Bedard, Seth Jones and Frank Nazar each had a goal and an assist as Chicago stopped a three-game slide. Pat Maroon also scored and Teuvo Teravainen had two assists.
It was the Blackhawks' first win over the Predators since a 2-1 victory at Nashville on March 16, 2023. The Predators had won six in a row in the Central Division series, including their first two meetings this season.
Colton Sissons and Tommy Novak scored for Nashville, which won five in a row before its current slide. Juuse Saros made 24 saves.
Chicago grabbed control in the second period. Donato set up Bedard's one-timer for a power-play goal at 5:47. Donato added a slick backhand at 15:24 before Jones finished a pretty passing sequence in the final seconds, giving the Blackhawks a 5-1 lead.
The big second period provided more than enough support for Petr Mrazek, who stopped 31 shots in the win.
AVALANCHE 5, OILERS 4
EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Martin Necas scored the tiebreaking goal late in the third period, and Colorado beat Edmonton.
Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and three assists, Cale Makar had two goals and an assist, and Artturi Lehkonen also scored to hel the Avalanche win for the fourth time in five games. Mackenzie Blackwood had 23 saves.
Leon Draisaitl and Corey Perry each had two goals for the Oilers, who snapped a two-game win streak. Stuart Skinner started and gave up three goals on 12 shots in the first period. Calvin Pickard came on to start the second period and had 17 saves the rest of the way.
The two teams combined for four goals in a 2:34 span midway through the first period. Lehkonen then gave the Avalanche the lead with 1:52 to go in the period.
Makar had a short-handed goal at 6:39 of the second for a 4-2 lead, but Perry got the Oilers back within one with a power-play goal 1:09 later and Draisaitl tied it with 4:01 left in the period.

Brewers place rookie phenom Jacob Misiorowski on injured list as rotation takes a hit
Rookie pitcher Jacob Misiorowski, a surprise addition to the National League All-Star team after just five big-league starts, was placed on the injured list Sunday by the Brewers. Misiorowski went on the 15-day IL with a left tibia contusion, retroactive to Thursday. The 23-year-old righty had been slated to pitch Sunday against the Nationals, but he was replaced by Triple-a call-up Logan Henderson. 'We noticed during the week — really, our pitching guys noticed during the week — that the throwing programs and the bullpen, something wasn't right,' Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy said Sunday. 'We wanted to be smart about taking care of the kid. 3 Jacob Misiorowski is pictured during his July 28 start for the Brewers. AP 'He's got a big future … and he'll try to push through it because he's young. We want to keep him from making those types of decisions unless we know he's 100 percent.' The hard-throwing Misiorowski went 4-1 with a 2.81 ERA over his first five outings and was controversially named as a replacement for the NL All-Star squad. He worked a scoreless inning in the Midsummer Classic, which finished in a 6-6 tie before a home run swing-off determined a winner. Misiorowski, who has lowered his ERA to 2.70 in two no-decisions since the All-Star break, was struck on the left shin on a liner off the bat of Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki in his last start Thursday. 3 Jacob Misiorowski reacts during his July 28 start for the Brewers. AP 3 Jacob Misiorowski at the 2025 MLB All-Star Game red carpet. Getty Images Misiorowski's shutdown comes two days after first-place Milwaukee also had placed outfielder Jackson Chourio on the injured list with a strained right hamstring. 'I mean, I'm competitive,' Misiorowski said. 'I want to play every game, so … it sucks. It's not fun to sit on the bench, but at the same time, I don't want to go out there and not have my best stuff [when I'm] trying to win for the team. So if the best is me sitting on the bench, then that's what we got to do. 'It was basically like, 'This is what it's going to be.' Obviously I was trying to fight it a little bit, trying to throw, but I understand. And you know they're looking out for me.'

Devers homers to help the Giants rout the Mets 12-4 for a series victory
NEW YORK (AP) — Rafael Devers snapped out of a slump with a homer and four RBIs in the San Francisco Giants' 12-4 victory over the New York Mets on Sunday. Rookie Carson Whisenhunt (1-0) threw 5 1/3 innings for his first win in the majors to help the Giants take two of three from the Mets following a six-game losing streak. The Mets, who began the day a half-game ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East, have lost five of six. Making his second career start, Whisenhunt allowed two runs — one earned — on three hits, including Francisco Lindor's first-inning homer. Devers' three-run homer capped a four-run third against Frankie Montas (3-2). The 403-foot blast to right was just the fifth homer for Devers since he was acquired from Boston on June 15. Devers closed out a three-run fourth with a run-scoring single. The Giants piled on in the ninth. Dominic Smith had a two-run single, and Casey Schmitt hit a three-run homer off Ryne Stanek. Backup catcher Luis Torrens got the final out. Key moment Devers' homer was his first since July 23, when he went deep twice against Atlanta. He was 3 of 29 in between round-trippers. Key stat Smith, who played for the Mets from 2017 through 2022, had five RBIs in the three-game series. He had five RBIs in his previous 25 games. Up next The Mets continue a six-game homestand Monday night, with LHP Sean Manaea (1-1, 2.08 ERA) set to start against Cleveland RHP Slade Cecconi (5-7, 3.77). Giants RHP Justin Verlander (1-8, 4.53) opens a three-game series at Pittsburgh.

Bears' offensive hiccups persist, but Caleb Williams, Colston Loveland finish strong Sunday
CHICAGO — While practicing in front of more than 23,000 fans at Soldier Field on Sunday, the Chicago Bears allowed for a decades-old punchline. The defense had the upper hand. The offense still has work to do. 'Sloppier than we were hoping we would be at this point,' head coach Ben Johnson said. 'We had a couple really good practices over the last two, and then took us a little while to get going and hear the pads clicking. I thought toward the end we picked it up and it got pretty competitive there.' Advertisement The first-team offense struggled to move the ball on the opening drives of practice. The play clock continues to be a challenge, with multiple delay-of-game penalties on the afternoon. 'It's something we're going to have to address for sure,' Johnson said. 'It showed up more today than it has in practice. This was more like a real game, and if it continues like that, we're not going to win many games.' Tight end Cole Kmet chalked it up to some 'nervous energy' maybe for some of the new players, practicing in front of fans at Soldier Field. 'I thought the (starting) offense, we really started off slow there in our first rack, but I thought we picked it up along the way,' he said. 'Had some hiccups here and there, but definitely a lot more things that we need to clean up and be better with. I think all in all, today, some of it was maybe the nervous energy going around.' Here are some news, notes and observations from the padded, nearly two-and-a-half-hour practice on a beautiful day by the lake. The first-team offense got the ball at the opponent's 25-yard line against the second-team defense. On the first snap, we saw some window dressing — pre-snap motion, a play fake, and then Caleb Williams looking to his left to Kmet. No defender was in his vicinity. The closest player was running back Kyle Monangai. Kmet caught the pass and went to the end zone for a touchdown. Ben Johnson casually cooking up a misdirection TD to Cole Kmet from Caleb Williams….2 guys are wideeeee open. Gonna be a fun season in Chicago 🐻 — Chase Daniel (@ChaseDaniel) August 3, 2025 'It was good execution by those guys and I think Caleb had a little pressure in his face, and he was able to still get it over the top and out of there,' Johnson said. 'Well done.' There's an expectation that we'll get to see clever play designs with Johnson running the show, and that's certainly been the most successfully executed one of camp. Of course, there are probably many that we haven't seen yet, either. Advertisement 'That's a cool play,' Kmet said. 'One of the many designs and plays that Ben has up his sleeve that I think will be a lot of fun to run variations of this year.' Johnson had the ball at the 1-yard line for the offense to practice a backs-against-the-wall situation. And it didn't go well for the starters. Williams, out of the shotgun, handed to D'Andre Swift. Defensive tackle Gervon Dexter stuffed Swift in the end zone for a safety. 'Our goal on offense is to get two first downs,' Johnson said. 'A safety is inexcusable.' After the play, Johnson spoke to Williams as the backups came on the field for their reps. 'Execution of the play wasn't what we wanted it to be,' Johnson said. 'It's a credit to the defense — they came out and they kicked the offense's rear in that. So that's what showed up to me — they wanted it a little bit more.' Johnson has not shied away or made excuses for the offense's struggles. He was clearly irked by that safety. When the offense has its issues, the other side of the coin is that defensive players are making an impact. Montez Sweat had a sack against the second-team offense. He was not fooled on an end-around to wide receiver Luther Burden and notched a tackle for loss. Fellow defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo notched a sack on fourth-and-goal. Linebacker Tremaine Edmunds was stout in coverage, breaking up a pass to Colston Loveland. Grady Jarrett almost tackled the football at the handoff point when he burst through the line during a move-the-ball drill early in practice. Safety Jaquan Brisker shed center Doug Kramer to make a stop on a screen pass. He also deflected a Williams pass on third-and-goal. '(Brisker) is constant energy at all times,' linebacker T.J. Edwards said. 'Practice is at 8.30 in the morning, so he's already out there at 8 a.m. Screaming and getting ready and doing all that, which you need. You need a guy like that. And obviously, in terms of physicality and what he brings, he's a great back-end force in that way.' Advertisement The offense had 51 seconds left from the opposing 49-yard line with one timeout at the end of practice. Williams opened it with a swing pass to Swift, who had no defender near him and went for 16 yards. A blitz forced a throwaway on first down, and defensive coordinator Dennis Allen dialed up a pressure again on second down. This time, Williams got it to Olamide Zaccheaus, running right to left in space, and he went for 26 yards. The operation failed the Bears on first-and-goal, having to call a timeout as the play clock ran down. Following a Nahshon Wright pass breakup, Williams then hit Loveland for a touchdown. The rookie ran a nice route to get Brisker off balance, and Williams got him the ball before Edwards could close on it. Three Bears were added to the injury list on Sunday. Running back Deion Hankins (concussion), tight end Jordan Murray (groin) and wide receiver Miles Boykin (ankle) did not practice. Offensive linemen Kiran Amegadjie, Bill Murray and Ricky Stromberg remained sidelined. Jonah Jackson seemed limited as he works his way back from a leg injury. Ryan Bates got some reps with the starters. Rookie Ozzy Trapilo got the first reps at left tackle, followed by Braxton Jones. Trapilo handled the blind side for the two-minute drill. The longest play of the day came on a strike from quarterback Tyson Bagent to undrafted rookie receiver JP Richardson over the middle. Richardson made the catch and then went the distance for the touchdown. It's one of several highlights for the former TCU wideout this summer. The Bears ran a situational drill where the offense had a first-and-goal from the 10-yard line. Bagent sold the play fake so well that when he rolled to his right, there was no defender in front of him. He connected with tight end Durham Smythe for the touchdown.
